If I was an alien and had access to the internet, human pop culture and history, i'd do things like that just for fun to fuck with people. Like, even if I was a scientist on a mission to study earthlings or talk to world leaders in secret. I'm sure some of them have to have a sense of humor.

I liked Signs. Yeah its a little dry, but it kinda builds a lot of suspense because they live in the country-side, so of course they wouldn't see a lot of action like in a major city. But its eerie how they see the News and the UFOS are over cities. And when the little Mexican kid has a party and an Alien walks by scaring the shit out of the son whos watching the TV. they get subtle hints through the movie that they dont like water. And it just so happens how the little girl left all the half empty glasses of water around. And then the son gets the bat and wrecks the alien's shit up.

As a kid, I had either the option to get the destroy all humans or the wall-e for playstation 2 game, I both regret but didn't regret, wall-e was very entertaining and I constantly kept replaying it.
