I’m heading back to Afghanistan for another tour in the Hindu Kush. Once again working at a FOB not far from the Pakistan border. This will be my 3rd and hopefully last time deploying for a contracting job. This purpose of this video is to help you prepare and lean how to deploy down range, what to bring, what not to bring, and what to expect for an overseas contracting job in Afghanistan, Iraq, or other similar military location.

I found having a good pair of ear plugs helped a LOT when transitioning between sites. Helps so much. Edit: Watching this again, because why not. If you are a US citizen, get all that paperwork from your employer and get it filled out before you even fly out to CRC. It's great to basically have a free day when it comes to getting your oil checked.

Yeah, I plan on talking about this in my next vid. There's actually a C-130 taking off just now. This is by far the noisiest FOB I've ever been on.

@@FallofftheMap I can imagine. When I was transitioning to Ramadi via Balad in Iraq, the transitioning buildings were right next to the flight line for take offs. All night long jets taking off would wake me up because I wasn't used to it. That was when I learned how to sleep with ear plugs.

Will they take 100% service connected Combat Veterans of OEF? I served in Kandahar 6 years ago. I was there as a driver, tower guard and guardian angel to the first generation of female police officers in the history of the nation. I provided security for them during their training by my unit. We were BSO of RC-South under Col. ANGIE 1ST Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armoured Division. My Battalion Commander was Lt. Col Andrew Collins. FOB Walton. Is it against the rules for Contractors to be armed? I noticed alot of contractors with a sidearm on our FOB. No way I'm doing it unarmed. I've been there and lost friends. I nearly been killed if didnt rush him and grab him. He caught me unarmed. I'll never let that happen again.

Fall off the Map i was a usaf security police instructor to a combat communications unit. I taught: weapons, security, anti terrorism, escape and evasion. I taught them from personal experience which they greatly appreciated. Not only did they deploy to desert storm, but the south american drug war and the emergency in haiti. One ssgt told me he got lost in the costa rican jungle and remembered what i told him"dont panic,sit tight, look at the sun for its position, check your watch for the time(position of sun + time on your watch youve got your position now move). He said thats what got him out of the jungle and back to base camp.😊

Fall off the Map i was at a special ops base in southeast asia in the mid 70s when the base got hit with communist automatic weapons fire, i dont remember being affraid just that training in security, weapons discipline and air base ground defense kicked in. Better to sweat in training then to bleed in combat.😉

Because this time is difficult. I’m stuck on R&R for 2 months. Trying to return soon but with quarantines and closed airports it’s a mess. Getting all kinds of contradictory emails and weird demands from my employer.

Shyann Begay-Perez probably wise to let the recruiter be for a bit. You misunderstood. I went on R&R March 3. I’ve been stuck in Ecuador ever since. I’m trying to return sometime before the war is over. Probably lost my room and all my stuff to the Bosnian mafia by now.

Hi Fall off the Map, Great video you have produced here, I really enjoyed it, great content. I particularly enjoyed at 1:00 were you were discussing the deploying process. I I have worked in maintenance in Iraq and Afghanistan so understand what your talking about. I felt it was really informative and you really brought the point across well. I am really interested in engineering and have had a career in engineering for over 28 years from everything from starting as a mechanics assistant to now a Project Manager. I enjoy sharing my skills and knowledge as well with others like yourself. I have provide training to others and had apprentices work with me to kick start there careers. Been there done that! With the red LY (KBR) in Iraq, Dji, and Afg from 04 - 09 and with the blue LY (Fluor), in AFG 09-12. Have a lot of closed calls, and working all around Afg from Khowst to Herat, from Jbad, BAF and KAF. COB, COP, FOB you name, it been there, closed to 40 bases and remote sites. New friend here, just got signed on to your channel. Stay safe, and God bless you always!

@@FallofftheMap Yeah , probably at BAF! Speaking of DFAC, in 04 Dec, I was at H1 (Courage) when H2 Marez in Mosul was hit. Kirkuk USMI was the best DFAC Ive ever eaten. They have home cooked meal and eat on real plate and silver pork and spoon. It was a small base where the US and UK Embassy was, and formerly Chemical Ali compound. When I was based at Salerno (Rocket City), I used to go to Tillman, Shkin/Lilley, Bermel, Khowst, and Chapman. I was a QA/QC, so I really travels a lot. I also remember at KAF, Aside from Herat and Farah, I also frequent a lot of the remote SF Camp at Helmand, i.e. TK, DRW, Cobra, Anaconda and the Marines Leatherneck to name a few!

