DeSantis STRUGGLES To Explain Slavery’s ‘Benefits’

The Majority Report w/ Sam Seder

Жыл бұрын

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis engaged in a contentious exchange with a reporter during a campaign stop in Iowa regarding Florida's newly passed controversial school curriculum, which suggests that enslaved people "developed skills" for personal benefit. DeSantis avoided directly answering the question about whether he believed there were beneficial aspects to slavery, instead defending the curriculum and accusing the reporter of misinterpreting it. The curriculum has faced criticism from Vice President Kamala Harris, who accused Florida of "pushing propaganda" on children and emphasizing the atrocities and dehumanization of slavery. DeSantis called Harris a liar and claimed that the provision about skills gained by slaves was in spite of slavery, not because of it. The curriculum changes have also faced opposition from Republicans, advocacy groups, and the country's largest Black conservative organization. As DeSantis campaigns for the GOP presidential primary, his stance on the curriculum has become a topic of contention among his rivals and has been a point of concern for his campaign in Iowa, where strong performance is considered crucial.

Reminds me of a discussion that took place in my 6th grade math class in the 70's in rural Alabama. Our teacher closed her classroom door (so no passersby could hear her), and proceeded to give a "TedTalk" about how pleasant slavery was: "It wasn't as bad as people try to say. It was against the law for slave owners to be mean or cruel to their slaves. All the slaves had to do was work and they got a place to live, clothing, food... They were taken care of. And it was way better than they had it in Africa." I have always wished my 12 year old self could have had the courage and knowledge to debate her. THAT is what current day GOP racists are so concerned about. The power of knowledge, the ability of those you are attempting to oppress to fight back and make you eat your vile words and actions, is a scary thing. They know the truth. They don't want to admit or face that truth...because they know how evil the truth makes them look.

It’s not just an absurd argument. It’s a deeply troubling one that borders on psychopathy. To argue that that slavery was beneficial because it granted slaves “skills” is to completely ignore the totality of slavery for what it is: the total dehumanization of human beings into property and the legal institutions built to support it. Any politician that doesn’t hold that as the central understanding completely misconstrues reality and should be laughed out of office for incompetence. They are either ignorant, sick, or evil.

When I first heard about this it made the hair in the back of my neck stand up and I could feel my blood starting to boil. I can explain the non benefits of slavery for Ron DeSantis. Sugar and cotton plantations made their owners extremely wealthy in fact it made some so wealthy they even named a town after them and erect a statue in their name as they did in Bristol England UK. The transportation and selling of human being was inhumane and barbaric and it’s a chapter in history that we can never forget.

The greatest issue why this rhetoric in Florida is not just the obvious (slavery was not beneficial) but it is also a complete misrepresentation of the skills/knowledge enslaved Africans already had prior to enslavement. We already know how to farm, we were already blacksmiths, we had skills. In fact colonial powers knew which tribes and groups of people could do and purposely went after those specific groups of people for enslavement.

Yeah. Anyone thinking that the enslavers were wasting their precious time and resources wandering around an unfamiliar and unforgiving landscape just to find small groups of nomadic Africans with 'no skills and lesser intelligence ' is not thinking logically. The various peoples living in Africa developed the skills and tools they needed to survive alongside their environment. Agriculture, fishing/hunting, architecture, ecological understanding, blacksmithing, trade, nomadic skills, etc. Those skills take years to develop and perfect. All they were taught in the Americas were how to apply the skills they already had to whatever the slaves masters needed. Those societies would not have survived the thousands upon thousands of years in their environment without developing their own technologies. Racists seem to think that Africans were sitting around doing nothing until they were enslaved, though. right, sure. They just didn't care what those different societies were doing if it wasn't making (the enslavers) a profit.

There was thousands of riots of white mobs murdering blk people, talkings all their assets, taking the homes that wasn’t burn down, and none of them punished or pay back for their property loses or assets and this after they build their community up. There a strong reason the community is kept down. It fear of a huge group of them being to successfully and they decided to share those skills training they give them. The government make sure to have pay for blk leaders that don’t represent the community at all but to be sure they stay in place. They never no real equity just the fake illusion of it. What I see is mess up is the same thing they use against blk for decades to destroy their communities is now being flip back on them like their own drug epidemic which they not jailing they for life sentences in mass, etc. karma is starting to hit home for them and they getting a taste of their own medicine. This is causing them to lose their minds because it’s the hand of God Almighty that they can’t turn to a sell out or control. They can just try to deal with the after effects and do replacements angry on the blk community which had nothing to do with all their horrible decisions they made in the past that coming back on them. It reminds me of Pharaoh in the Bible as judgement got harder on them, they in turn made times even worse for the Israelite. This is what we seeing a fall of a empire in real time.

DeSantis and torture at Gitmo "Mansoor Adayfi describes it as one of the worst stretches of his 14 year imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay. In 2006, he was in the midst of a hunger strike with a number of his fellow detainees in protest over the conditions inside the notorious prison. A new team had been brought in to break the strike with a more aggressive form of force-feeding. One day, he recounts with emotion in his voice, he was strapped to a chair in the yard by his head, hands, waist and feet, and a feeding tube was forced into his nose. He was bleeding and vomiting and screaming while an assortment of uniformed military personnel watched from the side. Years later, now released from the camp without charge and trying to rebuild his life in Serbia, Adayfi came across a photograph online of someone he says he recognised from that day. Until then, he says he knew the man as a young Navy lawyer stationed at the prison, but now he had a name: Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida."
