I am literally broken hearted. My future shubunkin goldfish brood were taken by a heron at my mom's house. I generally keep most of my best fish from the previous year's spawn there and have been doing that for a long time.
A Heron took a few of my koi and goldfish from my place but I didn't think it had taken my mom's
I looked for weeks but couldn't find a one.
I was devastated
In this video I take you through what happened and what I have done to prevent more of it here

I've heard of using the plastic heron decoys. Your mom may be ok with that. I have had issues with raccoons but not heron. My pond is more than 18 inches deep all around the edge except for the plant shelf in the corner. This seems to help. So sorry about the fish. ❤

My neighbor who just put in a new pond had a really nice Heron decoy out there and it came in and $8 fish and I know it was just put there a few days before the Heron got there so it's not like she hadn't moved it around yet cuz it's brand new but it came in an $8 fish. Since then she bought a alligator replica to go in the pond. Couple other people are using those I don't know

Try another approach, worked for me. Instead of putting fishing line over the water put thin garden wire over the pond and surrounding area at about 8 feet high. Garden wire is easier to see than fishing line, but as it is over head height it is not obtrusive when looking at the pond. Herons should stay away as the do not like fishing under anything that will impede their escape if they want to make a quick exit. Herons hunt in the open, not under trees. Hope this works. Love the channel, I am a koi, fancy goldfish and barb fan.

Thanks! I really appreciate you watching and commenting. As for the Nets on my property Jesus, the ponds are pretty big to put netting over but I have it over my smaller breeding ponds that you didn't see on camera. I thought I was pretty secure in the way I had had the fencing around the pond. Being that herons have to walk into water, they don't land in it but they found a way to get past. So they're a smart bird and a protected bird

So sorry to hear about your loss. Once herons find an easy food source they will continue to come back until either the food runs out or they can no longer access the fish. Although the fishing line may not look pretty hopefully it deter the heron and cause it to move elsewhere. Hopefully the remaining shubs at your mothers pond will survive and do well.

Hi Ken, I wish I could use your method but unfortunately I can't and you're right. Once they find an easy meal I think I'm back. No they hadn't come back to mine in years since the last one got hung up on some fishing line and I guess I was taking my chances. Not putting any up recently but I paid the price and lost two good fish but I had never thought of them going to my mother's thing that was up against the house and I didn't think they'd be able to see it with all the water lilies. But now that I think about it, I trim back a tree and it was probably more visible. Plus they'd taking all the fish out of my neighbors Pond too. So the buffet dinner Belle was ringing

Im so sorry Chris. Glad a few survived at your moms pond. There's no way I can put string around my front pond, that's why i dye it. I can't see my fush all summer, but neither can the herons. Kinda defeats the ourpose of having beautiful fish, but its all i can do. I know the sunsail on the back ponds hide the koi from the herons to see, plus they keep the ponds cooler in the heat if the summer days. Maybe your mom would be okay with a small sunsail up high to block the heron's view? Hopefully they will stay away, whatever your mom decides. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. ❤

Unfortunately, it is the circle of life. The trick is to dig the pond to 3-4 feet deep with steep sides. The heron will not be able to stand in the pond and feast. They have babies this time of year. One of my ponds I list a few to herons. Dig the pond deeper than you think then dig it deeper. Ensure that there are fish caves so that they will hide when danger comes. I have not lost any fish to herons since we implemented those changes. I understand your pain! I lost a pond filled with koi when river otters found my pond. Circle of life is what I tell myself. I now have new fish who hide in their caves when threats appear.

😢 Very sad to hear about your fish losses,… herons are effective predators. Fishing line can work, adding reflective tape or tinfoil to the line helps, herons are not fond of ‘shiny’ things. At your Moms place you could use decorative grazing balls or wind whirly-gigs. A very good deterrent are alligator decoys, natural predator of the heron. They are smart birds tho so moving the decoy around is a must. As to feeding the Shubs at your Moms place,… sinking food is an option to keep them in good health. Hugs to you, feel that pain my friend 🫶

My neighbor put in a new pond to replace her old one and put a really nice decoy there. But that here and ate all her fish every last one of them. So as far as Heron decoys, I'm not sold on them. Other people swear by large alligator decoys. We'll see if I have to get one or not, but if you don't keep moving them, the herons will come in. They're a smart bugger

Hi Susan, so glad you watched and commented. As for them not eating the water lilies, I've never had a problem with those eating the lilies at all. Obviously the bigger they are they will nibble at the roots but the plant itself they're fine. My koi pants are full of water lilies. Koi will dig out The Roots to get at the tender roots, but they won't bother with the leaves themselves. They're much too tough and leathery. I've never had a problem with that. If you want your lilies to survive, put them in a case oil in a pot, then put gravel and then put some rocks. That'll prevent your goldfish from getting to those soft roots. Hope that helps. Susan, thanks so much. All the bad plan

Thanks a lot Patty. Yeah hopefully the ones that did breed a couple of eggs will survive the parents eating them. And who knows, there might be a diamond in the rough there. I'm not holding my breath though, but it's still good to see the couple survived. Been back several times. Obviously to feed but I still haven't seen them since and I know they're in there. They're just three or four of them I think. Oh well. Live and learn

Sorry my friend that really sucks. My Uncle who has passed he keep koi ponds. He had issues like that and also snakes and raccoons getting his koi. So he dug the ponds much deeper and all the edges were over hanging to allow fish to hide.. Hopefully you won't have any more predators come around

Yeah, there's only a couple danger areas in my ponds because they're predominantly deep and straight down but they were still able to catch two of my fish so that's why I put the stringing or the fishing line up. As for my mom's Pond, it's very shallow they can get in and it'd be just like shooting fish in a barrel literally. Thanks again, Scott

Wow. I'm very sorry to see this devastation. I have not experienced great loss by herons but I have by racoons. I awoke early morning on my birthday to find a demolished sushi bar, all you can eat koi and goldfish. This was the last devastation prior to my bigger pond install. I hope with new measures in place, they learn that it's no longer a feasible option based on opportunity. All the best and sympathies my friend.

