Des'ree Reveals Who Really K!lled Her Career
Okay, what would make a record label like Sony drop a super-talented, award-winning, non-problematic, and down-to-earth artist like Des’ree? And why is Beyonce’s name coming up again when it comes to another artist leaving the music industry?
I know that for a lot of people, the name Des’ree may not be instantly familiar but you may be familiar with a couple of her hits from the 90s like “Feel So High” which did not initially reach the UK top 40 but hit #13 when it was re-released in January 1992.

The 90s was a different era. You had to be old enough to understand why Desree wasnt considered "black" enough. From about '92 to the mid 2000s was the Hip Hop Soul era where artists like Mary J, Aaliyah, TLC etc were mainly singing r&b over hip hop tracks. It was extremely popular so if you didn't have that urban sound, you were considered pop. Only a few black artists were successful in that lane, like Seal and Sade. And even Sade went from pop to a slightly more Trip Hop sound in order to stay relevant in the early 90s. The cool kids at school just weren't checking for anyone who sang mainly pop, even if you were as good as Desree.

Wow. Thank you so much, Culture Spill, for this eye-opening video! I was just thinking about Des’ree the other day and listened to her megahit “You Gotta Be” for the first time in years. I was wondering why she had disappeared and had nooo idea what she had been through until I saw this informative video. Her struggles resonate with so many of us who are considered “left-field” but are in fact just human and trying to stay that way as we pursue careers that are meaningful to us. But now the tea has been served - and that’s because the message needs to be heard, because the times they are a changin’! That's what I really love in her songwriting,, compared to other artists who write in this music genre in the UK...her natural ability to talk about the things that are important but most people take for granted. I mean what other artists would write a line like ' I'd rather have a piece of toast' like she does in her 'Life' song. In the UK, ( if there is ever a Black-British Soul Genre', the songwriter would usually write in terms that instantly connect with Urbanism songwriting. You would. never hear or see a line ( from either a male or female artist) say they are not going out tonight because they are watching Big Brother on TV or the News in a song, but that is also the natural Humanity of Humans, as part of songwriting. When Desiree arrived on the scene, she was a natural breath of Fresh air, for Black- British Female Artists. We had NEVER truly had a Black- British Music Female Artist, that had so much class, incredible , cultural -conciseness and so much natural Humanity in songwriting. For a Black- British Female Artist, it was her natural Humanity that was the most important here, because other Black-British Female Artists at the time, were mainly embracing Black- British/ American/ Urbanism. Other Black- British Female Artists at the time were Street-wise and Sassy, and very rarely did this capture a natural and beautiful humanity such as Desiree achieved in British Popular Music. As I said previously....she is STILL regarded as the Black- British equivalent to Anita Baker in the United States.

It was as if her talent and magic was their’s for the taking. So proud she fought back, and WON! She’s doing well in the world and remains undefeated. Yes, she should keep singing, forever! Look how far she got without a nepo-baby connection and without booty shaking her way to the top! That’s real Black Girl Magic! 🔥🥷🏿

That's a hard answer to give because it's become even hard for artist with actual good music or positive music to gain a real following not just off name nostalgia alone. I'd I were her I'd put out music for enjoyment and to give some fans what they want but I wouldn't financially depend on it any longer because the music biz isn't what it use to be or how big artist portrayed it to be.
