I had this game, too. A good Rally-X clone, mice = cars, cats = rocks, time = fuel, and [EEK!] = [BANG] 😁

I always wondered what the oil slick analog was meant to be, given the change in setting. Powerful farts? I wondered that even as a kid before I knew this was a Rally-X clone.

fun fact. this game was originally rally x on vic-20 but because they coudln't get the license they rethemed it to radar rat race, and that's the version that got ported to c64. if you search rally x vic 20 it even has the arcade tunes in it and everything.

Not sure thats correct as it was Radar Rat Race on the Vic20 too. I still have it for mine, was the first computer game I ever played on my cousins Vic20 which resulted in me getting one for christmas that year. It is a Rally-X clone, but was def RRR on Vic 20. The Vic version looks identical to this.

Heh. I had a C64GS back in the day (still do, still working as well). Obviously, owning a C64 with no keyboard and only cartridge support massively limited the purchase opportunities, so that I pretty much had the entire collection within two years. Accordingly, I was chuffed to bits when a friend had this for their Commodore and loaned it out to me. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that you needed a keyboard to play.

Luckily, programmers soon learned the secret powers of the SID chip and created some REAL music for these games. And the demo scene is alive and well to this very day, continuing to find new things to do with it.

I think this is a well designed game: 1. Collect all the cheeses to complete the level before the timer counts down. 2. Each cheese collected is worth more than the last. 3. Avoid stationary cats, instant death. 4. Avoid mobile rats, instant death. 5. The star screen can be used to temporarily trap rats, but each star screen use counts against the timer. There is a lot of fun gameplay to be had with those simple mechanics. It is probably as deep as the most famous of maze games, Pac Man. I had a lot of fun with it as a youngster, but it could be better IMHO. 1. The soundtrack is a bit spartan. Don't get me wrong, I love the main theme, but it is quite short and repeats too often. A different theme song for each level, or group of levels, would be much better. 2. Only one color scheme for the entirety of the game is boring. Even Atari 2600 games would vary the color scheme. 3. Why are cats stationary? Wouldn't it make more sense for those to be glue traps? A glue trap would not cause death, but would delay the player while the rats catch up. 4. Why are the red rats chasing the blue one? Wouldn't it make more sense if those were kittens? Granted, I can't remember the story from the manual, but still think my idea is better. 5. Incorporate new, evolving mechanics as levels progress. Jumpman, a classic C64 platformer, is one example of this. 6. More ideas? Any modders out there want to take this one?

To me it would have made more sense if cats were chasing the mice & the stationary cats were replaced by Mousetraps. Other than that, spot on!

I just saw your comment and it gave me a chuckle. I guess Namco would agree that it's a well designed game, too (hell, they released it twice in the arcades themselves, not counting the visually overhauled versions). Some of the issues you had with the game could probably be chalked up to the fact that it was originally released on a cartridge, and I'm pretty sure those early ones were limited to 16k (the Europeans got a few limited release games much later on in the C64s life span that were considerably larger).

This game was released in 1981 for the Vic 20 and 1982 for the C64. Back then, this is what computer and video games were like. One person typically designed a game by himself/herself. This person typically wasnt a musician (only David Whittaker and Paul Norman were musicians first before becoming programmers), and the company paying for the development of the game didnt hire a musician, so most of the games had public domain music (Ive lost track of how many games used Johann Sebastien Bach's Toccata and Fugue BWV 565). Even then, most games only had the music on the title screen and not while the game was going on to preserve the memory required to run the game. It wasnt until 1985 that having music go from one end of the game to the other became a big thing.

2:00 and you're already further than I *ever* got in the game back in the 80s. ^_^ Why is there so much flickering in the game? Was it written in basic? It's something that wouldn't have bothered me in 1983, but it's so noticeable now.

The game was coded for Commodore MAX which wasn't as good as C64. It plays in compatibility mode, therefore advanced features of C64 weren't available.
