I remember the times in mid-1990s when these were still new. I was a boy and was fascinated by the looks of this car. In post-USSR Ukraine's most depressive Luhansk region any foreign car would look as if it was an alien spacecraft. One of my grandmother's neighbours had similar Passat B3 Variant in grey colour. I've spent hours looking through the windows into the cockpit, amazed by all those switches and dials and stuff.

Indeed, I drive a 1999 Seat based on the Polo 6N, and while this thing is slow and looks really bad (all banged up on the outside), it is so cheap to maintain and to fix that I am never sure that I want to give it up for something newer (not German makes though). It's really hard, if you're looking for a new-ish car to buy, which manufacturer still makes reliable models in the 2010s? Where the spare parts are also not hugely expensive (i.e. I paid 60€ for an exhaust system, but for many cars, it's more than 5 times that!) There should be more cheap cars on the road.

@@boxenjoyerkona I can fully agree with your statement, and I think I'll be keeping this car as long as it works. I'm a bit scared as to what happens when the sunroof may stop working at some time in the future (because that is a really important feature to me, rather than having no AC which is only sometimes a bit unfortunate when the windows fog up), but as long as this hasn't happened, I see no reason to replace it. I just know that my mechanic doesn't like working on sunroofs all that much, where the whole headliner has to come out and so on, so yeah - knock on wood it still works.

This brings back so many childhood memories of sitting in my parents Passat and playing with the vents and buttons pretending it was a space ship. I remember thinking the newer (2000 ish same style as mk4 golf) Passat was so ugly with the rounded corners because I was used to seeing the older 80’s cars that were so square. I also remember playing with the fuel filler cap and being interested in how the V groove ran around the car except at the filler cap where it flattened out so you had a finger hold to open the flap. This is the first car I remember my parents having (although I know they had a Nissan Sunny before). The first car I got to drive; sitting on my mothers lap and steering down the dirt road. Probably this mundane thing is what started my interest in cars! Thanks for the great video.

Now that the car is old and my family owns it due to liquidation, Theyre thinking about buying a new car to keep in portugal. So I spoke to an advisor about exporting the vehicle back to canada. It would cost less than $2,000cad. And since the vehicle was sold in canada but now lives in portugal, importing it back to canada means that all taxes are exempt, and it would only cost shipping, and it does not have to be safetied to be imported. My next visit to portugal, I'm going to post pictures and vin on Vinwiki, so that the car's history (and future) can be documented. This car is HUGE (in size), and all 74hp 5speed is very slow. fastest ever gone with me in it was 140kph. Love your channel, man! Cant stop watching your videos. I'm really glad I found this channel because other car videos are too noisey. Too much going on, too much talking, music, and speedrunning. I love to hear all the sounds when someone works on cars and so many people butcher that, unlike you. They will never make cars like this again that run after sitting for a good amount of time. Thank you for bringing these cars a second life. Many of them didn't deserve to be abandoned the way they were.

Б-3 Пассаты очень сильно гниют. Этому просто повезло стоять без дорожных реагентов на хорошо проветриваемом месте.

I did this the exact same way on my '91 Passat B3. The paint was in a bad condition. After taking it to a car wash I've polished the whole car. I had to replace nearly everything from windshield to suspensions for safety inspection. Now the Passat is looking like a brand new car. A good and reliable classic vehicle.

After all those years in grass and it is not a ple of rust! That's amazing!

amazing wheels, the car looks perfect with these new, would be nice to see how you clean tires, brakes and suspensions with high pressure water jet, moreover i suggest you to clean the rims with a brush and Marseille degreaser, and finally black polish for the tires, they will be as new as from the dealer!

very nice to watch , keep up the good job :D . I would like to restore an old merc (w123) and use it as a day to day , only thing that bugs me is the safety of the cars in that era ..
