I have the Iron Man Edition and I love it. It looks so much better than the regular Kona. Love the 1.6L turbo with the dual clutch transmission and all wheel drive. I disagree with all your negative comments about DCT's (although admittedly I would prefer it was a manual). Nevertheless it's an incredibly sporty little car and you can throw it around in corners (despite the warning sticker on the visor lol). The Iron Man is pretty much top of the range and not boring like the one in the video. It has leather seats (with embossed iron man logo) , climate control, proximity key with push button start, heads up display, Marvel LED door puddle lights, LED headlights and tail lights, red seatbelts and accents, 18 inch rims, and more. I agree with you on the safety stuff. The lane keep assist works only sometimes on good roads with clear lanes. Other times you'll think it's about to work but it will go "nope, too hard" and disengage. I definitely wouldn't rely on it. I also really wish it had adaptive cruise control.

Paul, don't ever apologise for being too critical about active safety equipment. Truth be told, it makes a significant difference when it comes to driver, passenger and pedestrian safety, and it irritates me (as well) when companies skimp on such features. Great review by the way.

Thanks, Sam. And agree with you - safety shouldn't be an optional thing and car companies should be champing at the bit to include as much as they can for their customers.

Love the review! We bought a 2020 Kona SEL Plus trim in April of 2020 and it had a retail price around $25,000 USD. We got a $2,788 rebate and also had a trade in so out the door we got the car for $19,000. The SEL Plus trim with AWD and is an interesting mix as it adds heated seats, Infinity audio system, sunroof, 17" wheels, power drivers seat, 8" (I think) Android audio/Apple car play infotainment and full power accessories (cruse, windows, locks, etc.) It also has collision detection, lane departure alerts, blindspot monitoring and rear cross traffic collision detection. The engine is the standard NA 2.0 inline 4. It isnt fast but it is quick enough for in town driving where our speeds max out at 45 MPH but can handle freeway driving where going 75-80 MPH is not a problem. The transmission is the standard 7 speed auto unit which is smooth shifting but I really wish Hyundai would either offer this car with the 2.4L from the Sonata or offer the 1.6T with the 7 speed and not the rough dual clutch transmission which is our only turbo engine option here in the states. Air Con and heater work great, audio system is awesome, seats are comfortable. For me it is the perfect all weather vehicle for my short commute to work in town. Just wish it had a bit more power but the handling is great and for what I bought it for, it fits the bill just fine.

You are correct about consumers not concerned about hardness of the dash, as long as it doesn't scratch and is easy to clean. The more cars on the road with AEB the better, when turning into my driveway my car got rear ended by an food delivery driver whilst they were looking at their GPS... I am now in the market for a new car (mine was a writeoff)

What are your thoughts on the split indicators for the rear? I don't understand why only Hyundai and Kia does this but they tend to place the rear indicators away from the braking lights and lower towards the ground. And if you're driving an SUV you really can't see them that well especially ones equipped with dim halogens.
@-TJ-

Yeah, it not only looks weird, but some people wont notice the indicators or reverse lights if they are paying attention to the brake lights.

Well, we bought the 2020 Kona Active with the two liter engine and six speed auto / Au$ 28000.- and done a 3000 km running it in trip in Queensland. We never used more than 6 Liter of a 95 octane unleaded petrol per 100 km, driven in Eco mode. We did ask about what the dealer thinks running it on E10 and they said they would not trust that mix so every second tank of fuel is a 91 octane unleaded from now on. The actual speed showing is 8 km under when sitting on 100 km / h and the cruise control is a bit all over the place when flicked to setting it and the overrun is quite big so watch out or get a speeding fine! The car should have 17 inch wheels to have a more correct reading. We noticed the Kona versions they drive around in Korea are in general better equipped, like they all seem to have a traffic cam built into the rear vision mirror, so why do they have this and we are not? The car's radio reception is very poor, compared with whatever car we drove before. John Cadogan named it the poverty version Kona and yeah it is poorly equipped and has really not much on storage compartments, very spartanish indeed!! The panels and covers might be hard plastic but would scratch easily. We like the handling and it has a very smooth cruising ride. The lane assist mode is not bad, but even there are line markings on the road, the car can not always see them. So far no regrets, we like how it performs.

