We create three root over rock Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) bonsai using prized cultivars Deshojo and Nishikigawa, and a selected unique purple seedling from my personal maple collection. We use the stones Afghanite, Seiryu, and Amethyst to craft one of a kind future bonsai plantings. In a future episode we will learn the various techniques of propagating specialty Acer palmatum cultivars through air layering, traditional rooted cuttings, and aeroponics.

I love creating root over rock and always use rafia because it degrades within that first year. I was impressed with the use of black mesh sround the exposed roots - seemed a lot easier than trying to cut a plastic pot etc. I always bury mine deep and then remove soil each year. I will have to give your approach a go this year. Three very promising maples :)

Maybe you can use that broken pond basket from your last video! 😆 I’ll look forward to watching you give it a go. In other news, it’s Japanese maple seedling collection season here in zone 8a, Virginia, U.S. Are you sprouting yet in the UK?

I love that you're willing to try Japanese maples with root-over-rock style. It seems like everyone I see online pigeonholes trees into one style, and Japanese maples are "supposed" to be delicate and whatnot. I almost exclusively work with Japanese maples, but I like varied styles of tree, so I'm also interested in trying RoR and maybe even cascade some day.

Good luck giving it a go! I hope you have success. Likewise, I work mostly with Japanese maples, and I’m interested in trying them in all the different styles I can. 👏🏽 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

Thanks for tuning in! 🙏🏽 I love my purple seedling (one of my first trees) but I’m probably most excited about seeing some corked up exposed roots on the nishikigawa. 😂 🪨 🪴 🍁

Deshojo is an amazing cultivar with great spring color! I’m “old school” and prefer the OG Deshojo over the newer (also VERY NICE) Shin Deshojo……. But I also think that the Katsura maple has a nicer spring flush color than OG Deshojo………. Thank you for sharing this!!! Keep up the inspirational work

I’m a big fan of Katsura as well, between that color and the tiny leaves, hard to beat. Last autumn the colors were spectacular too! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁 I have 3 Katsura air layers settling into pots this year from last summer layers. Looking forward to making more so I can build a forest planting with them. I already have a nice muted blue-green Tokutake rectangle waiting for them. Depending on my propagation success this year, it may be a new project for next spring! 🤩

A clean and precise job. The seedlings have perfect roots for this style, they fit perfectly, it looks like you drew them with a pencil. 🙂

Thank you very much! In my first year of bonsai, I tried creating root over rock with older material, and the roots were already fully lignified. I see now that we have to create these with young trees and patiently grow them over years. 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

Maples are suitable for many styles of bonsai. One that is challenging and has many rules and conditions is the forest. Have you ever thought about making a video (or several) about creating a maple forest? I'm very interested in this style and would love to see how you approach it. Thank you very much!@@acer_p_bonsai

I have another video of putting together a small Oridono Nishiki forest. I only had 5 trees, so will add additional trees after rooting more cuttings of this variety. In the future I plan to make more specialty cultivar forests, when I have propagated enough cuttings.

Great video as always😍 sometimes I wonder why not more people use gemstones for root over rock, I used a random greenish stone last time no expert so no idea what kind of stone it is, I also recently thought about doing a root over quartz, would ne nice no?😂❤

I think any hard stone that will give a nice analogous or a complementary color to the tree leaves or bark should work well, depending on your aesthetic goal. Good use of a pretty green stone! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

The little Deshojo in the video you rooted in fall...did it have a dormancy this winter? If not, do you think it will do just fine through another growing season?
@acer_p_bonsai
@acer_p_bonsai 4 ай бұрын
This is a very good question, and I’ve asked myself the same thing. At the end of the day, if I hadn’t experimented with these cuttings over winter, I wouldn’t have them now, so no loss if they don’t make it and I will be making many more this summer. To answer your question: NO, they did not get dormancy; and YES, ai think they will continue growing fine over the remainder of this warm season. To fully answer your question, here’s the back story on how it all went down. I moved from NY to VA last summer, and purchased many of my maples after the move. My first round of cuttings were taken the third week of August. I had good success using my Aeroponic propagator for the very first time, but had a few mishaps with power outages and humidity control, and I have learned a lot through that trial and error. I had a few dozen successfully root, across several cultivars. I made the huge mistake of planting my first batch of cuttings in a partially organic soil mix 9 Seigen 8 Deshojo all in one pot. I decided to try to push them to grow through winter. I probably should have just moved them to the greenhouse to go dormant, and I definitely should have planted them in individual pots. Fungus gnats tormented me despite various treatments, and moisture was hard to manage leading to some root dieback in the low circulation indoor grow setup. I will never again use organics for indoor propagation. As for the Nishiki Gawa cutting in this video, I purchased the tree as a tiny 1 gallon from Mr. maple in late fall, and it had already dropped most of its leaves, but I decided to try a few cuttings just for fun. 4 rooted, 2 did well, and one might still be alive but hasn’t pushed leaves. So the Nishiki Gawa here went from the propagator into a small pot in December, into a larger pot in January. Then this video was filmed a few weeks ago in March

@@acer_p_bonsai Thanks for the reply and very informative. I look forward to seeing the progress on the cuttings. Mr.Maple is awesome, I'm looking to get an Allen's Gold when available, which also gets somewhat rough bark.
