In this episode, we will be looking at a fast, easy and FREE way to print topographical maps on your 3D printer! As in the days of old, it was a pain involving all kinds of software vodo yet today a few clicks of a button on a website you have a printer STL file!

You are 100% correct and if combine lidar data and some coding you can do some crazy things with it!

So...I know I'm kind of late to the game here...but can I use this same process to print a topographic map using a resin printer?

When file downloaded i cant see the city buildings only flat ground... i followed step by step

Cool. How are you planning to orient the print? Flat on the bed or standing upright?

I wanted to print Texas World Speedway before it is destroyed. Also how can I scale it up in pieces to fit an 8'X4' board. In pieces 2'x'2?

Sound cool, to 8 foot x 4 foot I would divide it into either 10x10 or 12x12 depending on the printer as you will want to some room at the end and glue them up. I have seen the artists that use this method to do large city-scapes...

I have followed all of your setting for my town, Fort Collins Co, and I don't see any of the buildings. Do you have any ideas where I'm going wrong?

You wont see buildings, these are terrain maps they show elevation. If there is a tall building you will see bump like for a church or a high-rise. To do actual buildings you need lidar data and a whole lot of coding to bring the point cloud together...

This looks like your photo is showing buildings and Streets? Mine didn't show any of that just elevations. How can I do one like yours? thanks

So are you talking about the STL or the actual print? As covered in the video, this is where you need to play with the "Vertical Exaggeration (Z-scale)" as the image you see is x5 and yes larger buildings are bumps and streets are depressions. However when it comes to printing, it will depend on your nozzle as 0.4 is still rather big for this believe it or not as 0.2 would be best but it will take forever! Best would be a resin printer...

@@DIY3DTECHcom Well ultimately an STL so I can print it. Resin printer is way out of my budget and I don't think I'd use it all that much. However, I'll see where this goes. I do have 0.2 nozzle as well as others but yes, I normally use the 0.4. I'm not sure about the Z axis. In S3D it was 34.06 (100%) but the elevation on the print seemed to be exaggerated. One side of the river seemed awful high to me.
