Bad singing habits to AVOID! Looking for singing tips on how to sing? You’ve heard it said that your body is a temple…well in the case of the singer that old saying translates into, “Your instrument is a temple!” If you don’t look after your voice it simply won’t perform at its optimum.

1:06 Eat, Drink and be Merry
If you’re looking to improve your voice then the first thing you need to do is treat your body the same way a professional athlete treat’s theirs. You are a vocal athlete! This means that everything you do will have an impact on your voice.
2:01 Choose the Wrong Singing Teacher
Every professional athlete has a coach someone to observe, instruct and correct. Singers are no different. We need someone who can watch, listen and provide feedback for the refinement of our voice. This being said, it’s really important that you choose the right singing teacher for you.
3:14 Sing when you are Sick
Singing while you’re sick is simply not worth the risk to your vocal health. Please heed this warning: you can do significant damage to your voice during one set of songs - especially if the health of the voice is already compromised due to general illness.
4:26 Deny you have a vocal problem
Raspiness, inconsistent tone, an inability to maintain pitch, and reduced vocal stamina are all signs that your voice has been compromised. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your voice has sustained damage of a pathological nature. Sure, you might have nodules, a vocal fold cyst or a contact granuloma, but it could equally be a functional issue requiring simple instruction on how to operate your voice more efficiently.
5:29 Don't look after your Ears
We spend a lot of time as singers worrying about the health of our larynx. We should pay equal attention to the health of our ears. Let’s face it, if you can’t hear well your singing is going to become a darn sight harder.
6:42 Habitually Clear Your Throat
When you get into the poor habit of slamming your vocal folds together every few minutes the vocal folds respond by swelling in order to cushion and protect themselves from the repetitive impact. You already know that swollen vocal folds is not a good thing and adds to general wear and tear of the voice. If you want to look after your voice…stop all that throat clearing and replace it with a simple swallow instead.

I started wearing ear plugs to the bar religiously by age 23, but it doesn't take a lot to damage the ears. I hope it wasn't too late to start wearing ear plugs after 3 years. @Alessandra keith Miguel It can depend to … Where always able to hit high notes or was this only when you were a child ? ( usually a lot of children who are Tenors / Sopranos usually have a lower voice when the voice is trying to mature )
@rashelreyes1880
@rashelreyes1880 3 жыл бұрын
@Alessandra keith Miguel Oh yeah definitely I don’t think you ruined your voice it’s possible that when you were a child you had a higher voice so high notes were much easier than lower notes but as you get older your voice tends to become deeper . Especially, if you are a male it’s known that when you are a tenor( highest voice for a male ) as a child you usually become a baritone ( the voice in the middle for the male ) or a Bass ( the lowest voice for a male ) and if you are a bass or baritone as a child you usually become a tenor as your voice matures so , really it’s nothing worry about it’s just how your voice is just make sure to not force your voice too much

I love how you completely put emphasis on how rock should not be learned from classical techniques. I know heaps of people who keep denying this and actually went off for classical lessons, spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars and not being able to directly apply it to their genre. Sadly, they got issues with their throat and terrible tension in their larynx because of it. People think that contemporary voice lessons won't give them the desired range, power and endurance with their voice and sadly, that is not the truth.

Hey Doc, I'm 17 and I've had a mildly "croaky" voice from the time I was 13 and began to experience pitch drop from puberty. I can hit very low notes now, but it isn't my preferred octave and I've essentially exhausted my voice into speaking and singing higher to accommodate those who couldn't hear me as easily or weren't impressed with my low notes. I'm interested in pursuing a singing career but I'm not sure whether I've had nodes for a long time without realizing it or whether this "croakiness" can simply be described as a unique quality of my voice. Lots of vibrato, if I sing a low note loudly people can feel the vibrations, but I'm unsure of whether I'm just singing incorrectly because I don't know about how I'm supposed to be singing for my voice. My question to you is, do you think my voice could be like this without nodes? If I'm singing incorrectly, is there any way to achieve higher notes or octaves without damaging my voice? Thanks, Doc.