@@FallofftheMap I use to work for Dyncorp and didn't have to go through CRC. They have their own on-boarding process...I went through Florida.

I was with Dyn for 3 years. Their deployment processes depend on your job. I went through T1G at the time, then to the Ft. Worth processing center...

Don't be scared to call them and ask what the status of your application is. Also, understand that the recruiters only hold a progress meeting once a week, at least in my recruiters case. I had a phone interview with a team lead at Bagram, so you'll know if you got the job based on that. But I did make it to theater yesterday, so that's a plus. Just dont give up and dont get frustrated. Positive mental attitude

I never had any issues going through base security screening with various medications as long as they were in the original bottles. I've gone through Dubai many times usually I'll rent a room in the Dubai airport hotel, waiting in line in Terminal 2 for the Fly Dubai to Kandahar was always a pain in the rear, but getting some sleep prior always made it tolerable.

I went through all this shit... thank god great forward operator's don't have to deal with all that shit. I am sure everyone that I dealt with me was paid to pass me no matter what. I remember the hearing tests... doctor would lean over my shoulder and ask in a soft voice, can you hear me... you pass. When you're good at what you do, you automatically pass. But the sad realty is I was expendable.

Yeah, you’re in a more high risk spot than me. I got back to Afghanistan November 22. My FOB has been totally quiet but we are a hot spot for insider attacks.

I can agree with most of the stuff said, but... I guess its different if you don't have dental and doctors you see from your own city/state, I only say that because I had NO issues with either. Yes, I did need to get a scaling done on my teeth but, it was something I had considered before, and overall beneficial for when I was over there. I wasn't trying to have to fly to Dubai for a filling or something if I could avoid it. The other thing, and I have to stress this, the experience is all based off of the job you have. I did IT work when I was there in 2010-11, I got to go allllll over that place from Kabul to Mez and everywhere in between in the north. Its really what you are doing and who you are contracted to or with. That's a huge factor. The one thing though that I will say I thought was crazy was that FlyDubai is now flying to Afghanistan. I always flew in with Safi Airways, and let me tell you, those were some sketch flights. I went directly from Atlanta to Dubai, 15 hours straight, stayed overnight at the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel (6 hours) and then flew on Safi to Afghanistan International Airport (back side of Bagram) where I was picked up (literally like how 13 Hours starts) by a coworker and two others, a shooter from Nepal and a local national driver, taken to where we stayed (Green Village) to meet the rest of the group I was working with and finally able to crash on a bed that sucked but it didn't matter. Regardless of how different it is now, I just want to say that I hope you stay safe and make lots of money!

Have been following you for awhile and love your videos. I'm guessing since the Taliban retaking of Afghanistan there probably won't be any opportunities there now. Also was just wondering what your opinion is on the situation, since you've spent time there as a civilian more or less. Much love from PA.

Yeah, I think the window has closed on any work opportunities in Afghanistan. I think what is happening now in Afghanistan was inevitable. The only question is when. It can happen now, or we could spend another 20 years there and trillions more tax dollars and just end up with the same result at a later date. Some times there are no good options and the best decisions are going to be unpopular. It’s unpopular to stay. It’s unpopular to leave. In the end, I think both China and Russia will forget the lesions of the past and get heavily involved both economically and politically in Afghanistan, and within a few years it will backfire on both of them. The best possible outcome to this terrible situation is if America manages to learn from the experience, focus our resources and power where it can make a positive difference, and let our enemies get mixed up in situations that will eventually turn them against each other. I see a future where Russia is targeting Taliban drug routes and China is fighting Muslim extremists supported by the Taliban. This bunch of bad actors all deserve each other, and we are safer if we are happily uninvolved.

Man, Dubai terminal 2 reminds me of the bar scene in star wars, the last time I was through there in 2019 the freak show was really on. I really watch my 6 when I go to the bathroom there. It took me 30 hours to get to Erbil Iraq and then I had to go to the range to requal at 0700 the next morning, that really sucked. I never had any issues with medical other than it taking forever but DOD used to always process out at Camp Atterbury, Indiana that was a total BS since you had to go through medical twice. I prefer state department where you fly in like a civilian on Fly Dubai and skip the CRC.

Have you ever been to the Kabul Airport? That place makes DXB terminal 2 look like LAX. I remember stopping for a few minutes to try to figure out where to go. After several minutes of standing in one spot I noticed a huge line had formed behind me. Total chaos there. Nobody, not even the locals have any idea what is going on.

