just bought a Golf 7.5 GTI upgrade from a polo 6r GTI, and the DSG farts on stock are soooooo sick dude !!! love the farts! farting all the way to the petrol station

You can go without DSG-Farts, but it is something the customer of "sporty" cars want. It is an additional function of the engine ECU, just like the farts you hear when you lift your foot off the throttle. Here, a more or less random pattern is used to inject some gas which is not ignited by the spark plugs. So not mandatory, just for the sounds.

I have a DSG VW - the best auto transmission there is - I have driven many auto cars - DSG is incredibly smooth. Cannot go without DSG now.

In South Africa the street lingo for the Golf GTi DSG cars is Vrrrrrr-pa.

Nice explanation! One question: why doesn't this harm the catalytic converter? On carbureted cars from the 90's, running too rich could cause the catalytic convertor to get too hot (burning raw fuel), resulting in an expensive repair (new cat, to replace the burned out one). Why doesn't DSG cause this problem? Is is because the # of shifts (and therefore # of DSG farts) is so low, when compared to rich running cars which let raw gas into the cat on every cycle?

So then is this phenomenon on female driven dsg cars still farts or can they opt for queefs ?

My stage 2 GTI's farts would wake the neighbors. I loaned my Dad my car once, and he called me up saying something is wrong with the car. After I explained to him what was happening, he loved it. He borrowed it many times after that.

Shifts are so fast; the engine has to cut spark between them... DSGs are better for fuel economy; throws raw fuel into the exhaust. Things aren't adding up here.

Conclusion: ignition cut. Something thats been present in the performance world for years with sequential gearboxes and flat foot shifting

Its just a form of antilag to simplify it. If you looked at the fuel maps you can see that. That way it keeps the RPM in the range. Nice video dude

Automatics have DSG farts too,man!! A while back, the exhaust broke behind the cat on the wifes automatic trans equipped 2014 jetta. Im here to let you know it also has DSG farts when its floored and shifts itself at redline 😂

I have a mk7.5 GTI 6spd and every once in a while I'll get a little fart action if I'm driving hard. Nothing like DSG, but just enough to make me smile.

Lol the DSG farts are part of what sold me on getting a GTI. Come to find out, with a stock DP, you can barely hear the farts.

Hey Paul, funny enough, my mk7 golf 1.8T makes shifts farts too above 3K RPM even though it is not a DSG :) I had to install a GTI exhaust to be able to hear them

My manual S1 makes similar farts on up shifts if I get close to redline.

I thought dsg sounded good before. Now after watching this video, all I hear is farts! You have ruined this for me! 😂 Haha

1. There is no "ignition cuts" of course, there is a just very late timing during the shifts, like -10 BTDC. So-you have only a very very small amount of unburnt fuel in your exhaust. If you put ALL of your unburned fuel during the upshifts outside, you will destroy your exhaust manifold and turbo and catalytic converter in no time. This DSG "fart" is basically because of the engine running on the very late timing. You can clearly see this on the VCDS log, this is not a rocket since. 2. DSG using this timing reduction not for the "flare prevention", but for the reduction of the torque during shifting, for preventing excessive clutch slipping, overheating and preventing the kicks. 3. During the ANY shift, there is the time frame, when both clutches are engaged, but with different pressure applied to the pistons. During the launch control, your DSG using the S mode shifting times map, which is way shorter than the D shifting time map, and less torque reduction, this why you can not hear the DSG fart. You can clearly see it in the DSG flash dump. 4. You can completely disable this torque reduction in DSG flash, you will have some kicks during shifting, even your wheels can chirp during the shifts. But you will have faster times.

Its unburnt fuel being dumped into the exhaust intentionally to make the noise. It’s part of the ECU calibration. Non sporty DSG equipped VAG cars don’t make the noise. It’s theatre to make the sporty cars stand out.

Is there a benefit to the ignition cut as opposed to using the clutches to slow down the engine? Is the second method how DSG's work on TDI models (since there's no spark to cut?)

