Designing an Autumn Studio Ghibli Film in Miniature

The most special project I have done thus far, for my best boy. Designed a Studio Ghibli film set in fall- complete with stained glass sliding doors, resin koi pond, wind chimes, and of course lots of plants. With my lovely cat as the main character because I miss him the most~
I wanted to design a Ghibli piece that took place in autumn for forever and now it's just even more special. Here's to hoping he's happy living in his dessert shop and being able to wander outside and chase whatever he pleases!

Honestly, the "My Boy" section made me cry in a video that was already making me misty-eyed. What a beautiful love letter to Mango. Also, mmmm the color grading and cinematography of your outdoor flower/garden/foliage footage is always so lovely and dreamlike.

This was so beautiful and heartfelt. Thank you for sharing this piece that you made for Mango💖 It's always hard to say goodbye to these precious innocent lives that bring us so much joy while they're here. The scene and all your ideas came together perfectly to create a very peaceful place. And that roof and sliding wall... gorgeous! I will have to remember those techniques!

This was a very touching tribute. I‘m sure Mango is happy to be remembered in this way…. I‘ve never thought of it before, but a Ghibli sweetshop back garden really sounds like a good place to call heaven.

This is a crazy beautiful piece Devon. It's so special. I lost my cat on the 11th of January and life still sucks. So I really appreciated this. I had a good cry during the Mango montage. Well done. And thank you.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry, to be honest it's just so difficult- even months later I still get choked up from missing him so much from time to time. Let's hope both our kitties are getting to live happily in their own Ghibli worlds now. Hope your heart can rest just a little easier sometime soon and sending all the love your way 💜

I am so blown away. I have a lot to say about this video. 1. Your cat was absolutely ADORABLE, I loved the montage of him, he was so loving and precious and fluffy. :( I lost my cat a few months ago and I know how it feels, it hurts so much more when it's sudden and unexpected. I'm so sorry for your loss. Cats are like more than family, it's so impossible to say goodbye to such beautiful creatures. :( Hang in there. 2. Your filming and editing skills are actually insane. Especially since the work you put into the actual art piece is so much, and then the filming of it all was even more. Seriously, the amount of work you put into this video paid off and we all see it! Way to go. 3. The details, the colors, the beauty of the diorama... it was so good. Honestly you've inspired me to actually start using the materials I bought after seeing monster mash but have been too afraid to use. You made me feel like maybe it was possible to make something beautiful even though I'm bad at sculpting haha. So thank you for that. This video was amazing, I'm so impressed. Seriously, I hope you know you're loved and appreciated. P.S.: Your singing voice is so sweet!

There's something uniquely painful about the loss of a pet that hits different than other losses, I think. Especially when it happens suddenly. This was such a beautiful, touching tribute to your cat and I'm sure he would have loved it. It looks amazing!

As someone who has adored and lived with cats for 5 decades, and is the steward of an elderly kitty, I feel your loss very keenly. This love letter to the Mango-sized hole in your heart made me weep. And the art is also really lovely. Thank you for sharing with us.

What a nice thing to honor his memory! I too would love to spend the afterlife in a Ghibli movie! And I also lost one of my dogs for lung cancer in the beginning of september. It's heartbreaking.

I've had 5 cats that have died unexpectedly in my life: 2 to pigeon keepers and 3 to cars, so I have an appreciation of what you're going through. I have 2 house cats now. Your video was a lovely tribute to a truly gorgeous cat.

I also lost my cat Whiskey to an unexpected heart issue a couple months ago, and it was incredibly traumatizing. I've been trying to come up with an idea like this to pay tribute to her. You never forget your familiar, but it helps to process everything when you can create something from the sadness.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my kitty, Gilbert in August and I'm still heartbroken. Gilbert's favorite was anything breakfast and sauce. His face was always in my spaghetti bowl lol. This is a beautiful tribute to Mango! It's gorgeous 😍 Mango is always with you. Hugs 🫂

