Oh snap! I've always thought about immigrant children who can't speak their parents language well as being a problem for this hypothesis.

I enjoyed and agreed with most of this video as an ESL teach, except for the beginning, asking/giving directions is important. What if you need to find a bathroom or help someone find a bathroom and there's a sense of urgency? I'm going to place it highly due to the social aspect of not wanting to soil one's self in public/professional environment and the social cost of doing so. So hopefully you're realizing this and you change your mind about that class being a waste of time.

Super useful video about setting expectations. Makes sense that my vocabulary increased dramatically in college when I started reading several hours a day and listening to hours of lectures on the materials using those specific vocabulary words found in the materials I had read. I tell adult students aiming for the top of the pyramid in English learning that doing a degree in some subject, with it being taught only in English, should get you to the treasured C1/C2 level, though if you have self discipline you could just read a lot, take notes and discuss your readings with an online tutor. Then afterwards come up with a thesis statement based on your discussion and write an essay on it for your tutor to review. Very few people are willing to do this in my experience though. Most students just want to get to a level where they are understood and not stressed when they speak English.

1st class video - everything I have been telling students for a while at different times all compiled in one place. Especially 11:35 - 12:37 The second option is way better! The first option is also a bad habit that makes you reliant on a translator/switching back to the L2, it is basically the worst thing in the world for making progress and annoying yourself and others.

I looked up the CEFR booklet after watching this and found the chart displayed in the video. I noticed a huge error. There was 0 put down for Understanding Conversation Between Other Speakers and Understanding as a Member of a Live Audience in the chart. That makes no sense.

2:22 There is one little problem with this gentleman's bold statement. Every single human who has ever existed and exists today.... has learned their own native language (at least the early stages) via comprehensible input. no young child learns their language by using anki or memorizing verb conjugation tables. Yes, absolutely once children enter school.....they are taught proper ways of saying things but I would argue that their time would be far better spent reading things which have been written using proper grammar and sentence structures and listening to people who are speaking using proper grammar and sentence structures. Without knowing what nouns and verbs are or what a past participle is.....without ever having heard these terms, they can gain a high level of skill in their native language and know when something "just sounds right" without having learned a single rule. To suggest that the way that we know, for a fact, that every human has initially learned their own language is wrong..... well, I'll leave it to you to decide what you think about that.
@chandie5298Күн бұрын
4:40 The phenomenon that he is describing here is due to the children translating in their heads rather than thinking in the new target language. One of the entire points of learning via comprehensible input is that you acquire the language and thus THINK in that language rather than needing the time to translate what you're hearing into your own native language, then decide upon a response...then translate that response from your native language into the target language and verbally respond. The time it takes to do that prevents comfortable common communication.

You are comparing something that cannot be compared. Surgery is practice and knowledge from a completely different area, how can they be compared with learning a language? I think you have distorted the essence of the method too much. This is the first time I’ve heard that you don’t need to speak or write in the language you’re learning.

Hello! I know that you receive a lot of comments. However, I'd like to tell you some things:) I've been learning English for around 3 months, and I'm practicing without any tutor. It's can be hardest if we compare it with other people learning through courses or by amazing methods. Even though I feel powerless sometimes, I always watching your videos to get motivated, excited. I thought too many times about give up, because English is a bit complex to me. But, if you've dedication enough, you'll be able to get fluency. Your definitions about what's the fluency made me going on with my learning, even though I don't know how to use the right grammar or specifics details to speak as a native sometimes. I'm grateful to know your channel, that helps me very much. If you're reading it, ignore my mistakes. You changed my point of view the good way, that's why I just want say you " thank you so much". I just wanna get the ability to express myself, although mistakes. :)

Ahh, yes, let's keep aiming downward so today's children will have even fewer opportunities to go into higher education or move into professional careers. The dumbing down of society will eventually phase out the middle class, leaving only a small population of rich people and a massive number of poor people. While the rich send their kids to prep schools and Ivy League universities, which will lead them to high-paying careers, the poor will settle for participation diplomas and manual labor jobs at Amazon and Costco. The American dream where people were once able to rise from poverty to great success will become forgotten, and it'll be replaced with people who are grateful just to have a little food on their table and a job in a massive factory like those you can find in China. Personally, I don't care one bit what people think of me if I describe something like the Grand Canyon as "majestic" or "stupendous." I'm not going to limit my vocabulary and say, "it's f@%&ing HUGE..." just to fit in with the uneducated. We should be encouraging people to become their best selves; not driving us even further into becoming the wealthiest third world country on the planet.
