Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at U2 for the first time ever on Dereck Reacts. This band really hits a chord with me, emotionally and also with instrumentation. Bono's vocals are superb! and lets not forget The Edge masterful work on guitar. See my reaction to both Sunday Bloody Sunday and BAD now!

A little known fact: the man who gave Bono the mic during Bad, and was running around on stage, his name is Greg Carroll. He became close friends with Bono after Bono was impressed with his work ethic and became his roadie. Greg Carroll died in 1986 in a motorcycle accident. Bono wrote the lyrics of “One Tree Hill” in memory of him.

Bass player Adam Clayton is U2's secret weapon, rarely given coverage or credit, despite being the one who holds the whole band together, anchoring the rhythm section, keeping each member on track, including drummer Larry Mullen, Jr who, because Of Claytons reliable sound and beat keeping, can pull off a few fancy drum stunts. And it's Clayton the band looks to for guidance when Bono goes off script in terms of' "what do we do? Do we keep playing, change beat?" So, thank you to Adam Clayton for not taking center stage looking for confirmations and glory for his contribution. In doing so, the band shines as a whole. And their famous sound is there. For not griping because he doesn't get the accolades he deserves. It takes a unique, non-egocentric artist to do that for 40 plus years.

This was the performance that launched U2 into the stratosphere. Around this time, U2 were just starting to play indoor arenas for the first time. After LIve Aid, they became a certified stadium act. 2 years later, they released "The Joshua Tree", one of the greatest rock albums ever made.

Honey lamb, they were already selling out arenas before this summer. The Unforgettable fire came out a year before and was one of the biggest lps of the year. They were on every magazine from Time to Rolling Stone before this. The Unforgettable fire tour was sold out. Hell, most of the War big venues was sold out years before, especially on both coasts. Bowie and Lou Reed opened for U2 at Amnesty. This was a great performance and I remember watching it from Live Aid in a Philly, but U2 was already huge.

Wow what a reaction video, really really enjoyed that. I’m a big U2 fan and you really have hit the jackpot finding U2 live. One of the greatest live acts ever, I don’t think there’s any band that’s pushed the boundaries like U2 have. Staging, technology, music sound equipment etc they really are pioneers of live music. Their the biggest grossing act of the past 2 decades and played to more people worldwide over the past 2 decades. U2 and the Rolling Stones as live acts are in a totally different league to any other music act. This live aid performance turned them from a big band to a phenomenon. I can’t think of a bigger band globally then u2 since this show. Always stick with live tracks. If your going to do u2 it’s has to be live. There’s so many and their tours are mind blowing See Under a blood red sky live at red rocks Rattle and hum the movie Zoo tv (PEAK U2) Popmart tour Elevation tour Super Bowl performance 2002 360 tour Innocence and experience tour I’d recommend Zoostation / the fly zoo tv Sydney Pop music/ mofo / discotheque Popmart Mexico One / until the end of the world slane castle elevation tour City of blinding lights/ where the streets have no name 360 tour Bullet the blue sky innocence and experience tour Great reaction 👍👍

Yep, live U2 is the way to go. To that list I’d add a few: “Live in Sydney, 1993”: UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD (hard driving guitar & a sonic feast) LOVE IS BLINDNESS (dark, moody & satirical) NEW YEAR’S DAY (much older song but a terrific rendition in Sydney) “Live from Red Rocks” I WILL FOLLOW (U2 young & raw; their 1st hit single as teenagers) (This show is THE iconic performance of Sunday Bloody Sunday, but u just reacted to the song here) OCTOBER / NEW YEARS DAY (do the Sydney version or this one ) “Live from Boston 2001” ALL I WANT IS YOU/WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME (stellar version; Live at Slane Castle is THE iconic version but KZfaq has been taking down vids of Slane recently, so this is your other option) KITE (again, do Live at Slane Castle if you can or this version) “Rattle and Hum tour” BULLET THE BLUE SKY (powerful, political song live; any live version will do but I like earlier, raw versions) “U2 ORDINARY LOVE on Jimmy Fallon” (older U2, but mesmerizing-lots of bands can work a stadium, few can work a living room) ...Some ultra-fans, chip in & share the best version of ONE. (rare U2 song where I like the studio version best b/c Bono’s voice).

