This gives me the energy I need to finish that last fourth sidekick character for the challenge, you can always count on Hardy to inspire! Awesome work by the way that little guy is such a cutie :) On a side note, thank you very much for including my portfolio for the live review the other day, that gave me a lot of insights on how to make it more accessible! -Lukas.

Finding this channel few days ago is a live changer! I'm an illustrator for RPG books but for a last year or so I was stuck in this impostor syndrom loop, and your tutorials, your mindset about creating and thinking about art in general helped me so much! Now I just want to sit and draw, try new things without worying that I'm not good enough. Thank you Hardy so much

I adore how passionate and knowledgeable you are in your field of expertise, and it's very inspiring. I recently graduated with a degree in animation & illustration (it was all they had) and had to do lots of cartoony, animation pipeline work, when I went I hoped to expand more on art for games. I'm only now coming out of my art identity crisis, and seeing your videos really made me want to continue pursuing concept art. Although I did cartoony work, I still learned a lot about the pipeline, which I can now apply to a more illustrative concept work! So happy I found you on Udemy, too. Never took online courses, but you have an amazing attitude and energy, and I hope to learn more from you. ☺

Such a great idea. I'm usually slapping these together kind of hastily but that is definitely a better way to make sure things stay crisp. Thanks!

Hey Hardy Fowler, your stuff has truly been inspiring for me as a concept artist. I love how much story you can depict from characters if you do a good job and having a good story set up can give some interesting characteristics to each. If you don’t mind me asking, I’d love to know if you can share your brushes? I know they don’t make the artist, but I’ve been dabbling with silhouettes more because of you and I just love how yours seem to work.

That's so awesome. Thanks for letting me know. Sure, I'm happy to share these brushes. If you are on discord, just reach out to me there and I can share them with you. Or just try our office email at digitalpaintingstudio.com and we'll get back to you.

Thanks so much, Hardy, I've really been enjoying your content! I stared taking a few of your Skillshare courses after discovering you here and KZfaq, and I just wanted to make sure - are all brushes that you provide free for comercial use? Maybe that's an obvious question but I just wanted to make sure! Thanks again!

Hello Hardy, I was struggling to make a powerful folio piece cause I've been doing mostly illustration works. Also the up-to-date game assets I've done are still on the NDA so I can't really put them on my folio. Then I came across your videos and I wanted to thank you for inspiring me more to design I may not be as quick as your pace (Since I've just finished my first character) but it certainly pushing me to think creatively, sketch, and paint more. Reimagining and recreating my old OC Squad which I've sketched in 2011 (complete with backstories) is quite fun and worthwhile experience. I am still struggling but I am learning exponentially. Really happy with the results so far and can't wait to share it to add it on my folio. Also, do you have like a specific hashtag which I could use in social media to show my "participation" ? :)
@fowlerillus

I know just what you mean. NDAs can really keep the portfolio hard to build. I'm so glad that this series was inspiring. Exactly what I had hoped. I can't wait to see what you're working on for the challenge. You are welcome in the DPS discord or you can tag my instagram @hardy_digitalpaintingstudio Thanks for the message!

Hey Hardy, Does DPS teach a beginner everything they need to know to get to digital painting / concerting or do we need to already have (to some standard) people drawing skills etc?

Hi Bradley - I like to think we have something for everyone. There is a free starter kit that goes through very basic digital painting operations (art fundamentals and photoshop fundamentals. There are courses on Painting Faces and Painting Figures in the Skillbuilder section too. Those are part of a monthly subscription but there is a free 7 day trial if you want to check it out. Let me know if you have any questions!

Im going through a very stressful part of my art journey I have been learning to draw character design from more a year and when ever i try to make something good i get stuck at a part For example i used to get stuck because of lack of ideas and skills to sketch put my ideas but now i have the skill to draw sketches. But when it comes to coloring. I managed to color some parts but stuck at other parts. There is something i always get stuck at and end up leaving my work in between. I dont even have a single work to show in my portfolio in such a long time. Its very frustrating and depressing me. Making me feel like a failure what should i do?
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that you are feeling stressed. That is the worst and I feel that myself sometimes too. I think it's just a lifelong journey of facing one challenge at a time and then moving onto the next challenge. When I feel stuck (and this is what I recommend), I try to paint something fairly easy or something that comes naturally to me - give myself an easy win. Something that I can be proud of. It sort of relights the spark that makes me feel inspired and ambitious again and in the mood to tackle challenges. I hope that helps - I wish you well!

Why do you flip the canvas so often while sketching? Does this have something to do with sloped lines and your dominant hand? Perhaps with shape of your brush?
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus Жыл бұрын
I love doing that. It is partially as you described - sometimes, it's just easier to make brush strokes in certain angles. But my favorite part is that it makes the image seem fresh to your eye. If there are any problems or any weirdness that you can't quite put a finger on, flipping the canvas usually makes it jump out at you.

How do you feel about the ethical side of teaching art (and charging money for it) to people when its a career that's not going to be viable soon thanks to the AI technology?
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I definitely see your point, but I think the future is far from certain with anything related to AI. It’s probably going to be a weird five years up ahead for humanity. But I think this craft will always have value. I’m definitely not ready to surrender the stylus and I wouldn’t tell anyone wanting to learn to do so either.