Hi pal, that would not be a good way to start your birthday to wake up to that. I've had raccoons around but because my edges are straight down and my ponds are relatively deep, I've never had a problem with them. I thought I had the problem looked after with my fencing and I didn't think that they could get into any spots but I was wrong. They were able to take two of my fish and all of my neighbors fish every last one even though she had a hair and decoy but her Pond was shallow and they could walk in and just well. You like shooting fish in a barrel. Same with that my mom's but she has lots of water lilies I put in there. Joe, there's ample places to hide but they are a patient bird

@@stubbsaquatics6080 hopefully with the new barley treatment and improved water clarity. It may increase visibility for predators but will certainly improve for the fish as well. Unless it's a diving predator, they can see plenty very far away. My fish can see me from my deck roughly 20 feet away no problem. Look forward to your updates on the matter when you have time to trial. Take care bud and all the best!

Trail camera or two to see where the intruder comes in to secure more. Sensors that make dog sounds. Colored or Clear "blanket" or fabric) maybe not plastic?) on surface of water cut to fit in certain areas. Reddit can sometimes offer advice on the advice thread. Also, I think your fishing line needs to be in some cases very low pound test.

I knew they were landing on my roof then jumping down on to my deck .. they would walk around looking for a spot to hunt from.. I thought I had all those spots covered. At least in my house they found a way in. At my mom's it's a wide open and she doesn't want me to cover it up. Honestly the only way is to fully enclose the area. There's just really no way to stop a heron and personally it's cruel as hell to keep fish in a space to simply be eaten, when in the wild they'd either not have the issue or would have deep enough water and cover to escape. It's like leaving loads of mice in a room with a farm cat and expecting the mice not to be eaten or stressed. It's a shame but hardly the birds fault, he's just after some fish. A friend rescued 2 huge goldys from someone who's father had apparently neglected them, they arrived in a tank so small they couldn't turn and in filthy water you couldnt even see into and they werent even fully covered by the water, lifting their heads slightly to gasp for air. They loved her pond, she gave loads of hiding places, pond plants and shelves, massive plant pots, wire across the pond edge, camera and alert ⚠️ that also caused large flashes to go off which had previously scared it off... Stood in the center of the pond and ate BOTH the day after. They had just 24 hours of freedom and nice care and then.. :( I love birds, I've always really loved the heron. That, however, even broke my heart. A large walk in cover or shed adapted for fish welfare and a pond or large tank in there would be best. Otherwise this guys just gonna take everything. I think the cruelest thing I've heard from people is ' I'd rather have a nice looking garden ' than care for the fishes safety. If that's the case then don't have them. No different than 'im abandoning the dog outside to die, because he chews the house and it looks bad'. So sorry this happened to you sir, they looked gorgeous :( once the bird knows they're there, it's too late for open ponds. Also my friends pond was deep, he didn't care he just stood in the water anyway.

Thanks all very much for commenting time abandoned. It's always good to get at someone else's perspective. I appreciate your very well thought out and detailed explanation. I have been keeping koi and goldfish outside for most of my life This is not the first time I Have encountered herons. It's been several years since I had a problem with them and I used a fishing line method. Since then I put up fencing and a row both to keep them out and to ensure the safety of my grandchildren when they're here. I do love nature in all its forms including the frogs that inhabit my ponds and even the occasional turtle that drops by. I thoroughly enjoy watching nature at its fullest, including all the birds that my pond brings in. Most of them are a joy There is a bird sanctuary and a conservationary area close by and there are a lot of herons. I know they're only looking for food, especially this time of year to feed their young. Mccoy stay outside all year round but my goldfish I bring in because their ponds are shallower. I've been doing that for decades now. They grow much better. Healthier and color up when they're outside in a natural environment rather than a stair aisle fish tank, which I tend to think is cruel to be kept in a small area. Again, I really appreciate you watching commenting on my video. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you again

@@stubbsaquatics6080 just to add I didn't mean to sound overly harsh, I meant it as a personal opinion after seeing so many struggle with it and not to try hate on you or your mam specifically or anything like that. I'm just in a local group and the herons around here seem to have wiped out many many ponds and all I see are all these attempts to protect ponds and it never ever works long term. I thought it heart warming that you'd hoped to try get her in the garden to feed them and relax. It was sweet of you. Not sure your meaning on the fish stair aisle, I did mention 'adapted' to fish. You can get glass for example that allows uv / sunlight in properly and by no means did I mean a tiny tub or shed. You're lucky to get turtles ^-^ & the frogs are always fun to spot. I'm glad you bring them indoors sometimes to, most don't or don't think to have a safe place for them in an emergency sadly 👍🏻
