According to fashion designer Thom Browne, no one thought it was a good idea when he began his own label in 2001. But today he is one of America's most successful designers, noted for his suit pants that expose men's ankles, and for Michelle Obama's 2013 Inaugural attire. Correspondent Alina Cho visits a Thom Browne fashion show in Paris, and speaks with Vanessa Friedman, chief fashion critic of The New York Times, about why Browne gets such attention.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

Look at a suit from 2000 and compare that with one from 2010. It's not as extreme as a full TB silhouette, but suits did get significantly shorter and tighter fitting in that time. And that is largely due to Thom and more mainstream brands copying him (and mellowing out his designs to be more commercial).

fashion is great, how about a company that can make pants for under $50 for working class and middle-class people who aren't 120 lb? literally also is it hard to find actual human beings to measure actual human proportions and could close properly because we actually aren't all made like mannequins, it's 2022 and you would think that this would be available by now.

🤣 You talk about him as if he were some new, up-and-coming designer. Thom Browne has been one of the most successful and acclaimed menswear designers for over a decade. Not to mention McQueen died at 40. Thom Browne is over 55. His success has “risen and bloomed” quite alright, don’t you worry, sweetie. 😆

2 Questions: 1) Is the Met more about an art show than a fashion show? Just wondering because nothing in those clips they show look practical. 2) He and every other designer claim that the market is "dressing up". You sure about that? Everyone nowadays wears flip flops or Crocs.

As a gay man nearing forty it BLOWS MY MIND to see straight, super masculine, supposedly ideal men dressing in the same style we gay men always have but were mocked for.
@TheDeal007
@TheDeal007 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree!! I believe that since gay men don't fit into society's "standards" of masculinity, and since we often reject those ideals we gain the freedom and the courage to explore and expirement with fashion and clothes and fight against gender norms, so we are always ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, we have always been mocked by straight men due to our appearance and presentation no matter what clothes we wear, but after a while, our style of dress is adopted and entered into the mainstream years later, but by then we are on to something new and the cycle starts all over again. I wonder if there are any books, essays or research papers on this subject and its significance and influence on male fashion throughout history. I know of the flamboyant English dandies of the 18th and 19th century and the hyper-masc, uber-gay styles of the 70s and 80s (i.e. lumberjacks and leather bears), but more info on this phenomenon would be great!

You know who doesn't spend $1700 a year on clothing, the 8 million people on SSI who have already proven a medical inability to work full-time, who can't even work part-time or get married without heavy penalties, and who live on an average benefit of $300 to $500 a month. Think about that the next time you see homeless people or if you wonder why your adult disabled child can't find a place to live independently because it's not enough to pay rent on and also because people are illegally refuse to accept SSI as rent. If this angers you, write to your elected officials and write to CBS to actually make a story about this. I'm not talking about SSD I'm talking about the poorest of the poor in this country in 2002 who live on $300 to $500 a month which is significantly under the magic subsistence amount we all decided during the pandemic.

“Browne’s shrunken suit eventually caught on.” Did it? Where have you ever seen a man (not a paid celebrity) wearing one of these get-ups? “Sales at his company are up because more people are dressing up.” Are they? Get on an airplane and count how many suits you see, versus shorts and flip-flops. The trend is in casual wear, and has been for a long time. If anything, the pandemic and the rise of work-from-home has all but killed demand for formal/business attire. “He’s the first breakout menswear designer America has produced in decades.” Really? I’ve heard of Tom Ford, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs, but I never heard of Thom Browne before today. This piece needed an editor with a much more critical eye.

Your mind is small, squared. All your small mind is capable of conceiving as menswear is what your own close-minded, unmovable society taught you was acceptable for men to wear. You, and hundreds of millions of other men and women through the last 100 years have sadly been led to believe that dressing using dress-codes and design ideas from the XIXth century is the “proper” way of dressing for a “man”. It’s ludicrous and absolutely ridiculous. Just imagine women’s “quintessential garment” in the XXIst century were the dresses women were expected to wear in the XIXth…. Not to mention, of course, the irony that Thom Browne’s clothes are essentially all just re-shaped and re-proportioned traditional men’s tailored suits. But small-minded people see them and they think it’s preposterous and ridiculous. 🤦🏻‍♂️
