I'm so glad! Yes, we teachers sometimes take Detache' for granted...but it's got some traps that can catch students if we don't teach it right.

Thank you so much for your videos. I haven't been able to practice with my violin this year because the bow "hair"? xD Broke so I can't get a replacement in this city :/ (I live in Veracruz Mexico) the stores have only bows available and well, I'm not buying another cheap bow and there have been other expenses on other instruments I use more often but, regardless, your videos are amazing and your playing is beautiful. Again, thank you so much!

Oh, ArSa, it pains me that you are prevented from practicing because of missing bow hair. It's a choice you have to make between buying another cheap bow ($40), or paying for a professional re-hair ($50 plus shipping to a good luthier). Frankly, I would purchase the cheap bow so that you can start making some progress. But I know it's hard to juggle all the needs, repairs, supplies, etc. It's TOUGH!

For a beginner, focus on your bow hold, getting comfortable holding the violin, and keeping your bow straight in the middle lane. After that, beautiful tone production! Good luck, and keep up the great work! Oh, by the way, detache' is a good start....because a good detache' means straight bow, good bow hold, and will lead to beautiful tone!

On a small note, I would recommend on investing in a small audio interface and a large diaphragm condenser microphone. This year I got for myself a AKG P420 and it's an amazing mic but it may be a bit on the pricey side. A good microphone, a mic stand, position it well and this videos will be magnificent!

I wrote that mic down. Right now, I'm using a Rode Condenser Shotgun mic, because I have to position it off-screen. But I'll check out the AKG.

So scary how basic skills get thrown under the rug sometimes. I was working on a violin excerpt from Glinka's Russian and Ludmilla Ovt. and my fast detache strokes were not as clean as they should have been. This video helped point out my excessive colle attempt. Thank you so much!

I absolutely LOVE the Yuan Qin violins from Southwest Strings. They are $600, and they will take you up to ADVANCED. (so...you could start with something cheaper, but if you want to give yourself every advantage, this is a small investment for a HUGE advantage. As far as bows go....I do not like carbon fiber. Get Pernambuco. Southwest has really good bows for $125. Get one with a FULLY LINED FROG. They tend to be better qualitiy.

As an absolute beginner I love your videos! I have one question: How long does it take to master the straight bowing approximately? I know it will depend on so many things. So let's say: With a daily practice of 30-60 minutes, should I be able to bow straight after 6 months or more like after a year or will it take longer? Thank you in advance!

Hi Paprika Yes, it's a mixed question. So, practicing 30-60, you would definitely be able to bow straight BY FEEL, (not using your eyes....or just briefly checking) on EASY SONGS. But when you start playing harder songs, the bow will go crooked, and your sounding point will slip. If it doesn't, then you are the exception. So, students learn the skill of straight bow and sounding point, but then they have to constantly reinforce the skill or it falters on harder stuff. When working on straight bow, also be sure to focus on maintaining your sounding point (the highway). That will help your tone a TON! Good luck!

Oh dear. I know that feeling. Are there other teachers in your area? The Suzuki ASsociation of the Americas has a great "find a teacher" app on their website. I have a question about my bow. When I am playing especially bowing on the E string or the A string, I noticed individual hairs from my bow are breaking off but only when I play on those two strings. Have you ever come across this? 😳 thank you and I appreciate everything you are doing for folks like me who are just beginning. I have only been playing or should I say learning the violin for about three weeks and I have already learned two sings and I am working on my third. I am also learning how to read music slowly. The songs I have learned r happy birthday, are you sleeping brother John, and now I am working on the happy farmer.😃❤️

I love a good mystery, Life with Jimmy. So, tell me: is the hair breaking in the same spot? If the hairs are always breaking about 6-8 inches from the frog, I can confidently say you are pinching the horse hairs between your bow stick and the violin string. 6-8 inches from the frog is where the curve of the bow brings the wood and hair closest together, and pinching the hair is very easy to do. So, tighten your bow, or ease up on your pressure, or don't tilt the stick too much. (those 3 things will solve this issue). Let me nkow if this solves it!

What is the bow stroke denoted by both a dot and line above th enote as is Suzuki v. 6 La Folia?

Great question. Bow strokes are such a confusing thing, because we all call them by different names. That stroke, specifically in La Folia, would be considered a "elongated staccato". Galamian does not show that combined articulation in his book, "Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching". So we are left to just describe what it is asking for. You want a space between the notes, but you want big broad strokes.

Can you please help me I am trying to figure out if the strings are the same for a hollow body violin as they are for an electric violin?

It comes down to personal preference, Jimmy. But electric players tend to gravitate toward steel core strings like....oh, Prims for example. But my classical tastes DO NOT LIKE steel core strings regardless of what I'm playing. I prefer the response, complexity, and warmth of synthetic core strings such as Pro Arte or Infeld Reds. But as far as the equipment goes.....I have not found any reason to limit your choices on an electric. (I play on an electric occasionally, and I use the same strings on that as I use on my classical violin). If you learn otherwise, please share with me, because I'm speaking from "experience", not "expertise" on this subject!

My daughter purchased it about 12 yrs ago and got it off eBay with the bow and case etc for under 100$. Then I came along n adopted it! 😃❤️I always wanted to play....Then I heard some electric violins and I thought I was going to lose my mind!! The beautiful sound!! Well long story short..... santa🎅🏻delivered mine early today! It figures I broke a string tuning it..... it was the E string!! Anyway...... thank you for always being there for us!
