I've been shaving my face for years, with a regular razor in the shower, I might add. I am turning 62 next week and I swear this practice has helped keep wrinkles at bay by exfoliating. Never cut myself, hair doesn't grow back coarser, and makeup goes on so smoothly!

I was noticing a lot more issues with my foundation looking weird, and the little peach fuzzies were slightly darker toward the corners of my lips, so I recently picked up the metal facial razor from Sephora and used it last week. It was nice! I could definitely tell a difference with smoothness of my makeup and skincare. The razor is nice because it has replaceable blades.

As a guy who shave everyday, your hair doesnt get thicker or grow faster, trust me i wish 😄 1. Shave at the end of your shower with a shaving foam (its basically just a thicker soap, so also cleanses your face) for the smoothest and easiest glide. If you use an oil cleanser at night, that works like a shaving foam too. 2. I wouldnt use any acids besides maybe hyauluronic and such after, as shaving is already exfoliating and removing the top layer of skin, and its extra sensitive after. 3. Shaving often doesnt harm, it actually keeps the skin looking very healthy and clean.

@@BeKindRewind08 Also must say, use the Gillette Mach 3 (probably best Gillette carthridge razor), its safer, easier and faster to shave with. Not necessary to shave at the end of shower, i do it bc it makes the beard soft and thus the blade easier to cut through it, but if doing it for your skin, whenever is fine.

I haven't taken the plunge and shaved my entire face, but I do shave the area between my brows down to the bridge of my nose, and I'm amazed at how much dead skin I'm able to shave off just in that one small area. It's really very satisfying to see! Everyone is so afraid of hair growing back darker, myself included, but the fine, blond baby hairs between my brows are still the same as they were years ago when I first started shaving, so there's nothing to worry about!

Years ago, I was enamored of microdermabrasion. During one session, my esthetician very tactfully mentioned face fuzz and that she'd noticed it on herself. Naturally, I noticed the fuzz on my own face after that. I'm 60 years old and after shaving my face for nearly 25 years, I have no wrinkles. I've only recently begun using vitamin C serum, which is lovely and brightening but haven't tried any acids. I honestly had no idea that my skin should probably look a bit creased until very recently!! I highly recommend this!!

@@nikkidasso6623 hi there. Well, I can highly recommend dermaplaning. I wish I could tell you I use sun screen but I don't. Some skin is more inclined to wrinkle than others - genetics. I've long heard that drinking lots of water is good for your skin and yes, I do that because I don't care for other beverages. I think it would require more water than the recommended amount to actually impact a person's skin. I think that exfoliation and keeping your face clean and properly moisturized are key. I'd opt for skin brightening serums like vitamin c and glycolic acid. As far as exfoliating goes, there are a variety of safe and cost effective ways to do that. Yes to dermaplaning and yes to exfoliating enzymes, which is what I was doing years ago. I used a pumpkin enzyme mask once a week. When I wear foundation, it's a brightening formula. Years ago, I used dewy finish by Clinique and now I use Lift and Luminate by N°7. I've never found a product I love for my neck but feel better about it when I apply a serum (using M3 vitamin C.) I've decided to accept it along with crows feet...which I kinda like.

Judith, I'm in my mid 50s and don't have wrinkles, as such, although I do have a smile line either side of my mouth. But no crows feet or forehead wrinkles, and people are often surprised to learn my age, or hear me talk about my grandchildren. I always thought that it was due to having greasy skin when I was younger, but you've just put me right there! However, my mum and her sisters had younger looking skin up until they were around my age. Then they started getting lots of wrinkles quite fast, but they smoked all their lives and sunbathed using tan oil. I've done neither, so I hope to age a little more gradually from now on. In reply to the woman in her 30s with wrinkles, I'm often mistaken for that age, but it's just a combination of luck and lifestyle. Love the skin you're in and make the most of what you have. Comparisons (even with our younger selves) isn't helpful or good for our wellbeing. We have to live for the here and now.

