Today we take look at two desert plants which are known to have been used for hygiene: The Soaptree Yucca's roots are known to contain a chemical salled saponins which the natives used as a body soap , shampoo and laundry detergent. The second plant is called Creosote or greasewood, known to have antibacterial properties and when wet, makes the lovely smell of 'desert rain'.

I had a boss who was diagnosed with renal cancer. He was very into desert survival and ancient practices. He read about creosote as a cancer cure. I gathered him a large bucket of clippings. He made tea and drank 4 glasses a day. When he returned to the doctor, the cancer was gone! The doctor was amazed. My boss lived, cancer free, for many years after that. But it sure does taste nasty.

Removing the top and upper root doesn't always kill the yucca. I did this with yucca glauca (I removed about a foot of root and top) and the next year a healthy yucca came out of the deep root that was left. They are very tough!

Its kind of like the South Texas brush lands, except without the Mesquite forest. A good amount of the plants are available here or have a similar variant. Unfortunately i don't have the cameras and software to share the info I know.

You can use the smoke on your skin too, also bathing in it clears the skin of infections or sores. We drink it but we probably built a tolerance of it cuz we've used as far as we can remember.

I'm in Oklahoma and we have Yucca someone transplanted into the yard. i tried to move it because it multiplied and began to obstruct my garden shed entrance. i dug them up and made a hedge out of them along one side of my property. i left only a few small chunks of root. it turns out these plants are immortal. they grew back from the small root fragments and now i have more than i started with where i dug them up. even the ones left on top of the dirt grew new plants. The leaves are more like bear grass but it produces the same tall flower spikes and the same flowers as yours. i haven't seen it fruit though. it is in the shade so that may have something to do with that though. and the root looks the same except that it has nodules that look like iris or ginger roots though darker. and any one of those roots or any part thereof will make a new plant. In fact i broke a few off from their roots by accident and i planted just the above ground part of the plant and those eventually renewed growth too.

Junkyard Fox am honored. I grew up by a creosote plant which produced 4 ALS fatalities. My Mother was one. 4/10/08. We breathed it in every night 4 years. I've fibromyalgia and suffered heart attacks and am trying...true to form...MAN UP. Im a girl but wanted to Marine up. I'd would have been #16...but I was too tiny. 5' 100 lbs. Texas is a beautiful but unforgiving piece of mother earth. Always respect...but always fear. Its called survival. I will...out of IMMENSE Respect for my mom...who was too blind to drive but sewed...ironed...and raised enough food for us when it got too hot for me and Daddy to roof. Respect your elders folks...I'm almost done but am writing notes from ancestors to my kids n grandkids5. They need our help more now than ever.

Yucca is originally from your region, but one strain (at least) has globalized and is used ornamentally. I walk past Yucca and see them around the office every day here in South Ontario Canada. The leaves are not an easy thing to process into string, been giving that a go this year, and the flower spikes are just starting to show may have to confound my coworkers this year and make myself a bowl of Yucca on Rice.

I tried the yucca root and washed my babies clothes, it sure did work. But it's really tedious to dig out the root. I'd probably use it more often if they sold yucca root because i had a hard time. It smells like jicama, not unpleasant but not a neutral smell. Sincerely yours , Laura from El Paso

Hi Mr Desert 🐶 Dog (Complimentary, not a put down 😉), if you let the yucca root dry up/out for a while before pounding to make a soap powder, will it still retain as many sapponins, or do they get dried up and away with dehydration? I have plenty of Yucca Elata on my property, but also arthritic fingers/hands. Enjoying your ventures so much, thank you for bringing them to the public.

not entirely certain on how long it can last but im sure you can druy them and just reactivate the saponins when you wet it