I did it back in 2009-2010. Missed 2 Thanksgivings and 1 Christmas. It was not bad but I did miss my kids. Came home home after Thanksgiving 2010 for R&R decided not to return. Managed to pay off the house and had a nice nest egg while down range. The money has definitely gone down since that time and continues to do so. My kids are older now, so I could give it a retirement run for 2 more years But only if the money is right. $175k I would do it again.

From my experiences on that pond hop, some of that free international liquor and a couple benadryl and I'm out like a light. Even if you have to buy the liquor, the sleep is worth it. You aren't kidding either when you say it takes a few days to catch up on the sleep, time differences, etc..... We use to give our guys the following day off when they got back in country from R&R at our base. Like you also said, that isn't true across all fronts, even when you're working for the same employer at different camps.

I just moved to the next step with garda world for an armed contract in Afghanistan. Haven’t told the family yet. They’re saying 30-45 days to get thru process and down range, hoping it goes well

Yeah, it’s tough. I usually travel home every 3 or 4 months, and on contracts like the one I’m on now, I tend to quit after I’ve completed my one year contract. That’s why I’m on my 3rd time deploying. In a perfect world I’d find a job that only lasted 3 or 4 months each year and spend the rest of my time with the family.

I went over in green as a customs inspector. Right on about the pills. Drones are depending on where your going and who you deal with. Takes a good two weeks to get accustomed to the base etc. Meds, take enough for the whole mob. I had a problem with that.

I managed to get my drone in. Kept it packed away until I went on R&R. Only got to use it about 3 times. I crashed it up on a cactus covered cliff where recovery wouldn’t be worth the hospital bills.

Be safe out there. I’m leaving to Greenville for CRC training for that “particular company” on January 5th, anymore advice for the medical process? And how long was the process in Greenville?

Greenville training was quick. 3 days. In the past it’s been 5 days or longer. I did get stuck there for a total of 10 days because of some holdup with my visa. Many others got held up waiting on LOAs. Other medical advice would be to try to avoid being prescribed any new medications. For example, say you fail part of the medical and your doctor wants to prescribe something to address the problem. If he notes the new prescription in your paperwork you may get held up for a few extra weeks due to some bureaucracy about new prescriptions. Also, any new crowns or root canals can hold you up for a few weeks. Sometimes it’s a real challenge to get doctors and dentists to understand the situation because they’re just focused on fixing some perceived problem not on getting you medically cleared in a way that doesn’t trigger a bureaucratic nightmare.

No drones allowed on the bases I have worked. FAA 107 commercial license doesn't matter. Leave it at home. Search LOGCAP 5 on DEjobs.org for overseas work. No headhunters, just companies. Bring extra safety glasses. Locals love them, good way to make friends.

treehorn70 not allowed to use drones, but you can have one in your possession. For me, I wanted it with me so I can use it on my R&R. I had no problems during the military search of my bags with my drone.

I’ve deployed to Afghanistan twice as a soldier. Now I’m on second month of 5 year electrician apprenticeship. Want to top out and head over seas but don’t really want to earth 5 or more years to do so. Any suggestions??

Suck it up and get through the 5 year apprenticeship. I did the same. Back then when things were really kicking off in Iraq KBR tried to recruit me while I was a 2nd year apprentice. I turned them down and continued my apprenticeship. It would have been a big mistake.

I get a lot of questions about Guarda. I’ve never done the security side of things so all my info is second hand. Their guys seem really bored, and the pay sounds like it’s just okish. Because I’m not from the security side of things I really can’t offer good advice on what companies to work for.

Only change the title to what the video is, so there’s always the opportunity to make another video for educational purposes. I like this one how it is and found it very informative but I’m not gonna be a contractor and wouldn’t watch a “how to”. Thank you for the video. I’m former Army and did two deployments to Iraq. I have a question, what kind of contract do you sign with these companies? Are you free to leave after a deployment? I suspect because there is training and security clearances involved, there will be a minimum of a couple years that I must commit myself to at least make my training worth their time?

On all of these contracts you are free to leave at any moment. The companies use end of contract bonuses as a way to keep employees long enough to make it profitable

@Cyrus Satarzadeh Also when you arrive in Houston IAP, take an Uber or Lyft. It's cheaper than a taxi. You probably already know that though. There are some restaurants in walking distance from the hotel both Houston and Greenville. Expect to pay avg $10 a meal. The company does have a cafeteria for lunch also. Per diem is $65- HOU, $55- GSP.

