Who are you doing paint correction for, your client, or your ego. As a business owner, you want to focus on your customers, not on perfect paint.

Excellent video Yvan. This has been my thought since getting into the business. Most customers don't care and won't notice that perfect finish. Perfect explanation, I know I am guilty of showing customers scratches and imperfections in their paint only to kick myself when struggling to remove them. Same here, then over time I've learned to ask what they see and then explain I'm going to do a light polish only. I still find myself chasing some scratches and have to stop myself. Not for my ego, but reminding myself, they customer will never see this as I'm shining my handheld scangrip to the paint in order to see it. My headlamp light doesn't pick it up that's where I'm trying to draw the line. Great video Yvan!

Hit the nail on the head! I ALWAYS recommend a "one step" or "enhancement". If its a client who sees what I see, I'll sympathize and make recommendations based on their expectations. Just today I did a maintenance wash on a vehicle I did a 1 step on several months ago - it had swirls again. He didn't notice. I did. All he pointed out was a scuff on the mirror he made himself carrying something! Listen to your customers and do what's best for THEM, not you.

@@Detailers-Business-Academy I experienced this first hand recently. I detailed an older black Camry for a client, the paint was hammered - no gloss or slickness, dull, lots a swirl marks and several deep scratches. But the clients main concern was the filthy interior. They mentioned the paint scratches, but had a budget they didn't want to go over. We agreed that I would address their main priorities and if I had time within their budget I'd see what I could do for the paint. Well I used up all the budgeted time without being able to do any paint correction/enhancement. I did do a through wash & decon of the paint and applied a spray ceramic sealant. When they picked the car up, I told them I didn't have much time to work on the paint but they were absolutely thrilled with how shiny it was and even comment "wow you made that big scratch that my Dad put in the hood look much better". I was very surprised for a second but then went along and said "yeah the 'wax' I used on it adds a nice shine and kind of blends in the scratches". Total adlib. LOL.

This is perfect for the DIY at home person detailing their own vehicles. I got a brand new car. I ceramic coated the car after doing all of the steps EXCEPT for paint correction. Why? The investment in the polisher, pads, chemicals and time is not worth it. There are factory scratches etc. but only I see them. My car looks better than 99.9% of cars on the road and that’s what everyone wants.

I like using a paint gauge and putting in microns vs Ml's is brillant easier for the brain to grasp. Yvan, I was that customer you are describing and yet now trying to be 'a' detailer. I fully agree with you that the customer needs to be satisfied and our goal as detailers should match their expectations. It is not really that hard and once we come to terms with that level of expectations we can enjoy less stress and still produce a living. All our forums are littered with displays of beautiful results and everyone is so approving. Guess what, if we can produce clean cars and shiny protected sufaces the customer is happy, swirls and all. It is not a perfect world but neither is their cars and they do not care. Disclaimer: The curb rash done by my car's other driver drives me nuts. But why fix them and fix them and fix them?

Great points Yvan really makes you think are we correcting the customer's paint for them or yourself 🤔 I've had customers request a 'machine polish' after the detail because they are selling the car, I stop them immediately and recommend they don't waste their money on paint correction if they are selling, and then explain why. You don't know what the purchaser is doing to do once they brought the car. Just my thoughts 😉

I recently bought a new car. It was a demo with about 100klms. Although the dealership cleaned up the car there are still some very light swirl marks on some panels. I will take it to a professional detailer but will ask them to gently correct the paint in preparation of laying a ceramic coat. I'm hopeful that the paint correction will not take away too much of the clear coat. I won't be too concerned if they cannot get rid of all the swirl marks.

I have been detailing for many years both as an ametuer and a pro, i don't ever use compound to remove lacquer as i have always felt it was too much of a compromise, great to hear my thoughts and notions over the years have been verified and vindicated, so i totally agree on this video, as for ONR, i really don't agree.

Unfortunately not, while wipe on clear coats definitely have their place, they are not a replacement for factory clear coat. Even the best Body Shop clear coats are not as good as factory. A wipe on clear coat should be considered as a last ditch effort to save the factory finish.

Isn’t sun showing more swirls and scratches in comparison to any inspection light ?
@Detailers-Business-Academy

That depends on the light.

@jonathonsuess9646 3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Too much light can obscure as much as a lack of light can. I can look at a panel 100 times and not see something from multiple angles. Then on the 101st time I see a swirl or a scratch or something else. I do my best to check my work and rework what I find if it’s within reason or of my making. Ultimately, I tell my customers to give me a call within a week at the very most if they see something I may have missed. Nobody does, though.

Hi Im live in Europe, Hungary, my englis is realy bad but i need a litle help. Most of the times if the customer is looking for "more perfection" i use a 2 step corection with te rotary (sonax ultimate cut and perfect finish combo). Is it too much for a normal clearcoat?? (80+ micron) If its a kia/hundai/vw...etc with the base 30-40 micron thick paint i use only just one stage. Sorry for commenting 1 year later i discover your channel 1 week ago... sadly.

Thank you for the feedback. I’ve been also teaching hands on skills for almost 3 decades. That said the skill most detailers require education on is how to improve as an entrepreneur. Knowing when to stop is as important as knowing how to make paint look perfect. Going for broke and making every car a masterpiece of polishing is easy, knowing how to give your customers value for their money while staying profitable is much harder.

I’m not sure if it’s a single stage or not but I will check the paint with my meter and go from their. I will do a test spot of course but usually always end up with perfect finish and a Rupes yellow. Is their anything you can help me with advise wise on polishing a single stage?? Do your car,moms car a friends car...as a reference to your exelence. But,you only need one chemical to wash a car inside and out. You can dress a car inside and out with one chemical. Just use your brain and common sence. A car can benefit from a paint correction,once in its life time.
