Last spring my buddy and I decided we didn't know much about the requirements for a Purple Martin Birdhouse, except that there are several guidelines for both the construction and placement of the boxes. I volunteered to research the issue and build a Purple Martin House in time for the next spring breeding season. Today we go over some of those requirements and build the box.
Wherever possible the boxes are constructed for easy disassembly for repair and cleaning. Entry into the nests is accomplished by building the box in two main stackable layers. Lifting the layers apart gives access to all the nests at once. Additionally, the whole house is rigged to a 12 foot telescoping pole, designed and sold specifically for Purple Martin Houses.

How awesome that you are making houses with the size of apartments that are important for the Purple Martin survival! Their numbers are already diminishing from pesticides and mercury levels where they winter in the Amazon basin. Providing the right size housing for them is the least we can do to keep them healthy, less prone to predators, and breeding properly. Way to go! Thank you, from a serious PM landlord. 😊

The box joints and cedar oil stain you used give the whole bird house a log cabin type look which really adds a lot to to overall appearance. I like the latches and removable partitions for easy cleaning, which is something I wouldn't have thought of but makes a lot of sense. Come springtime, I'll bet there will be a lot of Purple Martins moving in to their nice new home.

A little honesty here, I wouldn't have thought of it either!! Fact is, my design is a melding of several ideas I got from the websites I read on the subject. This was really a two part problem, as I say in the intro: first, to figure out the requirements, then execute a design based on those requirements. Moreover, nothing in my build was original, except perhaps coating the roof with epoxy. However, I did go a little Rambo on some of the structure (like the box joints, which were totally unneeded). We have raised the house up now, and already some birds have shown interest. Thanks so much for the comment and the view. Hope to see you around here next week.

That’s awesome 😎 , soon as I recover from my surgery I’m going to make two!! I have like over 50 love birds 🐦. What I envisioned, and made, already is , I call it the hotel 🏨 . It was a book shelf 6’ + 4’ anyway I divided it up into little boxes with 3-4” ledge for the birds to walk on , the ledge serves as a handle so I can pull em out and clean em ,. Came out pretty cool 😎 I impressed myself! Thanks 🙏

When I saw what you were building I thought, "how can he make a whole Memphis Monday out of a Martin house?" I should have known better because there was so much to this build that I think you could have done a couple of "Memphis Minutes" to explain the steps that got left on the cutting room floor. There is some added structure to make the stacking more secure. I would have loved to see how that was done. Also, it would have been good for us novices to see a little more detail on how the dividers went together. You really put a lot into this build. It is a far cry from a frame with a bunch of gourds with holes drilled in them being used as nests. I always thought those porches were just for looks. I never realized that they were to protect the little ones from falling out of the nest. You mentioned a couple of times about the weight. Have you since thought of a way to reduce the weight and re-engineer your bird house to make it lighter? Were you able to lift it all the way up on your telescoping pole? Are you keeping this or is it going to your buddy's house? I hope you are having a great week. Turkey day is around the corner. I hope you have a big day planned.
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 6 жыл бұрын
Late again: Me not you. Anyway, the house is up, and since I was weirded out by the weight and balance problem I focused much of my thought on those issues, so everything went up fine. Several birds have already scoped it out (but the wrong birds). I know, it is becoming a problem. I leave out important stuff trying to stay under 15 minutes. Fiddling with the removeable dividers, and adding the alignment cleats ended up on the cutting room floor. I probably deleted them because I was talking too much. What I need to do is at least film that stuff, and leave the talking out. I didn't know about those porches either, and as I told On-grid, I got all my information from the many, many, many websites on how to build Purple Martin bird houses. Just had a great idea!!! Do a winter camper video in your backyard!!!! I think that I should get some credit for this great idea, don't you? Thanks again for the wonderfully thoughtful and cogent comments. You know I'm not just dusting you up, as from your comments I can tell that you really watch the whole video, which, I must say is flattering. Big project next week, I think, so hope to see you then.
@PidasianHippie
@PidasianHippie 6 жыл бұрын
I am happy to hear that raising the house went well. Hopefully the martins will win over the other birds. It is not a problem that you leave things out but it would be interesting to see how you do them. Muting the sound may be a good compromise. One of the things I like about your projects is the extensive research you put into them. You sure ended up with a nice outcome with this one. Let me just say, if I do a winter camping in my back yard video, you will get 100% of the credit! Hahahah Actually, the closer I get to the cold weather, the more I just want to hook up to it and point my truck south! There is so much information in your videos that I have to watch them in their entirety. I could miss something crucial to the build. You shouldn't be flattered by me watching your videos. I am just an old country woman from Tennessee. Hahahaha. Which reminds me of a joke a fellow told me once. He said, "My wife is so slow that it takes her 2 hours to watch 60 Minutes!". Sometimes I feel like that could be me. Hahahah Looking forward to the BIG project next week.

