Desert Tech MDR - 6.5 Creedmoor - On the Clock

We've installed the 6.5 Creedmoor conversion barrel into the InRange MDR, which couldn't have been easier. With the longer barrel, Desert Tech muzzle break and longer handguard, this design handles very well with quite minimal recoil for being chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. This raised an interesting question - how well could this platform, in this cartridge, compete on the clock at 2g-ACM against all the intermediate, mostly 5.56) competition?

Keep in mind that the 6.5 Creedmore is not based on the 308Win/7.62 NATO case. Rather it is closer to the 250Savage (or 22/250) Ackley Improved (Hornady claims it's from the 30 TC cartridge but look at the SAAMI case drawings) necked up to 6.5 or down to 6mm (6mm Creedmore). It has less case taper than the 308Win and a shorter rim to shoulder junction and a steeper shoulder angle.When stacked in a larger capacity magazine, it would need less mag body curvature. The 25 round P-Mag must have caused binding because of this difference in case taper.

If you pay attention to comp custom mad 1911 mags and high end bolt guns custom mags the rounds barely fit in there and sometimes hurt to load all the rounds in but I've also seen a few custom mags with tons of room but most the time very tight tolerances so I'd say the recoil and harmonics do heavily effect a mag , i think a heavy spring and good tolerances the mag should run but the bigger you go you can't just keep adding harder springs because it will be impossible to load and you run into other issues with feeding just my thought I think squeezing 30 round mag for 6.5 is possible just will require some time

Karl…after seeing several reviews, including yours a few years ago, I purchased an MDRX in 223 Wylde since shortly❤ after introduction. Since then, because I enjoyed it so much, I’ve sold off my AR15’s. A short while later I purchased a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Enjoyed that so much I purchased another frame and then had two MDRX’s. Some days at the range I shoot them both. Got rid of my AR10. Heck, had so much fun with my MDRXs, I ordered a 300 Blackout and got rid of my AR9 pistol. I’ve built a nice little collection of MDRXs. Me…I see myself as a protector, not a collector. I’ve learned in life that learning one weapon system incredibly well is a good thing. I have no problems with any of these MDRXs. You learn how to use them and maintain them, and they just run.

I have a couple of the Magpul Bipods, 1 black and 1 FDE, and I am impressed with them. For a $100 you get a Made in The U.S.A. bipod that is lightweight, very well made and looks & feels solid. The price is perfect. Anything less expensive is either foreign or has too much going on with springs and bits that stick out and get hung up on anything. There are other well made, slim, made in the U.S. bipods but they are far more expensive. Magpul really has a winner here, so much so that that finding one in stock can take you on quite the journey!

Is it the feed-angle/geometry of the entire cartridge stack (or the follower?) causing a problem in ANY 25-round magazine? Or is it only the polymer feed-lips of the Magpul mags specifically? I'm not particularly trying to defend Magpul... I just want to understand exactly what is the functional root of the issue. E.g., will 25-round Lancer mags work? Will mags of any capacity work as long as they're the straight-body style rather than curved? What's the real cause of the malfunctions?

What is the problem with clearing malfunctions with other Bullpubs mentioned in the video? As far as i know with the FAMAS, AUG, TAVOR and L85 you can see the same via the ejection port, as you can see with the AR15, AK's ect. So why would it be harder to clear a malfunction with those? I can imagine it be harder with the MDR or the FN P90 due to them beeing more different.

@James Harding quite a bit, I'd think, as barrel life is as much to do with stress (heat and fouling) as it is with pure round count. So long as you temper your expectations I'd imagine these barrels could perform well past their expected lifespan

@The_PotionSeller 3 жыл бұрын
2-3K is a super low estimate. 7k should be more in line, and if you can afford 7k of 6.5, saving for another barrel shouldn't be too much of an issue

@@The_PotionSeller Yeah that's like the estimate people used to give for hot .260 Remington in the past. 6.5 Creedmoor's sharper shoulder angle and slightly lower case volume should increase barrel life, especially if you're not expecting benchrest competitive accuracy and shooting factory ammo.

How does a 5.56 MDR stack up against something like a AR-15 on time trials? Is there a significant difference in speed on CBQ style matches? And does it have better long range capability then a standard configuration rifle (like an AR-15)? I'm really curious to know if a best-of-breed bullpup is competitive with standard configuration rifles and carbines at short range stuff, and noticeably better at long range shooting, or is it just good "for a bullpup".

It's interesting to see tho how sensitive the MDR was to overgasing. Any guesses as to why that is? My guess is that the bolt travel is too short for the longer cartridges and more gas means the bolt bounces back too soon.

Stoppage can be cause by multiple reasons, i guess i saw one? When you rest your gun on the barricade hole with the front guard. You have no problem. But when you rest your barrel on that hole, you start jamming. Steel are flexible, it looks solid and straight but if you put some weight on it, it will bend, you take the weight off, it reflex back. If you put a caliper on such a setting, it may run 2~3 thou upwards, it is not big, you may shoot 1~2 inch higher. The key is, it is not true anymore. I won't say it is all the reason cause the jam, but i believe it contributed.

As an owner of an MDR I really appreciate you doing multiple videos on its different configurations. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe you have the most testing on video with the MDR. I have the stock .308/16-inch set up and also use the 25-round PMAGs, so I'm very glad to know about the feeding problem should I ever convert to 6.5 Creedmoor. I would be very much interested in seeing how the MDR performs in .300 Blackout, should that opportunity arise.

It might be me but a few times I thought you were shooting into the drum/barricade (see @9:14 for example). Maybe an issue with a bullpup as the shortened profile does not force the shooter to clear the edge (so to speak). Having said that, I really enjoy your videos on the MDR platform. Seems like a game changer.
