You are an amazing teacher, and the whole package: Design, CAD, forging, grinding... I love your channel!

I love using CAD before I make a knife. It really helps get the kinks out of the design and gives me a guide to what it should look like three dimensionally before I make it.

Walter thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been making knives for years. In the middle of 2018 I bought a Tormach 1100 PCNC. I had figured profiling out with F360 but not how to create the bevels. Thanks to this video I now have that figured out. Thank you so much. Joshua

Thanks Walter, old school goldsmith etc., Appreciate your stuff! Not making excuses, I use old style techniques to afford me focus to combat chronic pain. No matter how we get there, arriving at our destination is the most that counts. Pain is a form of concentration we can utilize if we have too. Think your videos are just great, Thankyou! Perhaps I will checkout one of your blades in future, Mr. R. C. Douglas.

This reminded me of another Walter, the infamous "Dr Walt" of Cadkey/Keycreator fame. Had the privilege to take some of his classes back in the day. Never forgot some of his CAD techniques, of course as software improved they changed. Interested in your next CAD video and how you design for manufacture and the fixtures you use for holding the blades. FYI started in the CNC business when we used punched tape to load the programs.

If anyone wants to make some templates or designs for fee. DraftSight CAD is pretty handy! That’s what I’ve been using. Basically and Auto CAD clone.

One thing I would like to mention Walter, If you are serious about, And I mean serious about designing anything , whether software, or on paper, Both are equally effective with correct application, Consider that before cad programs, etc., stuff got done, for centuries. Keep up the good work!

I use to draw my designs out, and then made fun of the people who used CAD, but then they had the last laugh because I tried it out, and now I loved it! After I got use to how it all works, I can now design a knife to perfection. My pin holes are centered, they are the same distance apart from one another without doing any guess work, put the cross hairs to find the center of the holes I want drilled out. And know I'm designing a dagger which would be a pain keeping everything symmetrical if i was drawing it out. After I'm done with a design, I just print it off and get to working on it.

Excellent video. Somewhat new to fusion but answered a lot of questions. For the guys (like me) that are new to CAD/CAM programs, particularly Fusion 360, the "Autodesk Fusion 360 Black Book" by Gaurav Verma Samar is an invaluable tool.

I don't know Fusion but I have done a lot of Auto Cad work. I agree about using trimmed circles for design, but I thought someone told me that some of the coordinate details are lost to the CNC (or water jet, or whatever) when the coordinates of the arc is not called out in the first place. thoughts?

A tip for younger makers, if you have a university email Autodesk has almost all of their products for free as a student edition. That includes AutoCAD etc. This won't help much with Cam per say but if you are using it to make a template it can be a helpful tool and make it easy to familiarize yourself with CAD.

Nothing to do with subject of this video, please help me out, I'd just finished stock removal of my 1st knife(learned from all of your awesome videos) but I don't have the necessary tools to heat-treat! Do you or do you recommend any company to do heat treat? O1 steel. Please help

Hey Walter, I'm just starting with knife making and I have made blades but I cant heat treat because local laws prohibit the use of open fire. Now I have been suggested propane torches but those also are not allowed in my apartment. The one thing I could think of would be a barbeque, a household propane one which is allowed where I live. Could you let me know by any chance if this would work for quenching? This is so that I can actually get a working tool then I would temper in my oven. Thanks and your videos are great!

You sir can go to hell making that look so damn easy.. I tried it once...and only once...i had a hard enough time getting a 2 dimensional blade drawn out with a cad program...ill stick to 2d paper and pencil

Splines... give me gas. I've been teaching an Introduction to Engineering Design class for 13 years and Autodesk Inventor is the primary tool. This would be dead easy to run up in Inventor. But splines... They can get out of hand to the point where it becomes like trying to stack marbles when trying to keep them properly relating to each other in a sketch. The user interface is much different than what you're using, but all of the tools are there to do exactly the same operations. I'll be retiring within the next two years and will loose access to the software, so I need to find a replacement that I can afford. Inventor is about $1900/year!

Pencil, paper, and French curve seem so much easier to me.

looked into Fusion 360 on their website ...... almost caused me a second heart attack when i saw the "yearly" ???? price . Still nothing really hobby friendly for retired people when it comes to cad/cam software .

why would i invest in such an expensive way of designing my knives, if i can just draw them on paper...