My X1 18i has the DCT box and that fart sound is just godly IMO. The good engine noise+that fart.

It always makes me chuckle when I see an Audi go by making DSG farts, it's like behind the wheel is a silly little boy pretending he's on a race track, but in reality he's nipping down to Tescos to get some milk. He was the sort of boy that wouldn't play football that well, and would make engine noises in the playground at lunch time...you know the type..the lad in your road that would have playing cards strapped to their Batman Themed BMX... oh wait..that's me..🤣

This is what you can program in any decent standalone ECU as 'flatshift' with spark-cut. Ofc using it with a conventional manual gearbox, the shifing period is way longer and it sounds more like pop and bang instead of short transient 'farts'.

As much as I love my 6MT, I've had DSG envy for a while and next after my GTI will likely be a DSG R.

just bought a 2013 S4 and one of the things I was most looking forward to are the farts. sometimes it has louder farts than others, but it's okay.

Hey Guys, there is a lot of misinformation in this video. First of, the "farts" are purely for aesthetic purpose, they do nothing for the speed of shifting, it is all for show. Same goes for downshift crackles on for ex AMGs or BMWs Secondly, you might have noticed that when you use launch on for ex a Audi S4, you will not hear the farts, that is because they use the inertia in the drivetrain to help acceleration. They to this by simply slamming the cluch closed on the nest gear without cutting or limiting torque, you will get a "lurch" but it will aslo make you accelerate faster. And lastly, its not about ignition timing, it's all about DIRECT INJECTION timing, the nice crackling sound you hear that you call farts are only possible on direct injection engines. This is why older cars cant really produce this noise. What happens is that the direct injection timing is retarded and basically shoot a very small amount of fuel info the cylinder while the exhaust valve is open, making a nice small pop in the exhaust when it self ignites. Bangs from retarded ignition and/or Ignition cut on regular port injected engines are significantly louder, and much more violent in nature since its basically fires of a full cylinder worth of air and fuel after its been compressed. There is no way to regulate the amount of bang like in the DI systems Also, stop referring to these sounds as DSG farts, they are called direct injection exhaust crackle

Let me first start to make you clear that not only dsg or dual clutch cars make those farts. I have a bmw 328i f30 with the 8hp zf gearbox and it farts even louder than those golf's. My car is no dual clutch and yet it shifts very quick and makes loud farts. Launch control as the same, it doesn't fart anymore. Instead of calling it dsg fart, we should call it dct fart.

I sold my mk7.5 golf r and bought a new 5f cupra 290 and it’s fitted with the dreaded gpf , the R is obviously considerably faster from launch with the dsg7 and had the dsg bang but the cupra pretty easily gap’s the R everywhere else from 2nd gear,! But the cupra dsg7 has what id describe as a thud and not a bang on upshifts, I’ve got to say it does detract from the experience, although as the miles go on and ive nearly 3000 now the gpf equipped cupra is getting louder and starting to burble and bang on the over run but nothing like the 300 did. As the saying goes you don’t know what you’re missing till it’s got and that’s definitely my view. Good explanation thanks.👍

Our 2017 Macan 2.0 makes this sound too. We love it. The PDK transmission is the reason.

I love DSG farts, but unfortunately they're no longer heard in more recent models fitted with an OPF - it's more like a "pop" now...

At first I thought it sounded to artificial, like trying to imitatie a carb car from the 60's/70's. Or screwing a sparkplug in the exhaust pipe. But now I know the reason and its pure technical and not a fake attention getter. I dig it :)

I test drove a used S3 and was hearing this... thought something was wrong. Glad it's normal! I'm considering getting the car because holy crap it's nice...and I've been missing the feel of a turbo AWD vehicle since letting go of my old STi.

I have a 2012 Passat 3.6 with a 6 gear dsg and I gotta say damn the dsg farts mixed with the incredible sound of the 3.6 is amazing sounding to me

I thought those "farts" were because of the turbo's wastegate opening at high rpms, releasing a whole bunch of pressurized exhaust gases into the exhaust. I have a BMW and it does this too without a DSG transmission...
