A Criminal Past in particular stands out as not only the best piece of content from Mankind Divided, but the Eidios Montreal Deus Ex games as a whole, and one of the best DLCs I've ever played. Now I want an immersive sim set in a prison.
System Rift is another quality addition to Mankind Divided, seeing fan-favorite Pritchard returning into the fold from Human Revolution for a data-bank heist. While not as fun as A Criminal Past, it's still a lot of fun and further a playthrough if you enjoyed Mankind Divided.
Desperate Measures is a Day 1 DLC (ugh) that was eventually released for free, and should've just been a side quest in Mankind Divided to begin with. Enjoyable, but doesn't hold a candle to A Criminal Past or System Rift.
Let's dig in with this Mankind Divided DLC review/analysis/retrospective/critique. Hopefully this isn't the last time Eidios Montreal gets to take a crack at the immersive sim world and Deus Ex.

Adam Jensen's Deus Ex has been great, its a tragedy what happened to and after Mankind Divided. The game was solid, finished it today. The world was amazing, but delivery of main plot was lacking hard.

The DLC with Pritchard should have been included into the main game. As for A Criminal Past, it is the most interesting and challenging "mission" in the whole game.

I didn't know what I was getting into with this one, and it was the last thing for me to do in the game. I was disappointed we didn't get a chapter like Rifleman Bank (without augs and inventory). Then I start playing this and fall in love.

I got back into Deus Ex Mankind Divided recently and had some spare pocket money to get the season pass. System Rift, I thought it was ok. A Criminal Past, I really thought this was real good. Personally, with Mankind Divided, I’d love to see more of Adam Jensen’s future adventures. It’s a better game than CyberPunk 2077 (as of this moment).

"Budget Malcolm X" is probably one of the funniest pieces of writing I've encountered in the _Deus Ex_ series. Also, as for your point about how refreshing it was to see attractive-looking females in a game and suggesting that Square Enix is to credit, I don't think so. _Human Revolution_ had maybe five females at most who weren't off-putting, especially with all the weird hairstyles they had going on, haha.

I have no idea if the writer for HR and MD is even working for Eidos atm. She's keeping very much to herself ever since they got pulled from Deus Ex... And the lead artist, Johnathan Jacques Belletette? He no longer works there. And Michael McCann last worked on Borderlands 3's soundtrack (surprisingly, I was shocked when I heard some familiar sound...) But even when Deus Ex does return, it will be just that little bit different... I hope it lives up to what Eidos did.

Mankind Divided hit so many highs, including almost perfecting a number of mechanics central to immersive sims: incredibly detailed and interconnected hubs that encourage (but don't require) exploration, multiple potential approaches to problems/obstacles, a good hacking mechanic (but also a way of circumventing if you're not in the mood), good/very good dialogue system (apart from a few strange interactions with "sellers" for some reason), good stealth and combat, high production values, incredible sound design (including a great sound track), and great environmental storytelling that, if you pay attention closely, fills in a lot of blanks that a casual playthrough would leave uncovered, but still leaves just enough unknowns to keep you wondering what "really" happened . Palisade Bank, and Criminal Past (and to a lesser extent System Rift) probably stand as some of the best examples of what you can do with this genre. The character development and overall story arc of Mankind Divided were not up to the standard set by the original JC Denton Deus Ex or Human Revolution, which was disappointing, but I suspect was more a high-level publisher/commercial decision rather than the fault of the developers. All in all, the series is just crying out for further development. I had hoped Cyberpunk 2077 might have scratched the Deus Ex itch somewhat, but CD Project Red probably spent too long focusing on trying to create a next-gen open world, rather than focus on smaller more detailed levels to push their story forward. Here's to hoping that Square Enix see some sense and bring this series back with even further refinements to the immersive sim genre.

Just finished all DLCs yesterday and A Criminal’s Past blew me away with how crazy good it is. It’s so satisfying to crack through the prison’s security inch by inch with very limited resources. The story is quite plain and generic on the surface, but you can find something eerily wrong with the story by digging deeper with readings and small details in cutscenes. What I like most about this dlc is how harder being a pacifist is in this game compared to the base game. Through all the dlc, all I found are around 20 rounds of stun ammo, 10 tranq darts and a small handful of gas grenades; which obviously aren’t enough to knock everyone in the prison out. It forced me to count my shot and not tase anyone I see like the base game, and always reminds me of how much easier it is if I just grab a gun and kill everyone. Being a pacifist is something I have to work for in this dlc and not just normal shooting with “knockout” instead of “dead”. (I chose not to use the drug or biocell because I thought there would be a repercussions later in the story, but found out there is none after I finished the dlc lol)

I liked it because Jensen lets you decide how to "spin a yarn" to the bad agent in front of you! I mean you get to use those experimental augs? You still can answer something different about the agent you tried to rescue even if it's not true? Just before Jensen finally decides to let the power slip right trough her fingers? Awesome!

