Love to see it. Drought-proofing your land is just smart preparation even if you've historically had evenly distributed precipitation. Permaculture design is best placed to adapt to changing patterns.

Pretty good idea on that A-frame, especially in bright daylight outdoors! I've got a laser level, and it works great, except trying to see the mark in the daylight outdoors can be tough. I usually wind up doing all of my ground-work laser marking about dusk.
@EricSeider
@EricSeider Жыл бұрын
The laser level for surveying is different. There’s a 360 degree rotating transmitter and receiver that beeps so you are not relying on actually seeing the laser beam. They are great for covering large areas quickly with one person, but they are not great for going through trees or tall brush as they need line of sight.

Was just walking my property after removing broken branches from pear trees and noticed my pond is looking a little low. This property is almost flat except right by by the house, but a swale to also direct water around the house and to the pond might really work well. Of course that is also where the power and phone lines run underground

Almost have my neighbor talked into letting me borrow his tractor for a day. I’m hoping that I can dig a couple swales and enlarge the tiny pond at the high point of my little property. Idk whether a tractor with a loader will be able to do the job, but maybe. (Kubota 4WD, around 40 hp I think) I’ll also clear an eyesore junk pile, move wood chips where needed and give a bunch of wood chips to him for use of his tractor. First, I need to make an A-frame like that to mark it out. Praying that it works as planned, God willing.

This is for those who feel very intimidated by the idea of putting in swales or etc. anytime soon, or for whatever other reason don't think they'll be able to, but really need the improvement of drought-proofing their property. Not to say that some sort of additional rain catchment, like a pond or container isn't still advised if one can at least do that, and like in Jason's case, may be wanted to help water livestock, but as far as the soil goes, I want to offer this encouragement. Go watch Alan Savory's presentations on holistically planned grazing and what it can do for ( healthy) water retention and top soil growth. I know Joel Salatin practices this approach to rotational grazing, and I think Geoff Lawton does as well ( William ..?? ). Richard Perkins covers it some in his earlier Ridgedale permaculture vlogs and in some, he speaks about how yes, his farm benefitted from using the key-line plow ( a special type of subsoiler, a field-sized broadfork type way to avoid normal plowing and tillage but, with this particular type, shatter the compacted subsoil, any plow-pan), but that he's seen it where someone hasn't used one, and sometimes nearly as quickly, just using the grazing cattle alone, it was improving nicely. (The soil life gradually de-compacts it I think is how it goes). Anyways, this ever more healthy soil holds more water, even springs appear, yet also soaks it up, and down, etc., doesn't get water-logged issues so easily. Also grows healthier, denser stands of grasses etc. which not only then produce more per acre from that, but grow lusher, earlier & later in the season, more in less-ideal weather, etc. , than it used to or the neighbor's does. Joel Salatin writes of this in "Salad bar Beef", I think it was. So, for anyone like me who just doesn't have the brain power or energy or $ to deal with swales - without creating a worse issue ! - (anytime soon after getting our own property again I hope next year), this I hope gives you some other ways to start addressing water issues in your soil and helping your property be more resilient. Most OG, No-till gardening methods do the same thing in your gardens. As I'm sure Billy has referred to in various ways at times, maye all the above, IDK, I haven't watched all of his videos (yet ! ). Super thankful for all y'all wonderful homesteading vloggers !

I don't even remember the last time we had a good rain! Maybe last April? Temps are now in the teens at night, highs in the 40's during the day - still no precip, rain OR snow. I had scheduled a pig-processing day at a farm about 20 miles from me - the day before it was scheduled, her husband was gored by the big male, had to go to the hospital for a huge gash high on his thigh . . . needless to say, the workshop was postponed - permanently, I'm afraid, as the big boar was slaughtered and processed that night.
