Destroying language myths (with Shana Poplack)

It’s an unfortunate fact that many people don’t know the truth about how language works outside of their grammar books, in the real world, but recently I spoke to someone who is trying to change that.
Shana Poplack and her sociolinguistics laboratory at the University of Ottawa are known as the mythbusters, because they destroy damaging myths about language and language change.
They don’t look at language in its ideal state: they look at how language is used every day by real people, and the discoveries they make are often controversial, and fly in the face of deeply-held beliefs, but their discoveries are always based in truth.

In my opinion, a sentence containing constructions of other languages.A person does it subconsciously. I try to attract his attention, his mirror neurons fire. So He copies what catches his eye, attention, and foreign words in an ordinary sentence they will always catch the eye and attract attention, thereby placing emphasis on what the person is saying and attracting interest to the interlocutor.

Wonderful interview! Thank you very much! Again, we can see that there is no 'right' or 'wrong' language. As someone said, there are no good or bad words, the words can only be appropriate or inappropriate.

Sometimes, I find myself mixing languages with bilinguals friends. Because sometimes that word appears in the mind first. However I find it myself harder or even it all using Spanglish words. After saying that , I am careful when talking with people who are not bilinguals. I keep all the conversation in that target language.

Well,.I must say ( not without embarrasing ) that I'm think that without being aware, I am a kind of judgement person, because I strongely avoid to use some kind of words that I am aware that they are use by certain kind of people, for example those who has been in jail, ( that is only an example) . And I thought I was an Open mind person 😔

A phonomenon in language maybe you'd notice that a person whose education level is low and he doesn't know many vocabs, he doesn't even know how to read newspapers, but he is still able to speak fluently his mother tongue, do u know why?

Excellent! Those are the kind of things that I really used to think about. In general the educational systems is full of myths and prejudices on language learning. The traditional teachers are full of shit. They embrace a lot of crap in the learning language process. Thanks a lot.

The primary reason why people put foreign words in their native language sentences is their desire to show off demonstrating that they know a foreign language. At least in Russia many do so thinking it's cool. I personally don't think so. And it's remarkable that most of those who do so, don't really speak a foreign language but just know some of the terms.

That’s not always the case. While some people do opt for English words to show off or create an image of being modern and hip (e.g. креатор instead of создатель, etc.), most of the time it is a natural part of borrowing from other languages. Words like контент, блогер, пиарщик and many others have long become assimilated and don’t even feel foreign to most native speakers of Russian. Anyways, she was talking about an entirely different thing - code-switching, which is when bilingual people insert whole chunks of foreign language inside their native tongue (or vice verse) to convey an emotion or express themselves more precisely. They make a conscious choice to do this when the situation is appropriate, that is your interlocutor speaks two languages as well.

I'm afraid that you'll have to make you language more inclusive. You'll have to get rid of the European languages of Linguistics and change them for Chinese, seeing that the Chinese are the most populous people. Change the latin derived, "subjunctive" to the Chinese noun corresponding. Don't be youknowwhatist otherwise you'll be cancelled. Now, hurry up and get started and don't complain. You know that is fair! Stop being selfish. There's only one right thing to do. Forget your raethist past and be inclusive in language! Be inclusive!
