Partly i was wrong. She was born in China (1989). Studied in Peking. Went to Canada, 14 years old. Afterwards came to New York (2008) to complete her study. Considered now as one of the best in the world.

Further, as a pianist myself, I can say her performances are very good; some things one may not like but her ability and standard of performance are almost benchmarks. Regarding her "lack of knowledge of European culture" , are you saying it is a prerequisite to producing great music? Added to which she is an extensive reader of European culture and philosophy in addition to having studied it at her American and Canadian universities and her ongoing education by going to European art exhibitions. I'm not even a fan per se, but I must stand by what is true and give her what is her due. She is remarkable. Her clothing choices are peculiar at times but she's not there for her clothing but for her music.

@@mariodisarli1022 thanks for that. Just remember Yuja Wang was quite well known and doing well before she started to dress this way. Her big break was substituting for Argerich, not so? That says a lot. She does play remarkably well. I prefer her over Trifonov (just compare their Petrushka readings). I like Yuja. I respect Trifonov. But there are so many good ones around these days: Yeol Eum Son, Blechacz, Lisiecki,,, so many who are excelling.

@@republiccooper Trifonov is outstanding when playing certain pieces, notably some Chopin. However, I find his body language very off putting, and he has nothing like the breadth of Yuja's repertoire. There is a good chance Yuja will end up recognised as the greatest pianist of the first half of the 21st century. Yuja's playing of the Tchaikovsky 1 when substituting for Argerich was a triumph. However, for me, she had truly arrived as a superstar in her early performances with the great Claudio Abbado who recognised her talent and pushed her to take the lead in their performances together. At that time, too, she was still a shy, demurely dressed young woman.

The thing you have to realize about Jazz is that it is somewhat unrepeatable. The same musicians may play a tune in a similar way but each time is unique. I know there are reinterpretations in Classical, but if some Jazz musicians today tried to exactly repeat a Miles Davis/John Coltrane performance, they’d be booed off the stage. Improvisation vs the printed page - they are apples and oranges. Me? I love both!

You clearly don't know much about western classical music. You've just, in one sweeping statement, dismissed the piano music of Debussy. You've probably never listened to the piano music of Schoenberg, either, which is full of delightful deviations from the more predictable paths of diatonicism. I'll agree with you on the high heels, though. They never look good, on anyone.

Towards the end of the 19 century classical music reached a peak of perfection that could not be surpassed so the only avenue left was deviation from a standard which has frequently resulted in horrendous dischordant NOISE. The same argument applies to cosmology which has taken refuge in FAITH based mathematical incoherence that violates well established principles. If SCIENCE (?) can do such things then it is certain that ART will.!!!***!!!

@@divvy1400yam600 We're not going to have an argument, because I can see we agree on many things.... 1- High heels suck. 2- The current state of cosmology, and a lot of Einstein, for that matter, is JUNK. 3- I'll correct you here, but it was the early 20th century, with Mahler and Debussy at the height of their creative work, when that apogee was reached. 4- I don't like the work of Prokofiev, Bartok or Berg, either. Actually, I don't like a lot of Yuja Wang's repertoire, either. But, if you search KZfaq for her Schubert-Liszt transcription live performance, you will be impressed, I'm sure. But, you keep mentioning Chinese music. Have you considered Japanese classical music? It is of great beauty, with a sensibility, philosophical and structural foundation far removed from Western concepts. You may be more of a traditionalist, and I can't change that, but I find some of the music of Schoenberg and Webern refreshing in a similar way, because it breaks free, totally, from C19th musical sensibilities. Plus, the 3rd and 4th quartets of Schoenberg I find both both intellectually and musically absolutely brilliant and enjoyable. But that doesn't mean I like all of Schoenberg. We can pick and choose. As for Debussy, wih his explorations of rich harmonies, and use of the pentatonic scale, he was conscientiously moving away from diatonicism. If you can find recordings of Walter Gieseking playing Debussy's Images for piano, you will hear the best. It is magical.

@@divvy1400yam600 As for the Schoenberg, I love this work, but the recording I have, with Paul Jacobs on piano, is a fair bit slower, and more lyrical than this interpretation. As for other music, favourites of mine are the string quartets of Mozart and Shostakovich, Wagner's Ring, and the works of Mahler. Schoenberg and Webern's musical and philosophical authenticity I do not question, but in recent times I have become very sceptical about a lot of C20th music, because lyricism has been replaced with academicism, and the quest for a "style" that ticks the right boxes with the critics, if you know what I mean. But contemporary composition can still be musical, and lyrical, and genuine, without being diatonic. Classical Japanese and Korean music achieve that balance, although in a completely different cultural context.

@@russellparratt9859 The only reason I mentioned 'Chinese '(and I could have said Korean or Japanese) is because their music intervals are different from what are in practice Europe's and hence they are more attuned to the discord that has, except for experts, FAILED to develop IN Europe. Since the appeal of music is emotional and not academic I think without doubt the experts should be ignored. Same wth Brexit ! Eastern music however lacks the only instrument capable of having a solo identity and that is THE PIANO, Isn't it wonderful to listen to the Eastern lady pianists effervescing over the beautiful traditional classical repertoire. By and large Mahler is for the depressed who wish to commit suicide and Wagner for the impulsive demented elated. Both did manage to create some beauiful sounds ! By the way if you really do like the direction that modern music has taken (no other way really) so be it but dont expect many followers.Time may change things but IMO it will be bloodie long tme. Expect Islamic concoctions by then !
