My world has just gotten brighter. On a superficial level, I feel so much relief to find another Black Man who digs this music. On a deeper level, I found Henry Cow thru a magazine featuring Frank Zappa. My first HC album was "Legend." I purchased all their work. "Western Culture" is a masterpiece. Its my favorite, still after all these years. My musical taste was altered by listening to HC. Now pop culture bores the fuck out of me.

Henry Cow is amazing: the first 2 albums are sublime (LegEnd is like an English version of MOI circa Uncle Meat/Weasles). The rest are almost as good. Art Bears is definitely worth a listen & eventually owning (the box!). Also, the Henry Cow box (10 CDs) is worth a look...

Thank you Dereck...and you nailed it. I have no tolerance for ignorance & as much as I love people, I hate what our society has become. I am me. I choose what i like, what i say, what i do. Too many people are afraid to step out and do just that ...Your commentary mirrors my thinking on a day to day basis. It's really incredible. Much love to you my friend.

There are so many Keith Jarrett lp's it seems endless what you can find inexpensively. And his work is pretty consistent. Anders does seem like s guy that really listens to and absorbs music. Some really messed up people in every community, can't stand to see anything good and beautiful.
@BillsBoxOfSound12 жыл бұрын
VC viewers - If you see "In Praise Of Learning" on CD, don't get it. It was remixed and it's not as good as the LP. I bought that in '75 and still love it. Also, my favorite Jarrett is "Belonging" and "My Song", bth with Garbarek, Christensen and Danielson.

I think Keith Jarrett "Spirit" is a record for you. Ambient, Flute, percussion, hardly no piano, if I remember right. He record it when he was sick.Dubbel CD or LP.

Most definitely. I have all three Art Bears albums.

In Praise of Learning was my intro to Henry Cow and I agree it's the peak. I haven't heard much Jarrett outside of The Koln Concert, which is sublime. That is infuriating about the garden. The ones here have had some similar vandalism. Henry is so lovable. I know what he means about hating in terms of being really passionate and having a strong contrary opinion even though I've mellowed out a bit. I agree his feelings come from a place of love and just being sick of people's bullshit.

It mars many of his recordings, I would agree.

Did you read The Rotters' Club by Jonathan Coe? It's a very long story, but it's also about prog music (well, the title speaks for itself) and Henry Cow are mentioned too! :) Talkin about Keith Jarrett, i just looooooooove his trio with DeJohnette & Peacock, especially "Changeless". If you don't have it, check that out as soon as possible! :)

You helped me out with the Henry Cow albums that I was going to buy and waited. I am glad you steered me in the right direction with 'IPOL. Community Gardens sounds beautiful. But sadly I was not surprised to hear that some person with zero intelligence and with no respect for beauty had to destroy it.~ Rob/Boston

Man, I was the complete opposite with the Henry Cow albums; loved the first one right away, 'In Praise of Learning' take me awhile to grasp. Also, I think that was my first exposure to Dagmar, which was quite stark for me at the time.

Late reply, I know, but anyway. The remixed CD you're talking about is the 1991 East Side Digital remix, when Chris Cutler wanted to attract a new audience by making things very clean and clinical. Universal hate for that. However, in (I believe) 2006, Cutler's Recommended Records, or whatever they called themselves that year, reissued the original mixes on CD without the ESD bonus tracks, and that version of the discography is da bomb: almost as good as the LPs. Also, 40th Anniversary Box Set!!

In praise of learning is a mutha! Do you have the Greasy Truckers Lp? Picked that up last year. I still haven't listened to it yet. As for Keith. I agree w/ you. He doesn't waste your time. The Sun Bear concerts is by far my favorite from him. Showed the box set a while back.

Alice sounds like an awesome person. It's so fun to hear about all you guys having a great time together. We'd love to be on your tream, thanks so much for the kind words. I appreciated that personal message so much and have thought about it a lot since then. Always feel where you're coming from, and and yeah it's obvious you know how to deal with the heavy shit. I can't believe I've only known you for a year, feels like you've been a friend forever. Lots of love, Dereck, have a great day.

I think Ruins from Unrest is the best Henry Cow song, but mostly the jazzy parts, not as much the contemporary parts. Basically, the first 14 minutes of the Unrest album is my all time seccond favorite 14 consecutive minutes of music, only triumphed by the first 14 minutes on the Intercommunal Music album by Francois Tusques (w/ Sunny Murray).
