For the past five years, I have been drawing non-stop and mostly just practicing. This has drained all the inspiration and creative zeal I had at the beginning. Now I have the skills, but no inspiration, and then the pressure from neural networks added to it. This state was depressing, and I didn't know what to do next. But your recent videos have inspired me, made me rethink my approach to my art, and helped me see where I need to go from here. The fire within me has been reignited and drives me forward. Thank you for what you do.

Totally feel this cause I've been struggling going in and out of this exact thing for the past decade and a half. It's not always certain but going back to what originally inspired you in the beginning sometimes helps. For some of us, we can just play a game or something and be inspired to start a whole project, other times you find yourself becoming bored with your own ideas no matter how good they were and still could become something at a later date. I've shelved so many ideas from the past but found that sometimes if you revisit your old sketches and stories you can find elements from them to combine into a new idea even if it means taking ideas from 3 or more old projects and repurposing them into something new with a twist. I know this probably won't help but I feel your pain because I've been really sad trying to work a day job and find a way to re-ignite my passion and I'm on board with you, Feng Zhu has helped me on my journey even though I started as an environment artist who learned every aspect of game design from animation to programming and I graduated high school thinking I was gonna be a manga-ka. I hope you're finding what drives you cause I'm getting the same motivation knowing Feng Zhu is still dedicating his free time out of the goodness of his heart to help those of us who have been in need of guidance on our quest to entertain the world.

some notes if anyone's in need of a quick review: Easy vs Hard (left vs right) 1. Night vs. Day - 8:00 2. Moody weather vs. Good weather - 8:49 3. Foggy vs. Clear - 9:06 4. Silhouette vs. Direct lighting - 9:27 5. Monochromatic vs. Full color spectrum - 10:02 6. Abandoned vs. In use - 10:38 7. Reclaimed by nature vs. Maintained - 11:08 8. Mega Structure vs. Human sized structure - 11:33 9. Distant view vs. Close up - 12:33 10. Ancient vs. Modern Designs- 12:59 11. Iconic Cultures vs. Global cultures (highly identifiable vs. widespread) - 13:29 12. Classical Design vs. Modern Design - 14:24 13. Geometric Structure vs. Organic Structures (all man-made) - 15:09 14. Exterior vs. Interior - 15:34 15. New Showroom vs. Lived in - 16:19 16. Natural vs. Man-Made - 17:04 17. Segmented hard surface vs. Smooth soft surface - 17:24 18. Non-human vs Human - 18:19 19. Old vs. Young - 19:09 20. Loose Clothing vs. Tight fitting - 19:49 21. Stylized vs. Photo real - 20:39 22. Make believe functions vs. Real Functions - 21:44 23. Dark/Evil vs. Light/Good - 22:04 24. High Details vs. Minimum details - 22:19 25. Exposed function vs. Hidden function - 22:54 The way I think about this is in terms of opposites. If I inspect one, what is its counterpart. It's counter part will be either easer or harder. easier stuff is highly reproduceable and not as identifiable to the work but harder stuff requires more finances and or a higher visual library. 90/10 - pull 90% from the real world and focus your maximum efforts on the 10%; story and selling point. Harder projects either have more of the hard stuff or very little easy stuff wherein you have to make more of it up.

This video could have completely changed the course of my life 8 years ago. I tried building my portfolio exclusively out of the harder content, knowing it would give me a competitive edge, despite lacking some key fundamentals such as value painting and color theory. Days turned to months turned to years, and my portfolio remained incomplete. I'm focused on growing as a graphic designer right now, as that is the career I've found myself in, but this video will be an invaluable resource when I'm ready to make my next push into the entertainment industry. Best of luck to all those pursuing this career!

No matter how much time passes your videos are timeless and relevant for many industries. I rewatch a lot of your videos and everyone inspires me to keep creating because it’s what I love to do. I often dreamed of getting a job in concept design and had a few low level gigs. But it’s not the job it’s as you say the love of creating, being drawn into other worlds and wanting to know how things work. That’s the secret sauce brother. Keep the passion coming Feng and special thanks to Emmanuel. Staying tuned for life.

Thank you so much for this really helpful and informative video. I quit my engineering career to pursue my passion for art approximately six years ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't go to art school at that time, so I had to figure out everything for myself, both in artistic and technical aspects. I wish I had had this kind of education earlier and fellow artist friends to hang out with and talk about all this stuff. Videos like this inspire me to keep pushing hard and keep dreaming about working someday on the films and games I love.

Thank you so much for these videos, i truly mean it, it's so refreshing to have real sensical and synthetised information in this massive internet space full of clutter and misinformation, and for FREE too!! Little tangent but, i was trying to do some verbally demanding work while listening to this, but it was difficult because i couldn't focus on either, so i decided to keep listening and watching while drawing instead. In a discord i'm in, people are challenged this month to draw mechs so i decided to draw one. I remembered the previous episodes about the who and why, thinking about what this robot will be, so i went with something that'd help me in this moment, which is a robot that could listen to anything that you desired and translated it into synthetised information or direct data injection, perhaps with a screen and so forth. And then, i thought why would we need this? a big human sized robot wouldn't be useful for this scenario especially when a small gadget could do exactly that. Then i thought about in what scenario would a robot this scale be needed? So the utility changed, it becme something that could record in the wild or in buildings to collect data and decipher multiple discussions going on at once and divide them through some sort of ai algorithm inside the robot, being able to identify everything around it and make an efficient digest of all of it. It could show this information through its screen or in braille for blind & deaf people. Who would need this robot? Perhaps an evil scenario that would enjoy knowing everything going on around their office and weed people they deem unfavorable out of the company; Or maybe nature scientists that'd use this robot to analysis the fauna and flora of an area safely and with accuracy. Many more problems in it needed fixing in its design or purpose and all of it because i took an idea and asked questions to it, just like in the previous episodes. Now the hilarious thing is that while i was doing this, you said the exact thing and i was like "THAT'S LITERALLY...!! what i'm doing" XD, on the part where you say that the 90% of real world gets affected by the 10% and how the 10% will give all the design problematics that will shape the other 90% of the concept, turning it into something unique! I don't know, it was just really great listening to a class all while executing it at the same time ^^' Sorry for rambling, and thank you again for these amazing videos!

Tiny note, you can still cut frames in live action fight scenes, and Asian cinema is most know for it, not sure about The Raid, but in The Raid 2 they do it a lot, when punches of kicks go in they cut a couple frames before the impact to make it punchier 😉

You know, this was very insightful, in so far as determining if I really want to aim towards professional designing in this manner. I've been a gamer for over 25 years, and the industry standards you've touched on may explain my gradual distaste for modern games. Recently I felt like many of the AAA titles have been using the same story beats, environments, character types, and I've really been bored with them conceptually as games. Of course, that isn't to say the work isn't amazing, but the reliance on realism really makes them feel a little stale on my palette, like playing a movie rather than a game. I've been tending to gravitate towards abstracted game concepts like Enter the Gungeon, Cuphead, Undertale, Hollow Knight; I imagine a portfolio for that space looks quite different than what you've demonstrated? I don't know if it's worth diving into all that deeply, as I feel that what you do and teach is awesome, but a very different world than I imagine for the games I'd like to design. Maybe there's some overlap though? I'd like to hear what you think.