Thank you - I'll be buying the Versed tool and replacement blades. I bought a different big-manufacturer "dermaplaning" tool but you can't buy replacement blades-I thought I had no other choice. I have to do this about every 3 weeks or more frequently, even though I have blonde hair. And with aging it ain't getting any less frequent!! Whoever takes care of me in old age better do it for me!! For those of you with the stray black chin hair - go and get a certified electrolysis technician to zap them permanently. It's WELL worth it and not very expensive at all.

I dermaplaned for the first time today. I’m 50. I had normal blonde fuzz but started to really feel like I got fuzzier recently. No one noticed but me and I gave it a whirl. I used the Gillette Venus dermaplaning razor I picked up from Walgreens. It was so comfortable. I barely felt the blade on my skin. I tried to not go over the same area twice but at the end missed one or two areas and went upward to get those shorter rough patches. The downward didn’t work in that area. But I did short feathery 45 degree angle strokes otherwise. My prep was washing with cetaphil foaming cleanser which is my new fave facial wash. I then wiped with rubbing alcohol pad. Skin was clean and dry. Afterward I wiped with micellar water and also witch hazel. I applied the Gillette serum I bought which was calming and lovely. It has hylauronic acid,niaciniamide, aloe, witch hazel and cucumber water. Very gentle. I’ll put more on tonight. Tomorrow I’ll use my regular lotions. Just giving skin a break overnight to calm. So far no rash. Hoping for no issues this week. I’m actually glad I did it myself. I feel like if I went to a salon it would have been a deeper exfoliation causing more sensitivity. My skin seems to be tolerating the dry planing tonight. It’s been several hours and I’m not red at all. I will hopefully only need to do this monthly. I hope.

Okay but what's the real difference between thicker hair and hair that just appears thicker? It's not like hair that just looks thick is more desirable. I don't want to risk having thick looking hair all over my face! I don't understand why dermatologists always make this distinction when in reality neither one of those options are desirable. That right there convinced me not to try this tbh because I don't want to be forced to keep doing it forever or have hair that's more noticeable all over my face.

Just get a medium textured scrub pad it takes all dead skin off the face. Shaving has it's own problems. Same results without the problem's of shaving the face. I found that shaving the face causes itching and making facial hair a problem. Just exfoliate real good three times a week. You'll see brown spot lighten . You'll see fine line's fade away. Texture difference right away. Use your favorite soap or facial cream to use on the scrub pad. You'll be a happy camper 🙂😉

doesn't the peach fuzz grow back thicker? I knew a poor girl back in high school who started shaving bc the kids noticed her peach fuzz and made negative comments about it and so she shaved and regretted it afterwards. Her hair grew back so thick and course it was almost manly. I felt so bad for her she finally went to a professional laser removal expert and they helped get her self esteem back. You probably shouldn't do this unless you are willing to suffer the same consequences. This doc should not be promoting it either.

The hair comes back as normal. I am really hesitant for shaving as the hair might come back thicker like male hair so I am not sure of course there is skin benefit to shaving as you made it more clear and if a dermatologist is using why not. Best decision ever! Although I always do it in a wet face with conditioner (my skin is way too sensitive for doing it dry) The only problem is that is not a sustainable product, you often have to throw away the blade once is worn out, and most cheap blades are not very sharp so you have to be somewhat agressive, Im looking for sustainable options! I have been considering to buy a male shaver with a razor blade sharpener so I can have something reusable and friendly with the enviorment!

Came here to ask the same. I have these stubborn little chin hairs that pop up within 24 hours of dermablading. I used to just try and tweeze them but hoped the shave would be easier. If I have to do it every day, it will definitely cause irritation.

I shaved my face tonight for the first time. My one huge comment is running the razor on dry skin didn't seem right and didn't feel good. In the middle I stopped and applied a very thin layer of shaving cream. This helped. Afterwards I used hydroxy acid and Cereve. If there's any issue I'll send my findings. Happy New Year! Thanks.

