Welcome to my video using Derwent Drawing Pencils. I wanted to really put these pencils to the test and see how they performed on the Fabriano Artistico hot pressed watercolour paper. The result is better than I originally expected and I tell you what I love about these pencils in the video.
Thank you for watching my video. Please leave a comment down below, like my video with a "thumbs up" and subscribe to my channel. I upload a new art video every week, and work primarily in coloured pencil and traditional gouache paint. My focus is wildlife as I have a passion for conservation and biology, but I also do pet portraits and "how to" videos as well.

How intensely absorbing this performance was. I did not feel the time going by . . . the translation of the reference photo into the delicate strokes of pencil imagery was magical, but like the most strict and patient magical expertise in the world. Good magic takes time. I almost held my breath watching that branch appear, like it was being meticulously conjured, one tissue-light layer at the end.

You did a very good job with the blending, staying true to the pencil medium by not corupting it with any solvents. Beautiful. To be able to do this shows just how much with the artist's technique (you), and patience, and good pencils how much ART can be achieved. Again, beautiful. Thank you. GOD BLESS.

Thank you very much, that's very kind of you to say. I take pride in my technique though I'm not sure I would call solvents a corruption, just another tool for an artist to use. I don't use them as you've seen but it's merely personal choice.
@miriammoore1261
@miriammoore1261 3 жыл бұрын
You are right in some way. Solvents are a corruption because they change the chemistry of the pencil...it's the scientist speaking. As an artist, your view is understandable. Yet, Pencils are the least corruptable tool an artist can use if they choose. Then the viewer can see the prurity of the Art and the Artist's technique. Oils, pastels, watercolors, even inks to some extent require additives. An artist can take a pencil and really "go to town" with technique. The pencil without additives is the purist form of Art an Artist can create. Beauty...Ideal Beauty, or as close as the artist can get. We need this purity of Ideal Beauty right now: A type of hope of what will be when this part of human history has passed. GOD BLESS.

@@miriammoore1261you sound more like a poet than a scientist. Maybe a scientistpoet. Could be a cool username. Watercolor only requires water and that doesn’t corrupt the pigment. Pastels also don’t require ant medium to make art with. I get what you’re saying with the corruption being the scientific term using a solvent though.

Amazing love this drawing! My Polychromos dont go over the Derwent drawing pencils because they are way too opaque and the polychromos are very translucent. So I usually use my Derwent drawing for backgrounds and polychromos for fur and detail 😄😊😁😃👍

Thank you so much, you make a great point about the opacity, I just felt the polys didn't want to go over the waxy surface of the DD either, but I'll have to experiment more. Thanks for watching 😊

Excellent drawing and much appreciated and informative voice over. Derwent Drawing pencils might be the last pencils I would choose to do a bird picture, so it was a eye opening how successfully you were able to make these work for you. Of coarse tools are important but compared to the artist, not so much.

Thank for for this presentation, Bec. I have returned to coloured pencils for my creative muse. I have settled on Derwent tools for the reason that these were the most upmarket product available in my regional outlet in far north Australia. Some of the reviews suggest that the Derwents are quite hard but layer well, others that the product line is soft...time to fact check with presentations like this one. A near-irrelevant comment from an old school-teacher. You hold your pencils in a grip which is "wrong" but hold your blending tip in a grip which, from many years of instruction, is "right". I guess that there is not such thing as a right or wrong method of holding your art tool. Your results are superb. I stand corrected.
@brusheswithbec
@brusheswithbec 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment. The Derwent Line has so many different pencils available, so some are soft are others harder, so there is something for everyone when it comes to that. You wouldn't be the first teacher to mention my incorrect grip, lol. I am so used to it that it's simply what feels right for me and is how I have the most control. Any other position and I'd basically be learning to draw all over again.

Beautiful work Bec, I am a beginner and certainly no expert but I think the drawing pencils are waxed based and polychromos are oil based and that’s why they won’t work together.

I must admit I'm not a big derwent enthausiast, I have the procolours and they might be different. I actually prefer the polychromes. But the problem I have with the Derwents is that the colors are so pale and they seem to have little pigment. Yours don't seem to have that problem at all.

Hello there! Thanks a lot for this video. I'm starting myself with the same set of pencils, and noted that when y try to sharpen them in order to paint with details, they broke too easily. How did you achieve to use them that way? Could it be just my set that is broken or something? Excellent work! And is just amazing how you manage to make bright colours out of this earthy (but beautiful) set. Thanks again and please excuse my bad english!
@brusheswithbec

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it. They are quite a soft pencil so only sharpen to the finest point when you really need it, then you have to be very careful to use gentle pressure to not break that point. Sometimes it will break anyway. It's possible it could be your sharpener too, something about it may be weakening the core when you sharpen. Not sure how accurate it is but I've been told to twist the sharpener and hold the pencil still.
@dees3179
@dees3179 3 жыл бұрын
Juan, I’ve had better success with knives and razor blades than sharpeners. Cut the wood first then carefully shave the pigment block to shape. Very gentle pressure. But they will break if you press much. If you want to press you need something like polychromos which are designed for that. I’ve never managed to break one! I use those if I want to incise the surface for some reason.
