The new Netflix adaptation of the Sandman comics has got us all thinking about the Endless family. All the characters are very relatable because they are personifications of concepts and ideas that are linked to life. One such member of the Endless family, whom we meet very briefly in the series, is Despair. When you look at her, you cannot help but feel gloomy, because she is the anthropomorphic embodiment of the emotions of despair, misery, and sorrow.

It should be noted that officially both Dispair and Desire are not villains. Both are essential for human existence. Desire represents wanting something and it's opposite generosity. Despair represents sorrow and self destruction, but also self sacrifice and melancholy (not nessisary joy...that was Delight's thing before she became the personification of insanity).

Isn’t Despair also the embodiment of Hope? We see that she was directly involved in the rise and fall of Krypton, sparing one baby; that baby would then grow up to become Superman, a hero who not only become the hope of Earth, but also much of the multiverse. The same goes for figures such as Batman, Spider-Man, The Doctor, Raoul Wallenberg, Madoka, Simon the Digger and countless other figures. Those who knew great loss, yet managed to rise above it and turned such feelings into a resolve to help others. Despair is Pandora’s Box. Both the horrors and hope.

@@Living_Life242 True. The Endless are supposed to be double personifications. Both what their names means and the complete opposite of what their names means. Destiny is both Fate and Free Will. Death is both Death and Life. Dream is both Fantasy and Reality. Destruction is both Destruction and Creation. Despair is both Sadness/Depression and Hope. Desire is both Want and Generosity. Delirium is both Insanity and Sanity. Her past self, Delite, was both Joy and Sadness , which kinda overlapped with Dispair, which might explain the slow change over the eons.

The question then is, what influence did Dreams imprisonment have on the rise of costumed heroes?

I kinda wish they'd pushed it further with her though. Like an ordinary girl who is overweight with unwashed hair is suddenly just despair? I didn't care for it. I also really wanted the twins, desire and despair, to look a little more like twins. Like she would have similar costuming maybe to him, hers would look dark, depraved, and painful maybe. I dunno, I wanted something a little different.

Since for years, even Gaiman claimed that there was no way there could be a decent film adaption of the series, I, as a long time fan and someone who really doesn't care for re-makes, re-imaginings, etc, I think they did a pretty good job of creating the Endless and the story was interesting. Yeah, I know, OMG! Death was .... black! So what? The acting was good, the story was interesting and I'll keep watching.

I haven't seen too many people complain about that. They are omnipotent beings so they can look like anything. None of the Endless really look like they look in the source material. Some folks just have their own internal issues with black people and having to constantly watch a black person puts them off which is why they complain about skin color.

Okay, but why can't death be an asian, latina, middle eastern, or whatever else? They don't always have to just cast a black person so people don't get upset, but it's still a good show though they do change alot of details. And if i remember correctly, the sorcerer's son who was given eternal sleep by Morpheus in the series seemed more like he had the punishment of eternal waking in the comic. It's where he keeps waking from a nightmare only to find out he's still dreaming, then awakens from that dream and then realizes again that he's still in the nightmare, over and over again forever. I wish they would have touched on that detail because that was pretty trippy, but maybe they will later.

That has never been true. Delight turned into Delirium when Dream first met Alianora, after Desire sent her to help him. No mention of Destruction leaving was at this time.

Seems like the twins Desire and Despair take forms intended to invoke the very concepts they enbody. Desire is suggestive and a bit fantastical with succubus-like traits. Despair looks like a person who's given up on themeselves, (more so in comics then show) dissatisfied about thier own body so they barely try to look decect, she also assumed failure based on past shortcomings, and all-round pity-able you kinda want to feel bad for them....untill you see the sadistic self-mutilation.

@@lili9000c They're trying to show 'a depressed woman' - someone average, who is likely to be confined to her home, and does not bother with grooming. Either they confused Despair with 'Depression', or that's the aimed Show change. I feel that what they don't quite get is Gaiman's _'representation of a feeling when you see something unsettling and yet quite familiar in the dark corners of your mind'._

I don’t think it was meant to fat shame per say more like how we perceive ourselves when we are in that mindset and how society sadly perceives it negatively I think as someone with weight problems due to my depression and hormonal imbalance it resonated with me I think made her a lot more attractive in the adaptation so it wouldn’t make more heavyset people feel bad she looks more human like someone who is just down on her luck and just happens to be bigger someone that we pass on the street. But I can totally understand why you would feel that way although I do find the actress playing her very attractive if that’s any consultation.