I am sorry for your loss... while l was deployed, my black lab , chocolate , was put down because he had cancer. I mentioned it to our Chaplin , a female rabbi , as stone faced as l could, there is no crying in the Corp. Three days later we were assigned a newly deployed K-9 operator... l got a brown paperbag with the "approved" K-9 treats.... the handler... Manni... told me ... Rabbi Judy told me ... you can give him the treats ... she wanted to clear it with "us"... being able to hang with manni and Artoo... helped with coping on many levels... as usual your project is beautiful , as is your singing , l wish you sang more... the world needs art and song now more than ever. Beautiful and well executed film making all around. This is such a sweet and adorable tribute to Mango. One of my favorite quotes about death is from Ram Dass, someone asked him what death feels like and he answered, "Like taking off an old shoe." This quote gives me so much comfort. The Mod Podge texture on the stained glass looks fantastic. The little doors open!! It looks like Mango had a wonderful life with you and was well loved. I'll admit, I teared up during the beautiful tribute and then laughed when I saw the cat stroller. : ) OMG: All of the seasons are in your final shots! Not only are you a fiend, but you're a maniac too - and I mean that in the best way possible. Amazing work!

This is truly the latest response for which I apologize so much, but thank you so much all around ahh. I really do hope you're right, he always seemed like the happiest cat, so the only thing I can wish for is that he enjoyed his life as much as he seemed to. Tried to pour all the love for him into every little piece of this, so I hope it's a place he would be so happy. Thank you again~

Well I must admit for the top layer I ended up adding additional resin and diluting the color just a bit, so that helped a little! Thank you so much, appreciate all the kind words more than I can say~

So sorry for your loss of a lovely cat. I've had cats continuously in my life for over 63 years. We have 9 dogs and 3 cats and a lifetime of memories of the cats and dogs that have gone on to the next stage. Your tribute to Mango was lovely, I must admit to a tear in my eye at the end.

Thank you for sharing Mango with us, it was an honor to get to meet him and remember him with you. All your footage of him shows me that he had an amazing life full of enrichment and love. I have an elderly cat whose health is beginning to fail, and I hope he feels as loved and cared for as Mango obviously was.

Cats are my favorite animal so when it comes to the loss of one no matter whose it is, I always can't hold back my tears. When I was a kid, I use to cry when the black cat died in hocus pocus. Lol

A trick to making the doors slide easier is taking a bar of soap or wax and gently rubbing on the tracks. Use a similar color or cream colored. It turned out meowvelous! 🧡 💖🧡

My heart feels like it’s breaking at your loss of sweet Mango, while at the same time, it’s swelling with joy that Mango was able to teach you how beautiful unconditional love can feel. Pawsed the video immediately to say I'm so sorry for your loss. My cat Smudge passed away in September. Since the age of 4 there has always been a pet of some sort or another in my life, except for a few months between my dogs passing and the arrival of Smudge. I'm 62, and so not having an animal companion is weird. They are such a big part of our lives and when they leave us it is a tremendous loss. Deepest commiserations and best wishes to you.

Ahhh I am so so sorry to hear that my friend, it's so painful sometimes, even months later. Even working on this video now, many tears were shed! Through it all, I'm happy I got to make something for him in the end. Hope your heart can rest a little easier sometime soon and sending all the love to your sweet pug 💜

I lost my cat about 7 years ago, and it is still just as raw and emotional today as it was then. His 'big sister'', the Beagle passed a year ago, so this was a raw episode for me, but the fact we love them so is why it hurts so much; your film set tribute is a fitting and delightful way to honour your loss. I'll raise a glass to you and your wonderful cat, Mango. Need to get some tissues now...

It’s clear to see he has left his little pink paw prints on your heart and soul. I lost my beautiful cat Juju in November, also very suddenly. I feel his loss acutely. His brother was so desperately lonely without him that we now have another little heartbeat around the house again, who coincidentally, is the double of beautiful Mango. I adore your little clay sculpture of him and think it’s magical you have used the fur from your other kitty to add to his likeness. Mango is the genius loci of his very own Ghibli garden at the back of a dessert shop, where he can get his sugar fix whenever he pleases. And all while keeping a watchful eye over you 🍮🐈🥭🍨🧁💖

The my boy section had me bawling tbh I used to have a lovely man that looked just like your mango, and he lived far longer than me even (as in he was born far before me), and I grew up with him. He was really special and I wish I could have honored him like you honored your mango.