I was deployed in Afghanistan until last March. I left for R&R just before the world started taking the pandemic seriously and travel shut down. I never made it back to work. I was supposed to deploy to Kwajalein last September but traveling to the island would have required a quarantine in Hawaii and a quarantine in the Marshall Islands, and R&R was indefinitely canceled, so I bailed on my contract rather than risk getting stuck out there. I’m glad I did because they had a outbreak in their Quarantine facility the day after I resigned the position.

Good luck out there. Assuming you’re going to be living and working on base don’t worry about my difficult misadventures outside the wire. You won’t be in situations like that unless you’re working for a sketchy company that doesn’t keep you on base.

I kept a US bank and a foreign bank. My employer splits my checks and direct deposits to my US bank and wire transfers to my foreign bank. I keep the foreign bank because I live in Ecuador and getting half my paycheck sent to a bank there is the easiest way to get access to money for when I’m there.

Ninja Genjin food is ok. Tough to eat healthy but the steaks and ribs are better than they were on my last tour. Of course I got the shits. Everyone gets the Afghan crud. Yeah, we’re following closely the developments in Iraq and Iran. I was expecting some activity last night, but nothing happened. I suspect I’m in one of the better locations to hunker down and wait to see how it all shakes out.

Days off? Ha! There are no days off. It’s 12/7 schedule with no break until your vacation, and at the moment all vacation are canceled due to the virus. I was lucky to be on vacation when the rules changed, so now I’m on a very long vacation waiting to return. Food is ok, not particularly healthy or good but there are enough options to find something adequate. Housing is terrible. I’m in a b-hut. I share it with 7 other guys. We sort of have walls for privacy but they are just a sheet of thin plywood that doesn’t go all the way up. It’s noisy and miserable. On many bases you’ll have a better quality room but less privacy. You have to get used to sleeping with earplugs and keeping your stuff locked up.

Jimmy in Mexico it’s really different from place to place. I’m in Ecuador. Lots of rules and police enforcement. I can fly out but I can’t cross the land borders. I would definitely recommend working on getting your passport replaced. We’re living in strange times, and if you’re walking around on an expired passport then you’re easy prey for some authority figure or another to shake you down.

Well, there is no more contracting in Afghanistan, but I fit ions in places like Iraq and Somalia are similar. Housing in typically in containerized units CHUs. Sometimes in shred tents or B-huts. Bathrooms are in a separate facility. No, you can’t bring your family. Typically a 1 year contract often working 12/7s. Some contracts offer Sunday off. Most contracts offer vacations anywhere from every 4 to 6 months. It’s a hard life.

I think that was probably someone else. The last time I was in downtown Greenville was 2011 as I was getting ready for my first contract with Fluor. I’ve been through Greenville many times since, but I always hung out within walking distance of the Fluor Campus and the Haywood Mall.

Did you have any combat deployments before you applied? Is it necessary or can it be subsidized with protection classes?

No, and it’s not necessary. As a contractor you are not really in combat. Yes, sometimes there are incoming mortars, but you respond to those by laying on the ground, and then sitting in a bunker until it’s clear. All the training you need you’ll get, and it really only takes about 5 minutes.

Typically, the only additional medical “stuff” is occasionally getting booster shots when it’s time. Firefighters might have hoops to jump through that the rest of us don’t, so I can’t say for sure. Anyway, welcome to the sandbox. It looks like my next destination is a tiny base somewhere in the middle of Africa.

Question. I have an ex wife, her unemployed husband and two kids. How does pay work? I've been solicited a preliminary job offer but would like to NOT have to fork over a huge sum of money in child support and get stuck in a career by the family courts being shot at and blown up in third world countries indefinitely to avoid jail here in the states when I come back and can't meet the support payments set on the figures from the contracting job. It depends on which security position it is. Some of the “security” jobs are babysitting Afghans while they sort garbage, some are babysitting OCNs while they wait to get badges. Those are the security escourt jobs. Other security jobs have more to do with site discipline. You might be dealing with workers that break various rules or lose sensitive items. A very few security people will occasionally visit sites to asses physical security. In my opinion, the security jobs with my company are more like HR jobs or babysitting. However, it’s very likely there are aspects to the job I know nothing about.

I’ve never been at a base where I wasn’t allowed to make video calls, but there are certainly specific buildings or locations where no video is allowed. Having strong enough internet for video calls can be a challenge. I don’t know about responsibility for flights. It depends on your employer and the details of your contract.

