I needed a custom-sized playboard for a new solo miniature game (Space Station Zero), but I wanted to be able to use it for other sci-fi games. In this video, I'll show you the steps I took to design it and then cut it out and paint it.

You don't get paid, you do make a living from making videos, and you do it for the enjoyment. Don't apologize, don't quibble, just make the videos you enjoy. If someone doesn't like one, they don't have to watch. Been a few I haven't because the subject didn't interest me. But I come back and I watched this one.

Wow! You sir are a Grognard. My Dad is/was an Electronics Engineer. My Son is a Mechanical Engineer. Both have giant shops. Believe me I understand the joy you have making your own stuff for your hobby. I applaud you and your creativity. My level of crafting is cardboard and hot glue gun. I am still trying to learn how to paint miniatures and terrain to my own satisfaction. This is way beyond anything I would want to do myself, but respect to you.

Watching this makes me happy that you are using Inkscape for your designs. I have Affinity Designer, buts little to much for what I want to with my K40 ATM (plus having the time to learn it is difficult).

A lot of what we see done with laser cutters can also be done with Brother Scan-n-Cut or Cricut's. You have to use thinner plastic or vinyl for your projects, but its all the same concepts and techniques. I'm planning out a Star Wars GM screen and I'll be using a Scan-n-Cut for all the panelizing. Keep doing what you're doing, keep doing what you love. (Hater's gonna hate... )

If you want to break this down into 12"x12" tiles, you can achieve all of this on a cheap desktop diode laser or desktop CNC (if you happen to know someone or somewhere with one of those). Some 3D printer manufacturers also make diode laser kits for their machines for around $50-60 if you fancy taking that route. The only thing you'll have to consider is that if the diode laser is only 5W/500mW, then a 3-5mm board will probably take two passes to do any cutting (etching/engraving should be fine) If you don't have access to the masking tape (or don't feel like doing any 'weeding') you can also spray the whole thing a dark grey or black after the laser work, sponge on some metallic and then drybrush a few of the etched edges with some Red Ochre, for a nice worn/corroded effect.

very true! A lot of the diode lasers can easily cut through 1/8 and 1/4" wood.

I don't have a laser cutter. And currently I don't have access to one. Not even a makerspace or group locally. But, I can see a way to make this same board or at least very similar without using a laser cutter. Thank you for sharing. I dream about getting a laser cutter one day. Here's hoping they start to come down in price like 3D printers have.

This was really good, thanks. This summer my daughter took an art class at the local Community College , l gave her a ride one day and l went to the library instead of a round trip , there were a few kids that hung index cards up on the bulletin board for free Lance 3D printing, l got some barrels , crates , weapons stuff not too complicated , felt it was good to give some capital. Glad to see crafts again . Top Marks.

That's true... lots of folks hire out their machines. I don't do that, but yes, laser cutting services exist.

I've seen a few people doing tiles using a laser cutter on EVA foam. I wonder how this technique might work on that to make tiles for easy storage. I know you said foam can get chippy and such but I am thinking that is insulation foam you are referring to there.

That's a cool idea. Like the look of your board. It would be awesome to have a full MDF board. I'm making Space Station board myself but I'm using my 3D printers, resins for walls and FDM for floors. I'm going with the Boz Terrain set. Its an amazing set Scifi Terrain set, I highly recommend it.

I was just thinking if I should get a new Matt for Space Station Zero, so I don't have to tape off the edges of my 3x3. I think the answer now is... maybe?...

Terrain mat, really? Or don’t you mean terrain board? Looks pretty rigid, like a board, if you ask me.