One of the things I like about A Criminal Past is the way it limits your resources and abilities in a way the main game did not and makes you tackle difficult scenarios without that overpowered feeling you had by the middle of the main game.

I finally got into this game when I wanted to several times but It never stuck to me. Then when I heard the TF29 song in the HQ I just felt this vibe and then the gameplay loop also connected for me, using the stun gun and just pew pewing my way through. I was amazed how good the writing was and the level design and Prague itself. I know czech so it was really fun to listen in to conversations. It's so sad that they didn't get another chance at a Deus ex, when I think this game in many ways is better at being cyberpunk than cyberpunk. There are so many hilarious details if you pay attention as well, like I broke in Prague into a storage facility that belonged to a store, and when I next time spoke to the store owner he hinted he had seen me on the security footage, and I was shocked and thought it was amazing. I have played a shitton of games as well through my life, but mankind divided was a game where I actively didn't rush the main story and went through the side missions as well. Give it a try folks, when you get into Deus Ex finally after fiddeling with the controls and all, it's so worth it. It's a shame the game is so short..

I just wish unlocking your augs had more varied options and consequences in Criminal Past. Avoided the pill and the modded biocell because I thought there was some sort of after effect, but it turned out to be nothing. I just wish there was a sidequest to get a technician to remove your limiter chip, if you opted to go without activating your augs in the beginning so it would feel like you've actually worked your way up to turning your augs back on.

A Criminal Past is a sorely overlooked slice of Deus Ex. Am I the only one who though that the whole exercise was a fabrication? Given the prevailing theory of Adam Jensen being a clone with implanted memories, maybe this scenario was manufactured and the interview is to test these memories and Jensen's response to them.

I really wish they hadn’t bothered with the 💩 rift mode and instead spent that time finishing the main game’s story and more meaningful dlc like a criminal past -which is great! Shame they couldn't incorporate that yellow hoodie guy (Ivan Berk) into the game better. Could've worked well as a boss fight at the end of the GARM mission. Imagine something like this: Encounter #1 - cameo right before the bombing Encounter #2 - in the middle of the Golem City mission. He gets harassed by some cops and you can choose to help him. Desperate Measures - as a main story quest during the 2nd visit to Prague. You learn that he was the bomber here. Encounter #3 - GARM mission. Either a combat boss battle or a dialogue battle, depending if you helped him out in Golem City. Dialogue battle could end with him betraying Marchenko and giving you his kill switch. Desperate Measures feels like a better version of the Tong Rescue DLC from DX:HR. Since we do actually visit the security company HQ this time. I think we were supposed to visit Belltower HQ in DX:HR but it had to be cut. Man, DX:HR had a loooooot of cut content. Belltower HQ, Upper Hengsha hub, Montreal hub, India hub, Purity First facility mission, etc.

I’ve played these DLC’s a lot, and one thing that was mentioned here in this video that I noticed and absolutely agree with, is that desperate measures gives me a strong feeling that it was originally in the main game, and was likely cut for pacing reasons, because it feels like it’s part of the main story, but it really would have slowed down the main game significantly, because it was right on a knife edge where it was the perfect length the way it was released.

Hey, I’m just wondering, what platform did you play these on? I’ve just finished DXMD for the first time and was about to start the DLCs....but there seems to be some issue. Desperate Measures is “ready to play” System Rift... reads “purchased” at the bottom of the description, but when I click on it I’m taken to the ps store where the “installed” button is greyed out and no option to play. A Criminal Past...when move down to this DLC it just reads “unknown” at the bottom and does absolutely nothing when I click on it. Has anyone else had this issue. There seems to be no information anywhere. I’ve uninstalled and downloaded again....but it’s exactly the same. I’m on the PS5. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. This is so frustrating. I’ve really enjoyed playing this game. I hope there’s a solution. Edit: Okay.....for anyone else having the same problem, I was rooting around on google and found this solution which worked... Went into settings, selected ‘users and accounts’ then selected ‘other’ and finally ‘restore licenses’