The small base I’m on, none of the truck drivers are American. It’s all low wage guys from India, Bosnia, Kenya, etc... I do not know if it’s he same at other bases. Yeah, sure, it’s safe enough. If there are driving jobs off base I don’t know about them. All the trucks we get from the outside are Afghan drivers.

Not entirely. Most things will be familiar, but the a lot of the prior military guys were really surprised by how strict the rules are for contractors, how easy it is to get into trouble, and how difficult it is to deal with some of the workers from places like Bosnia and India. There’s an insane amount of office politics and backstabbing.

I don’t know that I have what I’d call an aggressive side. I have a serious and forceful side, but I’m an electrician not a security contractor. I’m not in the business of combat. I did, on my first job in Afghanistan, make the mistake of working for an Afghan company outside the wire. When, predictably, they put me in crazily dangerous situations, I tried to quit. They responded by telling me I could not quit and keeping me under guard. I managed to escape their compound in Kabul in the middle of the night. That’s the closest I’ve come to combat and everything I did was evasive rather than aggressive.

It depends a lot on your situation and what your other options are. It’s definitely an unpredictable time for working in the war zones, but then it’s a pretty unpredictable time working anywhere right now. Myself, I got pretty lucky, I was on R&R when this whole virus thing got out of hand, so now I get hang out at home with an indefinite vacation.

Essentials you’ll need right away: shower shoes, good boots, unlocked cell phone and a backup battery, laptop with movies saved on a hard drive, warm clothes. You can buy sheets, blankets, pillows, and basic necessities at the PX. You can order from amazon but items with batteries often can’t be shipped there, so it can be difficult to get things like a decent laptop of cell phone, though if you’re not picky and don’t mind overpaying these items can be bought on base too. I like to bring a sleep mask for times when the lights are on but I need to sleep. This time of year cold weather clothing is needed. I tend to pack heavy. 2 checked bags and a carry on, but I always end up overpacking.

If you calculate the pay by the hour it’s really depressing. It’s best to just look at the difference between how much money you are able to save at the end of each month due to having no living expenses and being tax exempt on the first 105k each year. I can make just as much working as an electrician in Seattle, but I spend it all on rent/gas/food, etc...

I’m not entirely sure what DS 20 is, but when I investigated this the most understandable info I could find was this: if your contract is primarily supporting the coalition forces then it’s tax exempt from the 20% Afghan tax. If your contract is primarily supporting other projects or providing a service to other contractors then you’re on the hook, at least in theory. If you’re LOGCAP you’re good to go. If you’re with a small company that builds housing for other contractors but doesn’t have a major contract to provide housing for the military, you should be paying the Afghan tax. That’s been my understanding anyway.

So, I don’t typically ask too many questions about how much other folks get paid, but if the pay differences for electricians like me are any indicator, then mechanics probably make about 30% to 35% more in Afghanistan than they do in Qatar and and S Korea.

Bring shower shoes and a hard drive loaded with movies. Beyond that, my experience is with construction trades in Afghanistan, so my advice on security work In Kuwait isn’t going to be particularly useful, though for all of this type of contracting work, it’s important to develop the ability to adapt and it requires a high level of patience and tolerance for stupidity. Don’t get frustrated and try to fight the system. Accept that things are not as they should be and focus only on what you can control and you’ll be fine. Lot’s of guys get frustrated because 100 times a day they’ll face things that are blatantly stupid or systems that simply don’t work or make any sense. They’ll burn themselves out trying to change things or complaining about things that hundreds of people have previously tried to change and failed. Just go with the flow and embrace the suck as long as the pay is sufficient to tolerate it.

I have read this one. I don’t think many people there think it’s a logical or necessary war. At least in my mind, working as an electrician on base doesn’t equate to supporting a terrible war. I do it because I enjoy getting to travel and being paid well while making sure that the soldiers don’t get electrocuted.

Mackinder strategy. Occupy eurasia, the land between China( manufacturing), Europe(technology), Russia(nat. resources)and the middle east(oil) and prevent those regions from coming together in a landlocked supertrade zone, that can't be patrolled or disrupted by the US Navy. Most importantly, this trade zone won't use the US dollar for international trade settlement or oil sales(petrodollar). If it does come together (chinas one belt one road initiative) the US dollar will collapse and America along with it. So our 20 year occupation of Afghanistan has been VERY SUCCESSFUL.