U2 are one of my all-time favourite bands. There are so many amazing songs by them that you could react to. One thing to note, their official KZfaq page is currently remastering into HD all their music videos in chronological order, starting with their first single I Will Follow from 1980. They seem to upload a couple of remastered videos a week. They are currently up to When Love Comes To Town from Rattle & Hum (1989) and soon they should move onto the 90's, which in my opinion is U2's greatest decade, starting with their masterpiece of an album - Achtung Baby - it's "sister" album Zooropa, their Passengers album project with Brian Eno and their unfairly maligned (by some) album POP. U2 really branched out into different musical styles and sounds in the 90's. They were bold, took changes, even if it meant alienating some of their fans who loved their 80's stuff, were adventurous, they experimented with European Industrial Rock sounds and even techno. They really weren't afraid to take chances in the 90's (sadly that hasn't been the case in the 21st Century where they've played it much more safe. Still good though) I really recommend you react to their videos from Achtung Baby but wait until they add the new HD versions of their videos online. Same with Zooropa and Pop., But in the meantime there are lots of recently remastered videos of theirs from the 80's on their official page. Songs I recommend are: New Year's Day, Pride, The Unforgettable Fire, With Or Without You, Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, One Tree Hill, Desire and Angel Of Harlem. Also their ZooTV tour Live From Sydney 1993 is simply amazing and very ahead of it's time. So glad you've reacted to U2 and like them. Sorry for waffling on but, as you can see, I love this band, haha! :)

This was somewhat of an intro of U2 on a large scale for the world. It was also basically is the beginning of them taking over the world. In a few short years, they were the biggest band in the world and a hit machine. Everyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s finds it mind boggling to know there are people on this planet who still haven't heard of U2. So, you can choose anything from these guys and it will be great and yes, they are always on point live. I'm not sure if you have looked into any INXS yet, but if you want yet another example of an incredibly tight and talented band that slays live, you need to check out "What You Need" live at Wembley Stadium in 1991.

I've seen them in 2001 for Elevation Tour in Paris and it was fantastic... I've seen some of their concert in the US, Ireland (Slane Castle) or Paris and when you're inside or you watch them, you can feel a bit like in a "trance" thing. Bono's voice isn't the most perfect but it has that little something that touches you without knowing it and The Edge's guitar playing is just amazing. 20 years later I still have vivid memories of the crowd chanting "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Pride" "New Year's Day" and many more .... It was just magical and unreal ... Few singers have this power over a crowd (two others in particular: Jim Kerr from Simple Minds and Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode), they aren't necessarily beautiful or sing perfectly, but they do have what is called charisma.... In any case, welcome to the world of U2, a nice trip ahead ...

They were supposed to play three songs but didn't get the chance to. the reason is Bono saw a few ladies being crushed against the railing by the crowd and he was frantically trying to direct security to them so they could be pulled out of it. They got two but missed the third one. After more gesturing, he finally just leaped over the upper railing himself to help. If you look you can see them down there as he's gesturing to security and see their panic and pain from being crushed. Not sure where the person who wrote those notes got that he just wanted to dance with her from as Bono said himself that he saw those women being crushed down there. He was holding her to calm her down, then danced with her for a moment. Pretty sure that made her day lol. The band, however, didn't see what was happening and they were angry afterward. They got into a fight about it and thought it was a disaster, but it turned out to be the exact opposite. This performance shot them straight to the stars and they haven't come back down since.

