Yes I thought so too. Despite the compromises necessary, I also think I've achieved that quite well in this design.

Great job squeezing in that long list of customer want/needs. Final trackplan still has a good amount of breathing room. Good stuff!!

That's an impressive 10x10 setup. I have almost the same space available (except the couch is not needed and planning to run down that wall 13 feet while the other is at 10. You've given me so many more ideas!!! Now, I need to find the time ;) Truly impressive what you've done with an L design rather than U.

I really like these track planning videos! Also, it is great to see how much space I am going to need once I can design my own n scale layout.
@mpeterll

Space requirements for a layout:- N-scale = 2-car-garage, HO-scale = basement, O-scale = aircraft hangar. Just kidding :-) I think this plan proves that you don't need a huge space. In fact, if the entire room had been available, it could all have been built on a single scenic deck.

It seems an awful lot crammed into a very small area. Brilliant job of giving the client all that he wants. You can’t tell a client no I suppose.

Well done Peter. Like any "designer" should do, you've outlined your "process" beautifully in that first letter so there shouldn't be any misunderstandings. I'd love to see that questionnaire :)
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
So would most of my competitors like to see the design questionnaire, which is the main reason why I don't sent it out until after I've received a down-payment. I can't prevent a competing designer from posing as a potential customer just to get a copy of the questionnaire, but at least this way he will have to pay for it. I suspect that at least one other designer has already done exactly that.

You have so much patience Peter, I would have suggested trading the couch for a smaller love seat..
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
Why? It wasn't in the way. Even if both the couch and the cabinet were eliminated entirely, it wouldn't have made a lot of difference to the plan.

Hi Peter, great design accompanied by a wonderful explanation of the design considerations and objectives. Having multi-deck scenic sections isn't so common here in Europe, normally don't go further than a staging (fiddle) yard deck and a scenic deck with the trackwork there at different heights as required. Therefore interested to know what the vertical distance is between the 2 scenic decks on this project and the gradients required on the helixes to connect them?
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
That depends on circumstances, but in most cases, I aim for about 20" between levels, thus giving about 16" of airspace for viewing lower decks. For a purely staging level, less is okay provided the reach-in distance isn't too great.

Very interesting Peter. I have an 11' x 13' space but can't conceive a multi level layout due to wanting to run 37 car coal drags and the grades worry me with engine slip. Design looks great and I hope you get commissioned to build it.

I'm always impressed with what you're able to put together. How much of your track planning is experience-based versus resource-based? In other words, how often do you "wing it" and how often do you go from photos, etc?
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
Most is experience-based; having a good idea of what works and what doesn't through decades of operating experience. For contemporary layouts based on a specific prototype, I look at the satellite photos on google-maps in order to get the feel of the prototype, but even here, what works for the prototype in a mile-long space with 6 trains per day doesn't necessarily work for an operational model in a 20' space and 6 trains per hour.

As usual I have a few questions about this project. It's a very impressive design for a 10' x 10' layout! My questions involve construction. This is a very intricate build. Is this something you are going to take on or is this up to the customer to build? If it is up to the customer, is he/she up to the challenge? Is this the customer's first layout, etc.? Is the build something you discussed with the customer (I'm sure you did, I'm just curious!)? Thanks as always for sharing your experiences.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
Do not worry. I ask every customer about his skill level in various aspects of layout construction before I start the design process. In this case, he even told me right at the start that he was expecting a multi-deck design with a helix. When I get a customer with lower skill levels, I keep the design simpler.

Very nice I like it!! I wish I could design a layout for my N scale but not sure where to start. I have a oval approximately 68inch by 96inch and wanna make a helix going up on one end around the lolly collum/ support post and around my hobby room/man cave which is 14’6x15’9inches with a double main around the room.

I think you might have addressed this in an earlier video but how do you (or a customer) go about translating a design into a physical layout? Especially with a complex and compact design like this it's crucial to lay out everything as accurately as possible. Can you print out full size templates?
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have the hardware to print out plans full-size, but I know a guy who does. You may have seen one of those templates in use on a build I did last year.

What's the smallest radius for both a double and single track helix
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
There's no fixed answer. There are a lot of factors to consider but in most cases bigger is better. The bigger the radius, the longer each lap and the more separation you can have with the same grade. This is particularly critical in N-scale where it is difficult to get sufficient finger clearance between laps. On this layout, the inner track is 16" radius, which gives about 100" per lap (great for easy calculations). So at 2.5%, there is 2.5" separation (railhead to railhead).