@@FallofftheMap you must be in allot of pain...I can't even imagine how painful that is....which that information an SI ajustment should still be life changing....I'm only trying to help ....I don't like seeing people in pain especially one of ours...and ... Thank you for what ever you do....I want you to still look into this ajustment....it's awesome it straightened me ...I was ran over by an ice cream truck when I was 11 and didn't get this ajustment till I was 14.....it fixed me

It’s difficult right now due to the combination of base closures this year and travel restrictions due to the virus. Your best bet, being in Greenville, is to talk to Fluor, but it might be a dead end this year given the situation. On the other hand, contracting fortunes can turn on a dime.

So when I apply for an overseas company you can be with more than one company right as long as it's under the same occupation it's the first company right but you can't be in different occupations at different companies?

Most companies aren’t going to allow you to work for a second company at the same time. As far as working different occupations, I’ve never heard of any rule about that. Understand that most of these jobs take all of your time. It’s not like working a couple part time jobs. When you work 12 hours a day 7 days a week there isn’t really any time to pick up a side job.

That’s weird and I suspect you misunderstood. It’s much more likely they would have a non-competition clause in their contract that said more or less the opposite. They probably prohibit you from working the same job for a different company. These sort of contract requirements typically apply to everyone but they’re intended for high level management and people that work with sensitive information that another company could find valuable. Either way, don’t worry about it. You’re not going to be able to work two jobs out there. There’s not enough hours in the day.

Then you’re definitely understanding it backwards or your recruiter is miscommunicating. They don’t want you to work the same job for a different company because you could share their industry secrets with their competitors. It’s silly and pointless with jobs like custodian, but they write these things into the contract for everyone. My advice is to just ignore it. It’s probably both unenforceable and something they would never even notice unless you held a high profile management position.

There’s many of us hoping for this. It’s a beautiful place with a lot to offer, but the world is only seeing the dangers and negatives. If Afghanistan eventually becomes a safe place again, there are many people that would love to visit and experience the culture.

Depending on what you want to do, it can be as easy as going to Constellis website and looking up their careers or using silentprofessionals.org and seeing what they have and just applying. I have an infantry background with the army. I applied for an armed security spot with Constellis on a Friday and heard from them the following Monday. Heading out soon.

The omega 3, 6, 9 supplements seem to be very effective at lowering cholesterol if you have time, they don’t do it immediately like some prescribed medications. I didn’t want to mention my employer because they’re very sensitive about that sort of thing.

I deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in the Army and im rated 90% through VA disability for PTSD, back problems, and joint issues. Will this be a problem?

Possibly. The medical screening is typically pretty thorough. PTSD likely wouldn’t prevent you from getting a fit for duty, but back and joint issues could, depending on how honest you are with the doctors and what opinion they make. There are quite a few guys out here that have some degree of disability, but there are also many that fail to get through the medical. It’s a bit subjective. Of course, those that fail on the first try often look for a second opinion. I’ve had to do this for both cholesterol and dental issues.

Right now the Afghanistan jobs are very short contracts. The employers aren’t always honest about that. Africa and Kwajalein are hiring.

I’ve heard mixed things from guys that worked for them. Keep in mind, the draw down and base closures in Afghanistan are happening very quickly. Unless the job is for some location that will remain, such as the embassy, I wouldn’t expect it to last past September if it’s based in Afghanistan. Iraq has a more mixed long term outlook, but it’s still trending downward.

What's the pay like? I'm going through the process right now they haven't disclosed anything to me yet, I'm doing it with garda let me know if it's a good company. What's the housing like or if we live in barracks etc. Would like more info I'm really interested in going. Thanks!

Matthew Aham it’s very dependent on what company you go with and your profession. As an electrician I make about 115k. Housing sucks. Some people get roommates, at some camps you’re in a wooden B-hut that is more like a sad fort a kid would build than proper housing. Some contractors get very lucky and get a private wet CHU (container housing with bathroom).

Can you still deploy as a contractor in the middle of the covid 19 pandemic ?

Good question. The answer is yes, but it’s definitely more difficult. Some of the people I’ve talked to have deployed recently. I, however, went on R&R to Ecuador and have been stuck here ever since. It just depends on how difficult it is to fly from where you are and how motivated the company is to deploy you. Right now I have two companies that want to deploy me. One wants me to return to Afghanistan, but they aren’t trying very hard and I probably won’t make it back this year. The other company is highly motivated to get me to the Marshall Islands to rebuild a military airport. Since they’re are no civilian flights they’re trying to arrange a military flight to circumvent the local Covid restrictions. With a little luck they might get me out next month.