Never bought the DLC's since the micro-store was shut down and Montreal was put in the mines. but playing the surprising prequels of Deus Ex universe made me appreciate why game companies try their best to create legacies with and for the OG Deus Ex. I pray someone fully secures the license and fix the many issues Montreal had to face making both HR and MD, especially MD's terrible engine design with the 4 tri-pass cores into graphics and physics. Plus, my headcanon, OG Jensen DIED trying to stop Bob Page and MD, we're playing a programmed clone with Bob's secret monitoring that will forward into OG Bob Page's evil plans.

Hate to be a smartass - because overall your video was amazing! - but when you said there aren't many examples of video games set in prisons being a miss because it is the perfect setting for an immersive sim I had to cringe. You forgot about the sci-fi cult classic *Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay* which is all about breaking out of a maximum security prison and is dangerously close to being in the immersive sim genre.

They definitely need to get back to Deus Ex. There's also no reason in theory why Jensen has to be a trilogy, a lot of times doing a 4th is seen as a cash grab but if the quality is still there and the narrative isn't finished it can be justified. A third could be about Jensen and the fourth could be just before Denton... They're already talking about nano augmentation in Human Revolution and we get a snippet of theory progress on this at the end of Mankind divided but it's really not explored at all, another 2 games could be easily doable without it feeling cash grabby or trying to cram a little tiny bit of remaining story into 2 more games because there isn't a tiny bit left there's still a lot they can do between now and Denton.

Loads of Square Enix vibes (esp with soundtrack, sounds very similiar to RE 7) Actually come to think of it, much of the game is very a propos to the current state of affairs in the US. Very future looking. The liberal cucky boys should give this a play to see why they are tools. Looking forward to the DLC's. I hope I get Chronicles of Riddick vibes! Quite overlook dlc probably because they should have been part of the main game. Thank god the game flopped as it's deserved.

This guy just talked about the trend of western studios purposely making women unattractive? Ok he just earned a sub because it shows he's got an understanding and isn't afraid to talk about an uncomfortable truth.

What unattractive people are you talking about?
@goby009

where to begin? Mass effect andromeda, the last of us 2, watch dogs 2-3, assassin's creed series ( origins and beyond). There are others but It would be too long to list. Take ac valhalla, look at the woman npc and main character. It's like ubisoft is trying to make them look like dudes. the way they talk, the way they are standing etc.. Witcher 3 is a good contrasting example: the woman are attractive and feminine. That's the trend he's talking about.

@@goby009 we don’t talk about the character models in Andromeda, and no one has time to look good in a post apocalypse

@@fluiypj lol at the mass effect andromeda comment( you're the one who asked). but dude there's a difference between looking good with makeup( which I think is what you're referring to) and looking good plainly( which is what I'm talking about). Something easy on the eyes. Example: Tess from the last of us 1. Attractive and easy on the eyes but without make up

@@goby009 no I definitely see what you mean, and a lot of your examples were accurate. I just tend to think there’s a bit of bias in it. Emily Caldwin and Morgan Yu, ME3 Femshep, Anna (metro exodus), all attractive Tbh I don’t tend to play a lot of AAA games so maybe the trend is more prevalent than I realize

“2 thumbs up; quality level design; a lot of vents” I think these deus ex games r a bit over rated , they’re good n enjoyable enough, but they r nothing too special and they’re not even close to cyberpunk 2077.. and it does make me laugh a little how people praise the level design in these games lol it is some of the most lazy attempts at immersive sim design in recent memory, yet people act like it’s some intricate ass dishonored level stuff, and it most certainly is not .. again, cyberpunk does almost everything better than these deus ex games do, and anyone telling u otherwise is delusional or being disingenuous

- complains about AAA games being generic and formulaic - circlejerks a game who's level design is so vent heavy and unsubtle it's almost a meme how every single fucking house is connected to either an elaborate vent system or some hidden basement that has important stuff in it. Patriciantv said it best. Immersive sim is a masturbatory term that means nothing and more someone uses it to explain why something is good less value their opinion has

I was on board with your video until you started saying incel shit. Thumbed down, clicked off, wrote this, about to remove from history. Do you, I you use digital women as JOM that's fine but I don't need to hear about it.
