DESIGNING and TESTING a CUSTOM WING - Modifying My Exige - Hell Slow Project Part 4

This is Part 4 of the series and I'm now cutting things up and working out if the new wing design will work. This is one of my favourite additions to the car, it'll likely divide opinions as it's quite extreme, but I think it'll be amazing!
In the next episode we'll be getting the car ready to take it to the paint shop, and hopefully some of the new parts start arriving!

Have you been to a wind tunnel and is the wing angel adjustable?

Not been to a wind tunnel (nor will I), but the wing profile comes with CFD data. Both height and angle are adjustable.

Will you put a rubber grommet seal on the bodywork slot - would stop any lateral movement if the uprights chipping the paint and water proof the area ?

That’s the plan, just a rubber trim around it. It will have an added brace to stop sideways movement inside the boot.

I would love to write „can‘t wait for the car to be finished“ But let‘s ne honest: Will it ever be finished? 😅 Love the car and the content 💪🏻

Great project, very brave! How are you going to finish the slots in the clam? There must be some kind of seal? Also I cannot find any figures for the Cup R, but the current Cup 430 is supposed to be 220kg of downforce at 180mph, so you must be aiming for 200-250? I wonder how much benefit mounting to the chassis actually makes in terms of kg? That would be interesting to know. It would be significant I would have thought.

I believe that figure for the 430 Cup is the total downforce for both front and rear, so not just for the rear wing. I'll do a rubber deal around the slots to seal them and protect the paint. I don't know the figures lost in it being clam mounted, but it's obviously better to be solidly mounted to the chassis. Unfortunately it's very hard to get any exact figures without a full CFD model, or going to a wind tunnel, both of which are a bit too costly for me really!

@@GFWilliamsnet Yes sorry, those figures are supposedly total. But you must be hoping to at least match the 430? That doesn't appear to have much going on at the front, just the deeper front lip and vented arches that i can see. So you should be able to beat the factory figures comfortably? GL anyway and looking forward to the next update.

@@samueldowney2806 I have a new front splitter with underbody diffuser tunnels, wheel arch vents (but actually properly open unlike 430 Cup) and vents behind the front wheels. I'll have comfortably more downforce than a 430 Cup. The real question is how much more drag...

1150kg and 460hp vs Emira with 1400kg (or more) and 400hp. I’ll keep my Exige!

@@GFWilliamsnet yea but Emira looks and interior. It’s not all about performance ;) your car is amazing though, keep up the awesome work. I’m looking forward to my first lotus!

@@Milkman69ner I’m not sure it’s an upgrade in looks either from my car. The only thing I’d really be upgrading would be the headlights and how easy it is to physically get into the car…

Wing mounts from cup car look very flimsy for 150kg of downforce + drag and thousands of pendulum movements. At minimum I would add second pair opposing current and sandwich the upper mounts between them

Actually not a bad idea, I was thinking of remaking them from a solid block of aluminium. These will do for now though (budget is the limiting factor for now!). Can’t sandwich them very easily due to other mounting parts.

My concern is that the wing support uprights will flex left, right & forward & aft as g forces are exerted upon it & will chaff on the raw edge of the slotted holes. Each to their own, but I really don’t like any wings or splitters - I think they look juvenile & shout boy racer. Best of luck with the project...

There will be a diagonal cross brace in the boot between the two uprights, plus the edges of the slots will have a rubber edge strip around them. In terms of looking like a boy racer, I think I can live with that, can’t please everyone all the time :)