In India, Kona is in as Full EV than ICE Avatar which can run 452 kms on a single charge(real world range is 300-320). The 39.2 kWh Kona comes with a 100 kW motor. That equates to 134 BHP of power, and torque is rated at 395 Nm. This would cost 28 Lakhs INR on-road.

Hi Paul, I bought the Elite 1.6L turbo about eight months ago and it is an awesome little car ! Very nippy around town and handles beautifully. On the open road the steering automatically tightens up (electronically controlled) and this makes it feel very safe and well grounded. Cost $36K OTR so not cheap. First thing i did was install aftermarket LED globes and now night driving is fine. Funny about motoring journos' obsession with hard plastics. I only care about the bits I touch like the console. Why would I care about the dashboard when I never touch it ? I think Mazda have gone OTT with this stuff and now they make plush, heavy, slow cars. No fun !

I recognise styling is subjective, but I just can't get past the exterior styling. More doesn't equal better. No real flowing lines or synergy, it's completely incongruous. I can only imagine they designed each part in a vacuum, without considering how each part fit into the whole. Question Paul, do you have a comparative reference for what 100 on the gyrometer is like in terms of hardness? Like concrete?
@CarExpertAus
@CarExpertAus 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! We actually own two Durometers - one for car interiors and one for harder surfaces. The A Durometer will measure things like plastics and silicon, while the C Durometer does surfaces like concrete or bowling balls. For reference, the Volkswagen T-Cross's dashboard almost maxed out our Durometer (you can see that review here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/quCjmtt4xtDYfKM.html).

My partner had one as a work car for a while, the 1.6T is actually a nice peppy engine, with great fuel economy, let down by the horrible DCT, the interior like almost all cheaper cars is very scratchy like you said, the headlights are downright dangerous for country driving, Cabin noise makes hands free calls almost impossible and I personally hated the driving position, the door sills sit very high, to give the fo SUV feel, but you can't see anything because you have the ride height of a compact hatch, combined with the sloping roof like and giant C pillar. I miss the 1.6T in the I30 she currently has, but it's (I30) a much well rounded package over all.

I want to know where you get your pricing? Every video and I mean EVERY one of them, the prices you say "starting from" are usually 5 - 10k less than what they're actually going for. For example, the price you listed is what Hyundai lists the Go (base model) as. The active is actually $30k... I don't understand where you guys are pulling these numbers from?

The prices are exclusive of on-road costs. Each state’s pricing depends on your state’s taxes and the dealer’s delivery costs.

@@CarExpertAus literally looking at carsales right now - cheapest exclusive of on-road costs i can see is WA $27,800 for the Active. But why not just use the RRP from the companies websites when giving price details? It makes much more sense as that's the actual number everyone other than maybe the manufacturer and journalists are given and have to work with.

Had one as a rental, hated it! Gutless at highway speeds, noisy engine, alot of road noise on the highway, cruise control cant even maintain speed properly goes up and down as much as 6kph on a flat highway and doesnt show what it set at. Buy a Kia Seltos, much better car in every way.

Australians sure don't get much for their money. Tech wise also. Hyundai sure fucking you up the arse. Compared to Canadian version of these cars.

Remarkably in some Countries the word Kona is practically phorbidden because is a slang word with bad... contents. At least, in 6 countries practicing the "Bible" as a religion they will never allow that word. When I saw it for the first time I thought it was fool's day. Very funny in did. Real bad word..🥴

Why are all the journalists over 6 foot? Just go break some rocks, go boxing. That is a well suited job for you, not car journalist.
