Depression and hair - How to detangle your hair when it's really knotty

Күн бұрын

Bit of a different video for me as we chat about how to deal with knotty and tangled hair. I get a bit personal too and show you how my hair is after 3 days of wearing the same hairstyle while in isolation. READ MORE ---
I have a lot to say on this topic so it's a longer video than normal, but my main tips are:
- Don't feel bad about your hair
- Show your hair some love
- Always be gentle
- USE MORE CONDITIONER - this is key to detangling
- Use a brush with flexible bristles
(I'm using the Glide Flexibrush which is available from salons - this is a similar style you can find online amzn.to/3ps8aS8)
I also used the SheaMoisture Coconut leave in spray - available here - bit.ly/39eDsqd
Also I talk about how depression can change your hair and other factors that affect your hair too.
I really hope this helps and if you're struggling, please call a friend and see your doctor. Here are some numbers you can call:

I have a horrible case of hair depression. I always cover it and refuse to let anyone see it or touch it.. I can’t even tell you how long it’s been since I even attempted to try and brush it out.... but today I am going to really honestly truly start to brush it out. Without giving up. Even if it take a few days... thank you for making me feel that I’m not alone. Even the people in the comments that aren’t afraid to tell their story. It’s brave and exactly what I needed to hear; so thank you to everyone in the comments for also making me feel like I’m not the only one because for a long time I thought I was the only one. Sorry for the long sappy post but I meant every word. Wish me luck and if you want to stay updated on my journey just leave a comment and I’ll keep you updated! Please no hate. Depression can honestly do this to you and much worse. All it takes is one day of feeling okay to take a stand. Anyways now I’m rambling. Here I go! I’ve got this..

I am way beyond the lovely girl in the vid... but i have also you tubing girls with black hair that easily gets matted and ppl getting dreads out that have gone matted. I am white... but i really appreciate the vid and comments... knowing i am not alone. a month of depression hair up in a bun all day and night and not dealing with the tangles that started like the girl in the video has.... at that time ... has left me scared i wont get it out either. Gonna keep trying. Will update on here if i get this damn thing out.

I am trying to force myself to finally brush my hair, but there’s so much. I’ll edit when I can, and how it went. Edit: I brushed through most of it, but still have a good chunk in the back. UPDATE‼️‼️ So.. while what she said is obviously good advice, it wasn't anything the majority of us didn't already know. It was her DELIVERY that sealed the words in. Her kindness. Patience. Love. Just her. It was her. As far as this method working for me, idk. If it goes the way it did yesterday and I can't find another way to get this damn thing out my head, it'll probable take over a week😑🥺 My hair is halfway down my back. . Right now tho, its not even hitting my shoulders. I get really bad panic attacks which bring in depression. I honestly can't even tell you when the last time I actually washed and brushed my hair was. Its all just one huge knot. 3 minutes in to this video and I'm already loving everything about it. Whatever you say to do, I'm gonna try and then come back to update 🥰 Wish me luck 🤣🙌

Start by using a rat tail comb to gently pick apart the mats, then liberally apply leave in conditioner or just regular conditioner, and brush from the bottom first to get out the knots. I'm a student hair stylist and I have a client who I'm helping, and I just slathered leave in conditioner and got to de-tangling. We've brushed for 3 hours so far and her next appointment is tomorrow so we're gonna get it all fixed for her ☺️

Thank you Christina! You are spot on with the symptoms I struggle with. I suffer from thick matted curls, super tender scalp, and long tresses that I don't want to spend the time fixing. And this is a reflection (pun intended) of the lack of love for myself. Mind blowing revelation here!! Since working from home (and even before) I often put my hair up and took it down multiple times a day stressing it further. Thank you for discussing this very important and real topic. I don’t necessarily think i have depression but I’m very unmotivated to do things such as shower, brush my teeth, make my bed etc and if i’m being honest, i haven’t brushed my hair in a week or so. Plus i have VERY curly hair so you can imagine how knotted it is right now. It’s currently 12:41 a.m, what i am planning to do is start working on myself. Tomorrow (or should i say, later today) I’ll make my bed, brush my teeth, go to school, do my homework, and spend the rest of my day working on my hair. I’m off to bed now, wish me luck guys :) I’ll keep you updated on what happens :)) Update: didn’t wash my hair. but i had a really good day. tmrw i don’t have school i’ll try washing it then. I lost my father unexpectedly almost 4 months ago. I've dealt with depression and anxiety throughout my life. Losing him has sent me spiraling into a depression deeper than I've experienced in over a decade. I haven't brushed my hair since losing him. I've worn it on top of my head in a bun for months. It gets knotted, but it has never in my life been this matted. I came across your video to search for ways to help my predicament. I appreciate your kind words and tenderness when it comes to mental health. Watching your video made me feel loved. I particularly liked how you sat down and did the video of detangling your own hair... walking the viewer through the process, step by step, using yourself as an example. Thank you for sharing this video. It brought me peace, comfort, and hope tonight that everything will be okay. 💜

thank you so much for this - i have waist length wavy hair and it's been a tangled mess for at least a week now thanks to depression creeping back in. i was getting really discouraged and felt like i should just chop it all off. but i think the message here is clear - i just need to take better care of myself and show myself love, and that includes my hair!

Thank you so much. I'm 4 months postpartum and I went over a week not brushing my hair. When I tried, I cried because I felt like such a failure at life. I am suffering from some pretty severe depression and I was so worried I would have to chop off all my hair. The very idea of attempting this task brought on panic and your video really made me feel better. I know this is months late, but there's not really such a thing as "too far gone". I used to go to cosmetology school, and we literally would untangle people's dreadlocks! If we can untangle matted hair like that, anybody's hair can be untangled with enough patience. (: If you can't find the will or energy to untangle it yourself, there are salons or cosmetology schools that can do it for you.

Thanks to your video I was able to detangle my hair without ripping it out, crying or almost shaving it off. It helped me have the patience to comb my coarse curly hair that had been put in a bun and left for 3 or so weeks because of moving and new pregnancy stressors. It was a stiff birds nest and took me 2hrs to comb through. Thank you greatly! I cannot thank you enough for this video, I have depression and anxiety, and a lot of stress going on that is out of my control, this has meant I've barely been functioning let alone living a full life, this isn't just lock down, this was pre covid, so I literally am doing what the least possible to be socially acceptable and to be able to keep my job to pay bills! Hair, personal hygiene, nutrition, home management have not got a chance of getting priority, as I'm forcing myself to get through my 40 hour job, so its bed to desk, desk to bed, only when I am forced to leave home for specific reason do I then think oh ssshhhh my hair!! Up till today I relied on my mother sorting it which would send my anxiety sky high and not to mention the humiliation of it all! I also have a hair phobia, where I am super sensitive to loose hairs, and can fixate on searching for 1 that I'm convinced is there when it probably isn't! Anyway, I watched this video and it was like having a big bear hug!! Truelly, you made me feel that I was able to get this done myself! It was not easy and mine just finished it now after starting it at 6.30am, so a good hour! It really was exhausting! The leave in shampoo on dry hair was the best! I have very fine flyaway hair and it knots easily as it's now lockdown long! Time for a short new look maybe?? Thanks again.
