Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 into an artistic, bohemian household in Chicago, Illinois. The eldest of five children born to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman, she has described her father as a beatnik. Beatniks were members of a social movement in the 1950s and early 1960s who subscribed to an anti-materialistic lifestyle. They rejected the conformity and consumerism of mainstream American culture and expressed themselves through various forms of art, such as literature, poetry, music, and painting. She was raised in the Hyde Park area, an island in Chicago's rough South Side housing projects.

I know this is just from an 80's fan, but I didn't know or maybe didn't pay attention to your substance abuse and most of your history in life, but hearing about the Fentanyl addiction along with heroine use, I have to say I am proud you fought those demons. My son is going through his addiction and cannot stop as much as he tried. I pray everyday for him and hope that he get what you had to stop and continue your sober life. I have to say I am extremely proud of you in all you have accomplished in live with all those obstacles. You are a beautiful woman. much love.

I have been a fan since the mid 1970's. I still listen to "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing" on a regular basis. I love that she sang back up vocals to rock artists like Steve Winwood on his hit song "Higher Love." Her collaboration with many other artists has always impressed me, that voice and her incredible talent make her one of my favorite entertainers. There is no one else like Chaka!

I was acquainted with Yvette at Calumet High School and ran into her occasionally in our Chicago ‘hood.. We were both in the Calumet Afro American Student Association. I was born and raised in Chicago. A couple of things the narrator of this story concerned me. Hyde Park was an island on the south side of Chicago, and they showed a picture of row houses (projects). I am 5 years younger than Chaka. In my lifetime, Hyde Park has always had middle - to high income residents. Also, by knowing her personally for a very short period before high school, I know some other things that were not mentioned, but because I would not want these things exposed about me, I am going to grant her the same respect.

@@sheryljenkins1925 , Yvette lived in Auburn Gresham and went to Calumet High School. She transferred to Kenwood High school in Hyde Park as a teenager. I remember running into her in the Calumet High School hallway and her talking to me about a fight or conflict that she’d recently had with a girl at Kenwood. Yvette was back at Calumet for a visit. Hyde Park has never been a low income or even a working class neighborhood. I agree with you. Hyde Park, was historically like an island surrounded by hard core ‘hoods.

Chaka Khan is hardly underrated! She has won numerous of prestigious awards and have been acknowledged repeatedly for her music with Rufus and as a solo artist all throughout her career. Chaka Khan is a legend in the music industry. She is one of the few old school female artists, who has real talent and knows how to sing. She doesn't lip sync and use gimmicks at her live concerts (like most of these young untalented singers of today who can't sing). Chaka Khan uses her gift that God has given her, which is her voice, the same as the late: Whitney Houston when she was alive, and her singing voice was in top form.

Chaka is one of the most influential artistes of her generation and, arguably, one of the greatest musical performers of all time. I have seen her live on hosts of occasions. One of the most memorable was her appearance at the St Lucia Jazz Festival in 2015. She was clean, so her dancing was co-ordinated and almost regal in execution. Best of all was her voice, she raged up and down the scales like an infant on a playground slide, but what she made to look effortless was actually a demonstration of divine talent and painstaking work and rehearsal. Chaka, we salute you. Our Forever Queen of Funk👑

"Tell me something good" was ONE of my favorite Chaka song. She did an interview once, making a statement about her dress. The interviewer was speaking about a scar on her tummy. Chaka explained, that scar brought life. I've never forgotten that. So, she wasn't just an entertainer.... She was a force of truth admist lies. She wasn't worried about what folks thought about her. Her journey required her to be thick skinned and have a quick wit and she did. I think Chaka made some people uncomfortable with the way she dressed back then. To me, it was a KICK ASS UNIFORM. I've seen folks attending proms, church and even the "red carpet" in a lot less. Cousin, " you've lit a fire that can't be extinguished, only fed" as my Uncle used to say. Much Respect 🙇‍♀️

Great assessment of Chaka Khan! A strong woman in a man's world! Over the past 40 years, I'd seen Chaka more than a dozen times. Her live singing voice was otherworldly, most of the time. The late 80's was probably her worst period vocally, but she rebounded in the early 90s with renewed energy and sublime voice. My favorite songs are too many to mention, but I will say her recordings with Arif Mardin were the most creative and artful. They were magic together. Then, her earlier recordings with Rufus were equally fascinating. Overall, Chaka's had one of the most exciting singing careers of any singer I'd been exposed to. She's always been a force to be reckoned with.