What about people who have hormonal issues, and their facial hairs are dark to begin with? Like their upper lip hair and the hair close to the side of the face/near sideburns? My best friend in high school had that, and to her they recommended waxing(paperless) which she did get done, over shaving. Since those hairs are thicker, they didn’t recommend shaving. Waxing can thin out the hair over time

I've been curious to try this, but I've got one concern. Even though my hair is dark and Mediterranean, it grows 'weak' and even shaving my legs give me ingrown hairs. Plucking my eyebrows inevitably gives me those. That's why I bleach my whiskers, and I don't wax them. While a smoother makeup application sounds great, ingrown peachfuzz doesn't. 😕

Using one of the gentle acids she recommends and moisturizing properly should help keep ingrown hairs at bay, you just have to keep up with it! One of my favorite things to do after shaving to prevent ingrowns or bumps is using a thin layer of vaseline over my moisturizer.

I have been doing this for years and I have tried several dermaplaning devices. The ONLY thing I will continue to use is the single blade BIC razors, they work better and are cheap and I get a new blade each time. The best. As a former esthetician I will not spent $$$ on fancy devices when a BIC razor does a better job for me.

Hi Dr Sam I do "shave my face" with the eyebrow razers mentioned and have done for a few years. I have very sensitive skin with both rosacea and eczema, so I'm cautious about what I use on my skin afterwards for a few days. I wouldn't dream of doing it during an active flare though. The day before I use a 1% BHA from paula's choice calm range. I then use a 5% mandelic acid toner by wishtrend pre shave and only soothing/calming skincare post shave. I wouldn't be able to use an AHA etc post shave and have to avoid anything harsh for even up to three days afterwards, including my retinoid. I do however use azelaic acid the following day to help with any redness/irritation and keep my skin clear. My skin is very reactive though and perhaps needs more gentle care than most people will. I do get quite a bit of manual exfoliation on my skin, as well as hair removal. Best wishes.

@lorainemcgillivray77
@lorainemcgillivray77 2 жыл бұрын
@@mishoamad9097 Without being able to see your skin it's not really something that can be diagnosed. Whiteheads are little plugs of dead skin, oil and debris that have not oxidised like blackheads. These mostly occur on oilier skin and really shouldn't be caused by dermoplaning. I would worry that it is something else ??? perhaps a rash, infection or even milia. I think it's important to get the "white things" diagnosed properly. Perhaps your family doctor/general practitioner or even your local pharmacist could help with that. Running a blade over bumpy skin can be problematic and that's why it's not recommended for active acne, where it could spread bacteria. Stretching the skin gently shouldn't cause whiteheads to form tbh. Diagnosing skin issues yourself is usually not the best approach and I think it's important to get this accurately diagnosed, prior to repeating any dermaplaning. I hope that helps.

I have a few questions. Chances are they've all been addressed in this video, but me being me, I just want to get the answers again. 1. This doesn't have to be done all over the face, right? 2. Being that it's by nature thinner hair, when it grows back, will it be almost sheer (odd question I know)? 3. If someone has darker hair, will there be a line of demarcation between the shaved hair, and skin that hasn't been shaved?

Good evening, Dr. Ellis. I saw your dermaplaning video today. I found it quite interesting and fact filled. I have not done this before. I am 59 years old and have a condition called poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with a high testosterone level. I have always had excess facial hair. To be honest, I am terrified if dermaplaning would work for me. My usual routine consists of Nair for face (which now burns my skin, as my skin has thinned as I have aged) or electric tweezing (very painful). My grandmother used to shave her face and continually grew a full, thick beard and mustache if she did not maintain her routine. I "defuzz" my face every 3 to 4 days, or it takes over. Suffice it to say, I am very self-conscious and would like to know if this is a viable solution for me. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated. I can not comprehend that this is done every 4 to 6 weeks. Thank you for your help with this. Have a great evening.
