I work on VSDs (Variable Speed as apposed to Variable Frequency) daily. Just had an electrician hook up one of my drives backwards last week. 480V Shorted the IGBTs and Cross-phased. We were standing in front of the cabinet and the door must have mushroomed out 6 inches. Oops, that's a $15000 mistake. Usually I double check everything but he assured me everything was good to chooch...

I know a guy who forgot to install the 120v adapter board for the 24vdc inputs on a magnetek drive. It was for an old crane with a 120v control circuit. His drive blew up in quite the same way and the funniest thing about it is he has been working with drives for 30 years as an electrician in a factory. It happens to the best of us! I’ve never wired the load lugs on a drive backwards but I know a few guys who have. They all had similar results 🤣 A wise man once told me, “If you aren’t fucking shit up, you aren’t fixing shit.” 🤷♂️

Hmmm, interesting... I run my Harrison M300 off a Mitsubishi VFD and mounted up the optional PU under the DRO. Makes varying the output frequency really easy. The lathe has gearing to spin up to 2500 rpm so I never really have to overclock the motor but being able to slow things right down for blind internal screw cutting is uber cool. In all fairness it does say on the first page of the Manuel not to let the angry pixies anywhere near chooching up the output 😁 Yep, I cheated and read the manual, these VFDs are just amazing little things. I still run the Bridgeport off a rotary phase converter I built myself as there are issues with the contactors running off 110v which I don't have time to sort out.

We made it about 30 seconds into the video and she called you a "narrow minded ass" and walked out of the room after hitting my computer screen with the chip she was working on, from her work station across the other end of the room. I thought it was funny, so... I'm hitting "subscribe" so i can turn on your videos when i want the lab to myself ! Can you guess what set her off? LOL

I recently learned that the JCI series 2 VFD which is EATON H-MAX series will take AC 3 phase into its output and live with it (I am sure if it was trying to output power that would not have been the case)
@godztempus9 жыл бұрын
Flyback diodes blew. Just too small to handle the inrush current to the capacitors at startup. If you put some current limiting resistors in series you could actually get the drive to power up from the output power. In fact, when you are decelerating a load the current that flows back and causes the DC bus to rise flows through those flyback diodes. There were a bunch of assumptions that led to me powering up a 1200A VFD from the output stage. For this particular lesson we were lucky enough to have only a 300A breaker on the front end. That saved our bacon. We did have to wrastle new 350MCM cables for both the input and output stages to fix that fuck up.

If you want to see smoke & a extra loud noise energize a 125 HP VFD. I replaced a bad IGBT in what Danfoss tech called a 6 pak without replacing bad small control board. I moved ramp up time to 60 seconds. When it got to 10 Hertz IGBT blow up. Thought I was back in Nam with the extra loud noise. Was told that all drives 5HP & under are now considered throw aways. Does anybody repair boards on larger drives anymore? Throw away large boards from 60 to 125 HP because drive company does not repair them.

You let out the snoke! Small little vfd. Fractional or 1 horse? Not very many people seem to understand how a vfd works. I work on them quite often as i am a pumping equipment technician and 3 phase motors and 3 phase submersible motors are very common. I typically get my hands on 7.5hp to 200hp vfds