I love Chaka Khan! 🤩❤️💯 I admire her voice and her looks from when I was a child of 9 or something. I 'm 46 now and Chaka Khan is still one of my favorites. Never knew she had an addiction problem! Wow! I am so glad she is still with us, the same goes for Alexander O'Neal. I don't judge, people go through a lot of suffering and sadness in life and even if some people are superstars and world famous, they still remain fragile somehow, like all of us. Never saw a live concert of hers unfortunately, but the music is in my heart always. "I know you, I live you" is one of my favorites, also "whatcha gonna do for me", "through the fire"and the all time classic "I feel for you", that outfit in the video was an example to me from early age and if anybody would be an icon to me, it surely is Miss Chaka Khan. Always loved the name too, it is marked in my soul forever.❤️🍀💐 God bless you and keep you dear lady. 🙏❤️🍀 Precious love and respect to you , from Belgium 🇧🇪 ✌️ 💖

Some of our dark experiences are similar we both are Aries and our birthdays are a few days apart. I have always loved her and felt a connection through her soulful voice and music. Now I can connect with her closer relating to her painful hidden story and her victorious triumphs. She is an AMAZING artist and will always be an inspiration and motivation. True Fan For Life! Sending much-continued strength, peace, love, and blessings to you CHAKA...It's not how we fall in life it's how we choose to get up" Our past didn't dictate who we were born to be! Love You Always... Tasheba🥰😘🤗🌷🌹💐🌹🌺🌷🌹💝❤‍🔥💌💯

Chaka is the Queen of music and my heart! Ain't Nobody better or even close to her as the reigning Queen of Song. I'm a girl who was given courage to sing after falling in love with Chaka's voice. The first record I ever bought was Sweet Thing and I was somewhere around thirteen years old. I am now 61 and STILL Ain't Nobody better!! No need to tell me to love you cuz you never forget your FIRST love!!

Love Chaka❤ & pray for her all the time. I grew up with a life size poster of her on my bedroom wall from age 7 through college. Some Saturdays I'd spend the whole day listening to her. "Ain't nobody" better! Some other legends are just as good: Aretha, Gladys, Nancy, Mavis, Tina (Marie & Turner), Whiney & a few other rare talents. But, not one of them is a BETTER vocalists than Chaka. "Ain't nobody" better❣️

Chaka has always been my favorite female vocalist and still is. With so many songs, it's hard to say which is my favorite. But I have a strong affinity to "Stay" when she was with Rufus. "Any Love" on Masterjam was also really good. Of her solo songs, I love " Whatcha gonna do for me." She's a pleasure to listen to 🎉

My 1st concert was the Jackson 5, and my 2nd was Rufus, Prince, Rick James, I've seen them all. Rufus and Chaka Kan is still my favorite. Her albums are still my go to. Now my daughter listens to real music that tells stories about life. Smoking room, I'm a woman, stop on by are just a few. Love always your music.

I grew up with many genres of music being played in my household but didn't know who Chaka was until her hit , I fee for you . Although I was into the hard rock scene at the time , it was undeniable her voice had so much power and charisma . When there's talk of the greatest singers of the era her name should be in that conversation . One of the best ever .

I discovered Chaka in 1984 the album was “I feel for you”. I was all of a precious 12 years old🤣. I’m Gen X so that was during the break dance era. Then I started looking at all my moms albums she had of her and Rufus. Been in lover with music every since. What a voice, what talent and what a Queen she is 👑

