The guy running on stage after Bono dropped the mic was Greg Carroll, one of U2's roadie/techs. He sadly died a year later in 1986 in a motorcycle accident. He had picked up Bono's motorcycle from the repair shop and then had the accident en route back. U2 honored his memory on The Joshua Tree (1987) album in the liner notes, dedicating the song "One Tree Hill" to Greg.

Bono is known for adding pieces of other artists' songs into U2 songs at concerts, after he rescued the girls and started singing he added a part of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" and "Sympathy For The Devil, then a changed-up part of Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side".

U2 are legendary. My favorite performance from Live Aid right here. This rendition is just…chills. *Beyond a vibe.* BAD is one of my fav songs of all time.

They stole the show IMO. It was early in the morning (like mid morning) on the east coast of America (I was in Florida taping as much as I could on our newly purchased VCR machine on MTV); so glad I did, but I was 100% into U2 at the time; I wouldn’t have missed it. STILL have that VHS tape!

"Bad" is actually about addiction, and wishing you could help someone who is going through it. Also, the guy who keeps getting the mic for Bono was Greg Carroll, a long time friend and roadie He was killed in a motorcycle crash in the rain while driving Bono's bike to his home.U2 wrote the song "ONE TREE HILL" about him.

Live Aid was a massive multi day concert benefiting African famine relief. It was at Wembley stadium in London and a venue in Philadelphia and satellite cast around the world. Featured the biggest hit makers of the day as well as relative unknown acts (like U2 were). The surviving members of Led Zeppelin even reunited for it. U2 were supposed to finish their set with Pride ( their first single to crack the U.S. top 40), but Bono’s actions when he saw two girls getting crushed by the crowd ate up too much time.

I was a teen when Live Aid was broadcast. One of my friend’s parents was away for that weekend and we held a Live Aid party. We started drinking at the first song, and well, I can’t tell you when I stopped! Good memories! I did hear this song, and loved it instantly! Been a U2 fan ever since! Stay safe, stay sane,stay strong!

The band also pays tribute to Lou Reed who was not asked to perform at Live Aid. Satellite of love at the beginning and take a walk on the wild side at the very end!

The first 2 phrases he sang were “samples” for lack of a better word.....2 seperate melodic phrases, two song /excerpts/snippets , the first was from lou reed’s “satellite of love”, & the second was from the rolling stones song “ruby tuesday”...the audience then, almost 40 years ago, two thirds of them, no matter what their age, wouldve been aware of these 2 songs....then, from there, u2 officially goes/launches into their own song “Bad”

He climbed offstage to have those girls pulled out because they were getting crushed against the guardrail by the 90,000 people behind them. Live Aid was a two-city charity concert organized by a couple of people named Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief work in Ethiopia, which at the time of the shows, was in the midst of a devastating famine. The shows were in the old Wembley Stadium in London (so, yes, a soccer stadium) and RFK Stadium in Philadelphia. This particular performance is generally considered one of the two best of the London show, along with the set by Queen. I vastly prefer U2's set, even though this song went on for so long, they couldn't play all three songs in their set.

The man you noticed putting the mic back on the stand was Greg Caroll, a roadie who became close friends with the band but especially Bono and his wife. He died a year later in a motorcycle accident while riding Bono's Harley. The band wrote and recorded the song "One Tree Hill" as a tribute to Greg. The song appeared on their next album, "The Joshua Tree." The song is definitely worth a listen, as you can hear the pain in Bono's voice.

Yes, so sad about Greg. He was so happy getting to work with U2. Sadly, in 1994, the tree on One Tree Hill was attacked by a Maori activist with a chainsaw, and it was attacked again in 1999. So over the following year, the tree became weak and unstable. And the decision was made to remove the tree, which happened on October 26, 2000.

The ending of this doesn't mean as much if you don't know that he just randomly, out of nowhere stitched in 3 other songs by the likes of the Rolling Stones and Lou Reed. All the while, the band flawlessly kept going through the whole "save the squashed girls" and ad libs. U2 cemented themselves into the psyche of an entire generation with this performance. Literally, the entire world was watching Live Aid. He also managed to piss off the rest band too, but 40+ years later, U2 and this performance are iconic, so it all worked out.

I think this point is missed so often... brilliant ability to mix on the fly by the whole damn band. As well as keep going while Bono left the stage... it felt as if it was meant to be that long in no way was it. Just an entire group hitting their stride.
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn Жыл бұрын
@PressStartOnce. Exactly. Most people don’t realize the rest of the band had no idea what was going on when Bono jumped down there unplanned. They couldn’t even SEE Bono at that low level-they didn’t know if he’d fallen off the stage or what. They had to hold it together & keeping riffing w/o sounding too repetitive. The *base work Adam Clayton does here off-the-cuff,* for example, is terrific and often goes unappreciated. Then all four come back together for that seamless impromptu mash-up at the end. Brilliant
