This is a custom layout design for a client in Alabama.
If you want more information about my custom track-planning service, please contact me through my website: superiormodelrailroads.com
The benchwork is designed to fit into the company trailer without damaging the trackwork (it’s tight but it fits - scenery is scheduled to be done on-site).
Overall layout size is approximately 15’ x 21’, in N-scale, designed using 3rd-plan-it CAD software.
Grid squares for most of the screenshots are 6” to allow me to better associate the plan with the HO-scale distances I’m more used to.
Track components are all from the code-80 PECO insulfrog range.
Minimum mainline radius is 22” (14” on the logging line)
All curves of less than 36” radius have 10” easements

Most of my custom layout designs are done with no expectation of building the layout for the customer. That is perfectly okay. If you are interested in a custom design or any other of my ervices, please contact me through my website superiormodelrailroads.com

that plan is great like how you have it seen one in the office building when I was younger was an HO layout too did a year on work experience at that place he had 50 people working there and it did become a hobby for the whole office to take part in building it the layout got so big on that floor they had to move the office to and other floor to get work done I heard the layout was sold to someone else now and still is operational I was told the first owner passed away

Re the stub ended intermodal yard, no big deal. The BNSF North Bay Calif facility, a key western destination for UPS intermodal shooters, has a couple of through tracks. BNSF mostly seems to back the train in rather than run-through. It's likely either safer or easier for the crew to switch that way. In any case, there are all combinations of stub and through intermodal yards along with run-through and back in switching. Cheers!

That potential client's specifications were very demanding. Given the quality of your modelling, he may be sorry he went for the low bid! ....something for future potential clients to think about.

To those of you who were hoping to watch me build this layout, I'm sorry to disappoint you. My involvement in the project ended yesterday as I was underbid. I did make a last ditch effort to salvage it, but to no avail. That leaves a significant hole in my work schedule over the coming months, so if you are in the market for some custom work, please contact me through my website: superiormodelrailroads.com

I've not used the 3rd Planet software. Does it have a 3D viewing feature like the Anyrail software? If not, have you considered duplicating your layout designs in Anyrail and using the 3D view to give a bigger visual impact when presenting your design to your clients? Using the 3D movie feature you will be able to fly them across the layout and allow them to see the full topology of your design. It really is a stunning feature of the software, and requires no extra effort to use. I have designed a three layer shelf layout with it, including a helix. The 3D view can get a little cluttered when viewing all three layers together, but the software gives you the ability to display individual layers so you have a less cluttered view. I then import the Anyrail track layout into the Trainz simulation software. This then gives you another 3D view, but more importantly, it allows you to operate trains on the layout so that you can test the operation and flow of the design. I made a lot of design changes to my layout as a result of using Trainz and the 3D movie feature in Anyrail. If I was a customer, I would really value the ability to "see" and "operate" the layout before awarding a commission.

If it would help, Peter, I could create a KZfaq video of the process I used for my layout. Hope this isn't teaching you to suck eggs.

I also forgot to add that I use the free web version of Sketchup to make a 3D plan of the room, which includes images of the baseboard construction. Again, it has great visual impact for potential clients.

An interesting idea and thank-you for the suggestions. 3pi does have a 3D display mode, and I have used it on occasion. It is certainly not an easy option to use, requiring a LOT more effort than representing everything flat. The landscape color is also a function of its elevation, so for the 2D plan, I simply massage the elevations to whatever gives me the color I want in a particular area - it looks crap when viewed in 3D. With virtually every customer wanting the very lowest pricing possible, I don't see how I can justify spending 5-10x as long on each plan knowing that the most likely scenario in the end is that someone will undercut my price and I'll lose the job anyway. I already made far less than minimum wage on that plan as it is.

@@mpeterll yes, I guess that's business reality . What I described may be OK for us hobbyists but not practical for a commercial enterprise where time is money. It's one thing selling a service to a company, but something very different when you sell to an individual, and it is their money that they will be handing over. They are more likely to accept quality compromises. Good luck with your future commissions. I have no doubt that your reputation is being enhanced by your videos. It would be great if you could find a way of improving the filming, such as lighting and image quality so that we can really see the intricate detail of your work. Really enjoy your channel.

Hello I want to build an N Scale layout and I have two major questions 1 - is there a kit or a plan for building a Helcoil for N Scale 2 - what is the rise and run for up hill slopes Thanks James
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 4 жыл бұрын
1) I'm not sure what you mean by a "Helcoil" 2) Grades vary, but 2% is a pretty normal figure. This means that the rise is 2% of the horizontal distance. Or put another way, the horizontal distance needs to be 50 times the rise. That's approximately 1" rise in every 4-feet traveled.
