Terry I'm a great fan of your videos, looking forward to part 2. There are some other root over rock videos out there but I appreciate the precision with which you give advice. As a relative beginner to Bonsai I've found it valuable to absorb many sources of information before taking action. Just want to say I appreciate you.

That’s great Justin. Thanks for that feedback, I appreciate it very much. Yes, it’s good to research different sources and then make up your own mind. Different sources which sometimes make conflicting statements might add to your confusion though but that’s bonsai for you. Good luck.

Enjoyed your video. I grew some trident maple and forsythia cuttings this spring. I'm planning of doing a root over rock for both of those species next spring.

Well I’m excited and have everything needed. Tried a few ficus over rocks but never been that enthusiastic about the results I’m keen to try some trident maple, have about 20 cuttings waiting to get a bit thicker.( trident maple is one of the best trees I’ve seen on a rock they seem to hug the rock tight as f if you know what I mean.) 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼

Yes Chinese maples definitely love being planted onto rocks. Ficus however do too, perhaps you did not give them enough time? When their roots come into contact with the rock and it’s warmth they seem to go into overdrive.

Matt sorry to disappoint but I decided I am going to use other material on this rock but needed to start it off from cutting. So perhaps beginning of new growing season if the cuttings take.

I'm sorry to sound a bit critical but your pumice looks a lot like Kanuma soil which is another type of clay with a higher acidic level typically used for azaleas. I've been using pumice for some years now and it looks a lot different to what you have there. Do you source your pumice in South Africa or New Zealand? Maybe you get it from a different area of the world? Pumice is generally very white with some other darker colours mixed in.

Hello Jim, thanks for the comment. Having trained in Japan I am very familiar with Kanuma and I do import this and sell it on my site too, it is much softer than pumice and also yellower particularly when wet. The pumice I sell is from Japan and is called Hyuga (Japanese pumice) and is as you point out not as white as the pumice available elsewhere. It is still pumice however.

I looked up images of Chinese Maples. What is the difference between these and Japanese maples?

Great question Mark! Unfortunately a detailed response is too lengthy for this platform as there are a lot. Visually however Chinese or Trident maples as the name suggests has 3 lobes on the leaf. Japanese maples have 5. This is a very easy way to tell them apart. They are both Acers though.

what do you use the cement for?
@TerryErasmusbonsai

Sometimes if you have a stone which does not have a wide or flattish base, making it difficult to keep up in the early stages of development, then you can cast a base onto the stone which helps a lot.