Welcome to the wonderful world of U2 my friend. The ONLY band to have a number one album in FOUR different decades! You are correct sir when you said you must see them live. Exit, Until the End of the World, Please, Discotheque, God PT II, One Tree Hill, City of Blinding Lights, Kite, Silver and Gold, All I Want Is You (greatest love song ever written), Sweetest Thing, Gone, Running to Stand Still (also about heroine addiction), Mofo, Ultraviolet, and Love is Blindness should give you an idea of how diverse and truly great they are. Also, their Super Bowl halftime show four months after 9/11 is widely regarded as the best performance at the Super Bowl. They also performed at the reopening of the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina is phenomenal. They collaborated with Green Day playing The Saints Are Coming (at the Saints game none the less) is as good as it gets.

Pretty much everything from Live Aid was perfect. Even if everything wasn't optimal, there was something about the sheer size of it and the general vibes it gave off that cements it as a downright historical event. The Cars, Ultravox, Queen and U2 really gave it their all, and it's fantastic.

While the main stages were in London and Philadelphia , other stages around the world also participated. Phil Collins hopped on a plane after performing in London to also perform in Philadelphia . He made history at the time by performing on both sides of the Atlantic in a single day.

So, yeah, Bono was not "dancing" with that poor girl at all. There were people getting crushed in the crowd, Bono saw it from the stage and abandoned the song after the second chorus- that is why he threw down the microphone. The whole middle instrumental section isn't part of the song. he saw security was not freeing the girls fast enough so he jumped down to help himself. Before he got down to embrace the dark haired girl there were two blond haired girls that security had already been able to free (those were the two girls Bono kissed that were standing on the camera level in front of the stage). Bono selfless gesture that day is legendary. It overshadowed the entire Live Aid concert and is the thing that people most remember about the concert 38 years after the event.

In the band's early days, Bono was like a wild thing, climbing the rigging, the speakers, whatever, just to connect more with the audience. By this time the band knew how to keep it going, whatever he might get up to. That intimate connection with the audience has been consistent and informed stage and walkway designs, and a big part of their popularity.

At the time, pulling a girl on stage to dance was part of Bono's shtick and when he went to do this, he saw one girl getting crushed by the crowd and asked security to bring her up for it. This went on so long that U2 ran out of time to play what was going to be their big finale with their latest hit (and now legendary song) "Pride (In the Name of Love)." Of course, despite not playing their biggest hit, they still managed to make one of the biggest impacts on the Live Aid viewers among the many massive bands and artists that graced the stage that day.

Don't you know this wildly popular Irish band?? They have the best live performances, a very interesting and extraordinary guitarist in the world and a really cool frontman. Keep doing reactions to U2!!) You know, I used to watch only reactions to Mylene and ABBA on your channel, now I'll watch these too)) if they will, of course.... my recommendation: A Sort Of Homecoming (Wide Awake In America Version), probably to get better acquainted with their sound in the 80s. Thank you for posting this video even with such difficulties (I mean copyright)

If you haven’t yet worked it out, Sunday Bloody Sunday is about a dark day in Irish history during the Troubles. Bloody Sunday happened in 1972 and on that day, British soldiers shot 26 civilians. 14 of them died. Half of those that were killed were teenagers. An enquiry that took place a quarter of a century later described the shootings as ‘unjustified’ and ‘unjustifiable’. Sunday Bloody Sunday is a passionate, political song. I was 12 years old on the day of Live Aid and this performance made me a lifelong fan of U2 and also massively influenced my politics from a very young age. Oh, and Bad is my favourite U2 track of all time.

Sunday Bloody Sunday, one of my fav U2 song. I love the message, the passion, the strength, the will to change the world. Then came The Joshua Tree album. "Where the Streets have no Name" is an amazing song with a message that doesn't age. "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" is on par. The rest of the album is just as amazing. Not a bad song it. Of later songs, there are so many, but I love "One", "Beautiful Day" and "Love is blindness" (this one is not super famous, but every U2 fan knows it). "Beautiful Day" has a special place for me: I was humming it (it's an earworm) as I was getting to my work in downtown Washington DC, 2 streets from the White House, on the morning of September 11, which was truly a rare "beautiful day" in DC... I will never be able to dissociate the song from that event.
