When the key won't turn in the ignition or turns more heavily, it's time to react.
This problem is both annoying and dangerous as it can leave you stranded (you won't be able to start the car).
This is one more repair that you can do on your own, with things found around the household.
All you'll need is some WD-40 spray or an oil can filled with engine oil.
So, before visiting a mechanic or starting to pick apart the lock, take a look at the video tutorial and give it a try.

I was a skeptic at first but sure enough this actually got my neighbors truck to turn over. I was sitting there for over half an hour trying to get it to turnover before seeing this technique. It may not work for everyone, but it worked on a 2001 F150.

After watching several other videos with possible fixes for this situation, stranded by the way, this worked. I didn’t have any WD-40 or other spray type lubricant but I did have a partial bottle of lawnmower engine oil in the back. I opened it up got a little on my finger, lubed the key with it and have it a try. Didn’t work, shit! In my mind I’m saying to myself this isn’t gonna work either! The man said try it 2 or 3 times. I hit a little more oil on my finger and lived the key again. Here goes nothin! Gave it a turn and the key moved like nothing was wrong. Thanks a million my friend. I’m gonna go raise a cold one to you.

Do not use standard WD-40! Standard WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant and will, in fact, remove any type of lubricant that is in the cylinder. Use a lubricant that has a silicone, graphite or Teflon base only. Something that will dry fast and won't turn the inside of your cylinder into a dirt magnet. WD-40 makes a dirt and dust resistant dry lube version that is specifically made for lock cylinders. Engine oil is probably something else you don't want to put inside your lock cylinder. Dirt and dust particles stick to engine oil like glue.

@@PG_FISHINGspray the lock out with electronic connection cleaner, or something else that won't leave a oily residue, let it dry, then lube it with graphite.

@@michen25 you can do what @wanagerscott wrote above. The electronics cleaner spray will remove the residues of the wd40, use it abundantly. Let it dry a few hours then apply a suitable lubricant

Thank you very much! This repair worked perfect. I tried everything I could and was about to get it towed to a garage and it would have cost me a lot of money of which my wife and I do not have. We were being told to tear it apart and all kinds of other things. It was so easy. Thank you again. Hey I just tried what you said about putting the motor oil on the key because I had no wd40. I got the oil from up under my hood, one of the oils there and wet a piece of paper towel. I had been having trouble 2 days with the ignition not cutting off completely and I was feeling terrible knowing it was gonna cost me a small fortune to fix. I did what you said (lubricated the inside of the lock as well) and it worked!!! I just wanted to say thank you so very much! You have saved me sooooo much money!!

Thanks dude! Saved me. The ignition switch started being really stiff a few days ago from now being so hard to turn, like even past the ACC part. I put a little bit of engine oil that I had since I had no WD40 or silicone spray/graphene, on paper and smeared it on the key and after a few wiggles and turns it finally loosened and is now smooth as butter!

Thank you thank you thank you! I was stuck at work and had to get my kid from daycare. I got the plastic off and was able to remove the ignition switch from the cylinder. I was able to turn the key enough to unlock the steering wheel and started the car with a screwdriver in the ignition switch! Life saver!

Bruh thank god ❤️‍🔥😇 you are literally god for me rn. My mom’s car didnt turned on while I was doing some random stuff to the car in a parking lot. Mom wasn’t nearby and I was really worried. I did every possible thing and then just googled after few hours of 😞 failure. And just found this video and within few minutes I’m driving happy and safe to home.😅 Btw in my case my all my brakes, steering wheel and the ignition was locked and I low-key freaked out so I tried steering my wheel left and right and at the same time I turned the ignition on and it worked thankfully 😅

Hi, thanks for watching, and glad that the video helped! If the inner components of the lock are not damaged, then you've probably solved the problem for a longer period of time. Just pay attention from time to time is it working properly. If it starts to get stuck despite the fact that you've cleaned and lubricated it, then change the lock ASAP. Thank you, my ignition has been giving me hell, not wanting to turn all the way off, when I power the vehicle down. It's so stressful! It's getting worse everyday and I cannot afford parts, much less to hire a mechanic (I just don't have anyone I trust at all to work on my car, I've been screwed every damn time) I had been fighting with it for several hours this morning, and finally when I messed with the wheel while turning it off, it FINALLY turned all the way off!! Oh, thank you for this video!!!! I went out to the truck this morning and took a socket (was not about to take the plastic off around the ignition) and held it over the ignition and tapped it with a rubber mallet like 3 time and it started right up.

I had the same problem with my 97 Mustang. It was simply a matter of the original key being ‘worn out’ preventing it from engaging the ignition lock. As a member of AAA, I simply contacted an Auto Locksmith affiliated with AAA, had them make a couple of new keys (no charge) and problem solved. Key turned smooth as butter and use of oil was not necessary

I've been having problems with my key turning for a year. Wheel wasn't locked and still wouldn't turn. I have blisters on my blisters. I put WD-40 on the key and it worked!!! Yay Thank you!!!

Thank you!! I watched another video that said to tap on the key with a rubber mallet. I did that a few times and it still was not working well. Then I came back and looked again and found your video, Of course try some lubrication first! That helped but not enough. Got my spare key which is still brand new (2002 Liberty) and it worked just fine - like brand new! My original key was worn out. Got two new keys made for $5 and all is well.

Dude, you just saved us a tow bill!!! Sprayed some wd-40 in there and put the hey in and wiggled around. Pulled out key and there was a lot of gunk on it. Worked with it a few minutes and BOOM, we are running!!! Thank you so much!!!

Just finished installing my radiator for the first time in my life and I finally finished installing it just for my key not to turn. Seeing this video definitely f****** helped immensely I thought I broke my car
