In this video I walk you through a day in my life as an indie game developer who also manages the responsibilities of having a full time job as a software engineer. I show how I make time for everything, including spending time with loved ones, playing sports, and having some time to just chill.

Hey there! Wanted to address a comment I've been seeing recently related to my sleep schedule. Don't worry, I do NOT sleep from midnight to 5am every day. I only have volleyball one night a week, and I sleep in the morning after if it's a late game. I'm almost always in bed asleep by 10pm or earlier every day, giving me at least 7 hours of sleep. Getting this much sleep is VERY important to me, both for my physical and mental well being. I definitely don't advocate trying to make 5 hours / night work - give your body the rest it needs to recover! Thanks for watching!

@gamesmaker1

i guess it depends, i have my 24" monitor at an arms lenght away from me, eye leveled with the top bezel. What's important is that your neck stays in a fairly ergonomic posture. Here's a video explaining what i mean exactly: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMuVZKaIzsy1hJs.html

I went to college for computer programming, learned C#, Java, HTML5/CSS, JavaScript. My final project in college ended up being a first person shooter, sort of like Nazi zombies in unity. After college, I realized there wasn't much of anything to apply for anywhere near my area so I was basically forced to get my CDL and drive a truck if I wanted to survive financially... Now 3 years later I'm starting to get the itch to get back into programming and try to make a fully featured game. Decided on unreal, although I'm finding it tough to balance my time. With working 80-110 hours/week at my main job, balancing a wife/kid it's not easy but I'm determined to get it done so I can get out of this field I hate. It's practically sucking my life away with how much I have to work! Thanks for the inspiration man, I'm just going to keep fighting to get there.

Keep at it. Even when you feel like you can’t do both and coding isn’t worth it don’t quit. The hard work only pays off if you continue to keep working at it plus if you hate your current job then their is really no reason to force yourself to do it just to put food on the table. Being a provider is more then just a paycheck your personal happiness matters also. Anyway youv got the coding this time around wish you the best.
@kekistanihelpdesk8508
@kekistanihelpdesk8508 4 жыл бұрын
I was in a similar situation but self taught so I had no qualifications so even fewer people wanted me as a coder. After years working in noisy smelly factorys I took a huge pay cut to get an entry level position. It wasnt all coding it was a mixture of IT support roles. 2 years on my pay is now higher than before I took the plunge and I'm doing the things I want to do. Nicer environment. Nicer people. Best decision I ever made. Whatever sacrifices you have to make just do it. You are just wasting years that you will regret looking back. Don't wait too long and be humble in the beginning. Because those courses will never match the quality of work experience, you will be an amateur on your first day even if you have a computer science degree.

I don't know if this is still your routine three years later, but I have to say it seems like a very good routine. Your time to get up and start your game dev is for me the time I almost have to leave for work (I work from 6AM till noon). I'm still trying to find a balance between my physical job (as in physical work), game dev, writing my books (and other things that have to do with world building 😁) and relaxation 😁😁 But I'll get there. It's interesting to see how other indie developers do this! Thanks for sharing your experiences 😀😀

I know this is a couple of months old, but you can use the Mathf.Clamp function to limit the player's movements (it will take some calculations, but you can confine the player to the current screen)

Hey .. I like the videos and just wanted to point something out. Its really important I've been seeing the same seating position of yours in quite a few videos. I really suggest you to put your monitor high enough to level your eyes horizontally rather than bending your upper body down to look at the monitor. I did the same for a lot of time. It results in a rounded back which isn't really good looking. Since you've also mentioned you sit at desk all day long , it would really be beneficial in the long run Cheers :)

This man has an amazing lifestyle, I’m currently trying to develop my own game, but still being in high school I rarely have time. Aside from that I don’t want to be stuck at my desk via school and home all day, I usually get roughly 6 hours to myself a weekday which I sadly spend doing the same things, Homework, code (still a beginner) and watching TV. I hope to make my lifestyle a little more healthy.

I developed my last game in the nighttime after school, it was a birthdaypresent and had to be done in 2 days, therefore I did not more than 3 hours a day..
