19:03 III. Allegro ma non troppo
Whenever Claudio Abbado conducts the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, music lovers are in for a very special event. Such was the case in the summer of 2009 when the charismatic Italian conductor opened Lucerne's tradition-rich Festival with a concert featuring Mahler's First Symphony and Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. In 2003 Abbado, together with Artistic and Executive Director Michael Haefliger, founded the orchestra, which consists of internationally renowned soloists and chamber musicians - just as did its model, the elite body of musicians that Arturo Toscanini gathered around hirn at the Festival's founding in 1938. lt was with this first-class ensemble that Abbado offered a vividly inspired interpretation of the Mahler. In truth - as the audience's response demonstrated - it left nothing to be desired. The twenty-two-year-old Chinese Pianist Yuja Wang likewise earned enthusiastic applause for her account of the Prokofiev Concerto, which she played with character and nuanced expression.
The theme of nature served es the guiding thread for all the programming choices during the summer of 2009 - a theme with obvious relevance for the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, which is held amid one of the most beautitul landscapes of Europe: its concerts incIude unforgettable views of Lake Lucerne and Alpine panoramas. This theme, es it happens, has eminent musical significance es well: 'Like a sound of nature' is the direction Mahler inscribed at the very beginning of the First Symphony.

This is 22 years old Yuja Wang´s superb interpretation of Prokofiev´s 3rd Piano Concerto. Yuja had first met Maestro Abbado in Juni 2008 in Paris. In an interview with China's television in September 2012, Yuja tells of the meeting that led to the performance to be seen now in the video: "In Juni 2008 I was in Paris to replace pianist Murray Perahia. After the concert, my acquaintance took me to Claudio Abbado´s birthday. He introduced me to Abbado and asked if Abbado wanted to listen to a fresh CD from a talented young pianist. Abbado said, ´We may listen to it now for five minutes.´ He, however, listened to the whole track , which was Liszt's B minor Sonata, until the end (32 minutes). After that, Abbado said, ´I want to invite her to play at the opening ceremony of my Lucerne Music Festival.´ Yuja then played Prokofiev´s 3rd Piano Concerto with Abbado at the Lucerne Music Festival in August 2009 and performed many times with Abbado until his death in January 2014.

@timothybolshaw
@timothybolshaw 7 жыл бұрын
+darren motise I agree with +Beenet Markel about Abbado. You tend to lose sight of his contribution because of his lack of ego. He inspired musicians rather than dictating to them. This was especially true of the young Yuja Wang. He recognized her mature musical intelligence (even at such a young age) and encouraged Yuja to express herself freely, something I doubt she would have had the nerve to do with most distinguished conductors. Claudio's genius here is his ability to listen to what Yuja is trying to achieve and transmit to the orchestra what they should be doing to follow Yuja's lead. It is difficult to think of another conductor able to do this as skillfully, and the result is an outstanding performance by all concerned. Abbado was probably Yuja's favorite conductor, and she was devastated to learn of his passing. On the audience reaction, I do not think they were unappreciative. The Swiss are not as demonstrative as, say, the Americans. By all accounts, the reviews of the performance were uniformly extremely positive.

We can all have our favourite performances of this piece. For me, Yuja's talent is huge and as she matures she will bring so much more to pieces like this. But let's not criticise what she chooses to wear, shall we? She's a remarkable talent, as this performance shows (with the great and much lamented CA at the helm), and we should be celebrating this. Those who don't like skimpy dresses should look away and listen to how much she brings to the music. Brava, Yuja!

@@robertocollo2890 Exactly. Claudio knew the capabilities of musicians, and how to get the best out of them. He totally respected Yuja's insights into the music. He knew the way to the best performance was to push the young and insecure Yuja into taking the lead, and interpreting the piece as she felt it. He relegated his role to understanding what Yuja was trying to achieve, and transmitting that to the orchestra. The orchestra responded. Claudio was definitive proof that telepathy to a degree exists. It was the combination of Yuja's insights and superb piano skills, Claudio's genius as a conductor, and Claudio's ability to subjugate his ego in the pursuit of the best possible performance that led to this result.

Daniel Rios -- Of course, you are correct. BUT people will differ and argue a lot with each other, when judging and comparing a pianist's performance (interpretation, expression, depth, spirit and errors). OTOH, where legs are concerned, EVERYONE will agree that Ms Wang has a great set of legs. The bottomline is that I will admit that I am not an expert (or professional) critic of a pianist's performance, but I am an expert in judging her legs.

I studied this piece in a music class in Vienna in 1974, and then watched the live performance a week later. Ms. Wang was phenomenal, the music is fabulous. Bravo. Shame on the audience! They obviously don't appreciate greatness.

I remember watching on KZfaq Ms Kyung Wha Chung playing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto in Dublin in 1972 when she was 23-24. That was probably her most magnificent performance of this concert if not the most magnificent among of all violinists. Yet the audience only gave her a lukewarm applause. On this performance, Ms Wang was only 22-23, just about in the same age as Ms Chung at the time.

There is nothing YuJa does that doesn't thrill me. As for others, the Japanese have a saying, "Ten people, ten colors". Someone else's opinion can't deplete any of the joy i have watching YuJa play, or talk.

Truly marvelous pianism.Her personality - wedded to this composer's music, evokes many visions for me - some of historical events,some of personal experience...I plan to return many times to this performance. On another topic,I find the intrusion of ads insulting personally, and degrading to the performance- and particularly, a performance of this magnitude! I guess the positive that comes out of this, is that I resolve with each intrusion to purchase fewer and fewer "things." Such music making as this galvanizes the conviction...

This gal is the "treasure of the 21st century". May God and his angels always watch over her---and guide her footsteps [Jeremiah 10:23 & Isaiah 54:13]. It was a divine power that created a soul like hers!