I met her in person and sat and had dinner with her for a benefit to help African Communities in remote parts of Africa…it was by invite only I had gotten tickets because I volunteered with the organization…she was very friendly, humble, nice, she smiled alot and kept telling us not to be shy around she’s just like us 😳…she was making sure we all had food and was eating…she had them serve her food LAST…she sat slap dead next to me before though they had put her in the front by herself and she got in the mic and said why y’all put me up here away from everyone I don’t want to eat alone matter of fact I’m sitting at that table w those young ladies( me and my friend) all those Big Wig people were staring at us like we were nobody’s and asked Chaka was she sure…she gave the man who asked a stern excuse me type look and he apologized and came to our table and pulled her chair out …he said is this fine or do you want one of them to move she said why? For what? They were sitting here before me…he looked so stupid and embarrassed and Chaka looked at us a rolled her eyes and laughed 😂😂she said hello and smiled and she asked me did I get the chicken or fish as she was settling in her chair and like eating some of the salad at the same time and looked towards my plate I said chicken she had the chicken to this was before she was vegan and leaned in and whispered to me as she scrunched her face up in disapproval and said Im not eating it it’s dry but the salad is good how about you…I laughed so hard because it was dry…I told her I took only one bite…we laughed..I wanted so bad to tell her how much I love her music but I was shy…she was so pretty and smelled so good…her clothes and jewelry was expensive and nice…her eyes are absolutely beautiful in person…she made small talk about getting out of her heels her feet was hurting and it was hot in there which is was ..she definitely can carry on a convo she had her signature big hair but one of her earrings were bothering her..She took a hand held fan out of her bag and started fanning herself and looked around and told us can’t they turn the air up in here 😂 she was funny 😂 I smiled laughed and listened I was shy but my friend was talking..Chaka had to get up and gave a speech and donated ALOT to the benefit.

chaka is one of a kind. her voice... no words to describe. in the remake quincy made of "stuff like that", brandi sang one of the verses (valerie simpson's in the original) and chaka sang another. the difference in depth, power and clarity could not be more noticeable. no offense, brandi. some of my favorites: tell me something good, once you get started, you got the love, sweet thing, ain't nobody, ...

I saw her a few years back in Dallas and I am a witness. Chaka IS a GODDESS. She educated her audience about the balancing of the divine masculine and divine feminine in each body.❤ I had the coolest synchronicity as I was walking around a hospital where my Mom was a patient at the time, and I was humming Sweet Thing with a big smile on my face because I had a ticket to see Chaka that evening. All of the sudden, a beautiful woman passing me in the hallway stopped, held both my hands, and began to sing the song-she had a voice like an angel. She encouraged me to sing along with her. It was such a beautiful moment. She was so full of light and love. After we sang a few bars I learned she was a former backup singer for Chaka. She told me how amazing and gracious Chaka is., and that she lets her backup singer have the spotlight at concerts. 😮❤ It was so beautiful running into someone who knew Chaka on the same day I was to attend my first concert of hers. Chaka Khan is the sexiest woman on the planet, imho. I love you Chaka-thank you for the music👸🏾💫🌞🌖💥🥰🥰Long Live Your Funkness on High.🥰🥰🌸🌺🌸🌼🌺🌸🌼

I was introduced to her music when I was 11, now 60, I loved it then and now. I met Chaka on a fluke, not knowing that she was my crushes sister. I spent the night at his house and out comes Yvette (Chaka). She was bunking at his place in L.A. Mark and I used to skate together and I had heard that Chaka was his sister but I really didn't believe it. The sight of her made my mouth drop. She was really cool and just as gorgeous, in person. Blessings to the family and pray that all is well.

I heard this soulful voice in the heyday of the 70s when she was with Rufus. Every girl in school sang " Sweet Thing". I loved the fact that she would represent the Indigenous peoples with her choice of costumes and her voice carried the essence of the soul of our people perfectly, she can belt it out into the atmosphere and it would sink into your soul! I had the honor of meeting her backstage at one of her concerts and she was very personable, down-to-earth, and funny. We Love ❤️ you Chaka!! Wado!

I recently heard Bobby Watson of Rufus describe hearing Chaka for the first time in a rehearsal back in the early 70s. I first heard her live in a Stadium in the 80s, and couldn't believe the utmost exactness of her voice and sound. It was effortless! I was absolutely stunned! Mind you, I was mesmerized from the very beginning, hearing her on record, but IN PERSON?! She could never do any wrong in my eyes, as my love for her is unconditional.

Chaka, as a teenager you were possibly one of my greater influences! When Tell Me Something Good hit I was 14 and Chyle by the time I went away to college in 1977 that sultry "Ask Rufus" was my liberation anthem. I finally got to see you in concert in Atlanta, Georgia at the Omni not really sure what year it was, circa 1982. During the pandemic I discovered a hidden treasure a spiritual "Roll me through the Rushes", guuurrrll U sang da Holiness outta that song!!! Be strong our Queen of Funk and funk is my favorites secular genre'. Blessings to your family and your daughter is very talented, she did a great job in that Mikki Howard biop! Enjoy those precious grands and continued prayers for your son! Please do a Christmas Album!