Thanks for the tip on IEMs. While my professional career has self-destructed because of severe tinnitus, which has ruined my voice, I wonder if I can reclaim my old strong voice and ever be able to teach again in a large classroom. I don't have a singing voice, but I do have a melodic voice when I speak, but it's worthless if I can't project. I'll look into IEMs and see if these can't help me get my teaching voice back. I wish I'd worn more protection when I worked on the B-52s (the aircraft, not the band). Dr. Bob (Prof. Bob)

Choosing the right vocal coach is huge. I've had three. Two were practically useless, and one was a genius. If you aren't noticeably better after four lessons or one month (at least, as a beginner, which is what I was with all three teachers), you should immediately find another teacher. Just my two cents. In case anyone is curious, one of the things that distinguished the genius is that she was acutely aware of the effect of the ENTIRE BODY on the voice, not just the throat, mouth cavity, lungs, etc., like many teachers seem to be.

I have no vocal issues for the moment, but I'm worried my routines might have an impact in the future. See, I do vocal exercises at least 5 days in a week, and after like 30 minutes my vocal folds tend to swell up (making a "gurgly" sound). Of course singing at that point will hurt my voice, so I take a break doing some cord thinning exercises and eventually my voice sounds fine again. Now my concern is: will continuing singing at this point (although my voice do sound godd at the moment) hurt my voice anyway? Should I just stop singing for the rest of the day?

Yikeeee my school has been performing several showings of Xanadu, and I sing pretty much every song, loudly, as I'm in the Ensemble. I got sick during the week, still decided to sing today for a showing... And then screamed songs a lot afterwards for a party... Aaand now I can barely speak without it hurting. Three showings left too. RIP.

Hi NotorietyOB - I have found that recording in a studio is very different than just doing it at home. Like you, I felt I was doing okay.....but in the studio, listening to the playback, I sounded like I had no energy! Yes, a good mic is important, and of course a good engineer.....but studio recording requires really pulling your voice out, being in 'the flow' and as Dr. Dan suggests, taking care of your voice. Milk will cause mucus, peppermint tea is not good, not good to drink alcohol. There is another vocal coach on KZfaq that I think is really good, Eric Arcenaux. I've had 5 singing teachers, in NYC and LA and Eric knows his stuff. Good luck!

Oh! A lot of veteran musicians I know do that one in ear thing and one without because they say it keeps them connected to the crowd. I also figured since in recording it works to use only one ear for the monitor and one ear free, that in ears work the same. But this is very interesting info.

3:15 I know this video was in 2014 but I found the need to tell my experience on this. At first, I didn't care about this part, I got a really bad sore throat and I had a performance in a week. So I tried to protect it and after a little while, it felt better so I thought there won't be a problem. I practiced before the performance time and everything was going great! Except when I went stage I couldn't even talk! And it felt terrible cause everybody performed their song and I was on the stage, I couldn't make just a little sound. Be careful with your voice guys, especially when you're sick.

What Dr. Dan said about singing when your sick is true, but he took it to the extreme. A lot of the time you do the best singing when your sick, just don't over do it. Your not going to kill your voice if you sing when your sick. Keep it nice and easy.

Really great tips Dan! Thank you so much for this video and I can say from my own experience that smoking is never great for the bodies' ability to respire as efficiently as what it is when placed under a smoke-free workout routine that replaces nicotine addiction with mindfulness, having enough sleep, and other factors such as maintaining a good diet. I'm going to watch your video on what singers should eat and drink as this is an area that I would like to learn more about. Why do you think that singers from the past such as well as singers in the present day like to smoke cigarettes, for example? Is there a misconception about vocal raspiness or voice depth for men which can falsely lead singers to picking up the habit? Would love to know what you think!

Dr. Dan, at the end of my freshman year in high school i had made the pop group in my school and had a durable, rich, and strong contratenor voice, and i remember having a decent range of about 3 and a half octaves. Over the summer after freshman year and during sophomore year my voice deteriorated, i now have a range of 1 octave and a half on a good day, i feel like my throat i being squeezed after long peroids of singing, i can't do Falsetto at ALL like i cant get out of my chest voice, well, i can do a mixed voice but it feels strained after im finished,my vibrato became incredibly slow, and my voice cant be powerful anymore. Its not puberty because my resting voice is essentially intact from freshman year and my lower register hasnt expanded lower since freshman year. I am now a junior and feel powerless, depressed, and robbed of the only thing i love doing. Please help me and tell me what to do. I have told my doctor but she brushes it off. Please help me.

in my own experiment , masturbation does really affect our voice. hence, you loose muscles and cant build muscles in your body properly when you continue fapping and we knew that singing otherwise needs to build up muscles to make it natural in your instrument(body) . wise technique for successful singing.however this is my own observation .and i think i found some articles that supports this theory.