Hello Sir, it's an absolutely gorgeous Purple Martin House, however, unless it is able to raise and lower for nest checks and for cleaning, it is of no purpose. Also, it should be painted white to reflect heat and the entrance holes should be shaped so that Starlings cannot access the rooms, otherwise the house will become a Starling House instead of a Purple Martin House. Other than that, I must say that it's a perfectly gorgeous Birdhouse!
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 6 жыл бұрын
Frank, where were you when I needed you most. 1. Lowering for cleaning. Yes, and it has been done with the movable pole I included in the set. 2. Starlings. Yes, what do you think my buddy found in the nesting boxes when he cleaned them out. You got it, twelve starling nests. I guess I read the wrong directions, and now my buddy is paying for it. 3. White paint. Seems logical to me, and I don't remember why I made it dark. My buddy lives in the North country, so I may have reasoned that a white top with dark sides was a good compromise. In any case, the starlings seem to love it. Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I have another birdhouse video at Memphis Monday 119, and I would love to get your opinion.

Building and building correctly are two different things. As I say in the video, me and my buddy realized early on that we didn't know about the "correctly" part. I volunteered to find out what "correctly" meant, and then do the building part. However, as I remember, there wasn't a consensus on the requirements, so I chose the Web guidance that seemed the most reasonable. I can build things, but frankly, I knew nothing about Purple Martin bird houses. In the end, I got stuff right, and I got stuff wrong. But I'm not letting myself off easy here. It may all be a cop-out: I do so many different kinds of projects that I never have to claim that I'm expert in anything. Frank, I hope to see you around the channel. You seem to know your stuff, so your input is valuable to us all.

Very nice birdhouse but it seems labor intensive. I understand the strength part but why finger joints? Seems like a lot of work. Butt joints or even 45 degree angle would've been suffice with glue and screws. I noticed in one of your comments that the roof already failed. For my birdhouses (sometimes) I use roll roofing material that I cut into 2 inch strips and over lap them to make it look like roof shingles.

Very nice video as always. I read all the comments so far and can add nothing new. Just great job. I love it all. If I were to make one to sell or give away, I am too lazy to finish it with paint or stain hahaha. Plus, as you say, there is a big controversy about what kind is best for the birds as a big factor, in addition to weatherproofing. You made me laugh the other day about the "likability of the heathen" question. I am way to old, with too many sins on my own plate to even begin to judge others. Your relationship with the creator is your business, I only see my own short comings and cannot be bothered with yours. Plus, there is that ex-wife issue: she has not covered and hidden how I lived my life and mistreated hre. hahaha I stopped drinking the Cool-aid too late. She had already remarried. The point is, I do not have a unblemished history and even today, I am not what you would call "pure as the driven snow." Thanks again for reading and interacting with me on facebook. Most of my friends will not touch my FB story with a 10 ft pole. (I don't blame them)
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 6 жыл бұрын
It is hard to touch your FB story with a 10 foot pole in the US, or Saudi Arabia, or Iran, Samilia. But in Sweden, well there they wouldn't care less. The point is, nobody is unblemished, as the Bible says. However, a second grader could justify any sin you can think of with Biblical references. That's the problem with "fundamentalism" of any flavor: do anything you want, then justify it with your reading of whatever Holy Book you grew up with. I didn't grow up with a holy book (never attended church at all until I was nearly 30 years old), so I'm quite ignorant of the complexities of religion. Families break up without koolaid, however, I just checked and the rate is a little lower for the "nones." All this is way to serious for a 70 year old geezer like me. Let's talk about why I never make "raised panel doors," or why white oak is better than read oak, or when I'm getting my boat working again. Frankly, and you have heard me talk, I'm not smart enough to talk about anything else. Thanks for the comment and the view. Hope my totally uninformed views on religion didn't kill our friendship. If so, then I retract everything I said.
@ohhiguy

In your video above, there is a shadow box on your wall of your shop. It has your name tag and your rank. I was assigned to the USS Leader in the Reserves. Not sure if you were assigned to her or the Exultant during the Persian Gulf war, time frame. I had to go to Charleston Naval Base, for my annual training one year. I don't think we ever met though. Sorry if I freaked you out, I just pay very close attention to detail, as I was taught in boot camp. Orlando, 1987.
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 6 жыл бұрын
Wasn't freaked out as happy to find a shipmate. As we get older, we start to appreciate all that stuff they tried to drill into us as young guys. Especially, "Attention to detail." Did you ever notice that it takes about one second to positively identify a target as a real Navy guy, and less than a second to ID a faker? I remember a guy we met who was impressing everyone with his adventurous stories as a Navy SEAL. I told my wife as we were leaving, "He was never in the Navy." "How do you know," she replied, as he surely looked the part. "I said the word 'skuttlebutt'," I replied. "And he didn't know what I meant." I guess I'm not normal on this, but I'm actually flattered when someone fakes being in the service (unless they pretend to be a hero.) I always test them with "Bug Juice," or "Relative Bearing Grease,", or Mail Buoy." Of course, BZ is also a perfect example. Did you stay in the Navy and retire? Personally, I was in the Army as a kid, but became so homesick for the service after discharge and college that joined the Navy at age 32 (about the age limit.)

If you're doing this for making a profit, you use fence boards and no dados (finishing nails), making it easy to clean and get the sparrows (or pigeons) would be the added hardware. Some kind of low cost way to put it in a large tree or on a building for $30 or so would sell well.

@@MemphisApplegateHi! I’m a huge birder and also love woodworking. If you can extend the hole downward a little bit, you can buy predator guards to make them semi-circles (SREH). Also, I’m not a Martin expert, so I’d research a bit more, but you can also put out decoys and play their songs to attract them.