I’m not sure if you know this but she that’s Despair also makes an appearance in a different Netflix series “Dead boy detective Agency” it had little to do with the Sand man series at least at this point, but it might figure in later on after Season 2 or 3 kicks off.

I can't wait to see Despair's realm reimagined. Keep the mirrors fog and rats, but modernize it so where it resembles a derelict trap house in the middle of the ghetto. Dream's opposite is the Waking, not nightmare. Nightmares are just scary dreams. Also yes, Despair represents Hope. What the endless seems to be the opposite of are foundational aspects of reality. They are the void or lack of their opposite. So if a sentient being isn't awake, he is asleep and possibly dreaming If something is not alive it is dead. If something is created, it will eventually be destroyed. If a being has hope, when it runs out, it leads to despair It is the same relationship Shadows have with Light. or Up with down, left with right. They are not mere opposites but a part of a system, but they are dependent on their opposite rather than the other way around. This is why Delight ended up becoming Delerium. Destiny however is the opposite of Choice. His presence represents a huge issue for sentient beings who think they have free-will.

@@marklance5921 No, that's the Inside Out movie, much simplified. The Endless are more abstract, more encompassing. Disgust, or hate, are simply mechanisms like pain. Desire of the Endless is both a need, and a want (Desire has two shadows). Desire is a Lack, and therefore the opposite is likely Fulfillment.

I don't know why they have missed the opportunity to give us the confident, sexy, crazy, unimpressed and even sometimes scary version of despair? This could have been huge! Also pretty awesome to watch finally an obese character on television who isn't either the shy, sad side peace or the joke of the show. Despair is one of the most powerful personifications who is even more powerful than Lucifer itself. She is a queen. But no we have not only gotten a dressed Despair, no we had to watch her become an unimportant shadow. The show is FSK18 for heavens sake. Also wasn't Dream almost the whole first episode naked? Therefore nudity shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore Preston can really look super creepy and scary. Why didn't they use her gift. Wasn't the sandman creator part of this production? But noo.. they did everything to give Despair a traumatized, inconspicuous appearance. They changed her whole being. Why did he let this happen?! Next season I want a nude, scarred, mischievous, manipulative personification of Despair with way more scenes.

What I want to say is she was my favorite of all the endless in the comics but now she's not even relevant enough to get more than one scene. Where it looks like we have to pity her. In the comics she's the complete opposite. She is confident and doesn't give shit about what others might think of her. Despair is the reason why we become our own bully. She manipulates us with everything we're insecure about. She is definitely not the one who gets constantly manipulated by her twin- desire. She's the one who tells us what we should desire. Desire isn't the one who tells us what we should feel insecure about.

Why though? She was designed with despair and suffering at the forefront, and ended up with an artful, intimate, and deeply human design. Had they made her a caricature of women, and prioritized elements like: sex appeal, fragility, superficial beauty ect, THEN I can see women getting pissed. Like a little petite sexy whiny goth girl, who's design has as much substance as a Bubly has flavor? Yeah that'd piss me off. I love her design in the comics and the show. It's striking, human, intimate, and shows despair in its rawest form.

Ah yes, Despair, the embodiment of Body Shaming. You do realize that there are "Beautiful" people who are profoundly unhappy as well. "Thin" and "Beautiful" do NOT automatically equate with happiness. She could be a he, S/He could be any size, any shape, any ethnicity, any age, but No, The writers/creators went with "Ugly outside has to mean ugly inside". That was the simplistic view of 19th century authors like Mary Shelly, and Robert Louis Stevenson [Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll for those of you with a less literary bent of mind. Never liked how this character equates emotional un-fulfilment with physical un-attractiveness. So superficial. So many hidden messages in the art. "All is not gold that glitters, all is not pure that shines". Despair could be beautiful, It's so EASY to fall into despair, why is she not portrayed as seductive instead? Wallowing in despair could be portrayed as an almost erotic sensation. When you fall into despair, it effects everything you do, so why isn't she portrayed as dominant or controlling? There are SO many ways to portray despair, but they went for "Fat" "Female" and "Ugly". Hellooooo Anorexia.
