🌟 You all asked for a reaction to the All Too Well 10 minute version lyrics, so here it is! 🌟
This All Too Well 10 minute version lyrics reaction was super fun - it was great to see a longer story unfold, and it was my first time reacting to a song from Red (Taylor's Version)! Today, we talk about:
ALLITERATION - using the same consonant sounds at the beginning of consecutive words (ex: [c]asually [c]ruel)
Scene selection - how can we choose scenes that enhance the tone we're going for in our story?
Action & Reflection - a great way to keep your scenes balanced by developing plot vs. character
Figurative language, first person narration, and more

Her repeatedly saying I remember it all too well also shows that she's almost reassuring herself that these things really happened. The other person maybe gaslighted her and told her she was imagining things and it didn't happen that way so she has to constantly reassure herself that it did happen like how she remembers

I never GOT All Too Well until you pointed this out, and now everything is clicking. The little details of the song I always overlooked? They're falling into place like autumn leaves. Like "there we are again in the refrigerator light"... why are they there AGAIN? OH MY GOD. She's ruminating. They're there in the fridge light again because she's playing it again in her head. She's in the back-and-forth process of grief, and she's moving from forgetting about him long enough, to remembering that good moment of dancing in the fridge light, right before the "why I needed to [forget]" part hits again. I knew the "lost in translation" lines were masterpieces but I never connected that her keeping it like an oath and him keeping it like a secret is related to this line. The extended metaphor of being dead? omg "And WE'D swear to remember it" How did I never catch that they both swore to remember it?? And now the betrayal is all the more heartbreaking because she continues to keep the promise (and he broke her like one - because he broke that promise in the first place, she's making a metaphor how he broke her OMG) by remembering, but it's the very thing she remembers all too well that is tearing her apart while he seems so casually cruel and indifferent to it. She's keeping the OATH, but all alone. "Returning half her weight" could also mean she thought he was The One ("You would've been the one if you were a better man") and was the other half of her that completed her, and now she's returning without him - which paints that picture of a young passionate love. This revelation also makes the ending mean so much more to me now. This entire time she's driving the metaphor that he forgot the promise, but last minute she turns the motif into "YOU remember it all too well." It's an accusation and a twist reveal. The fact that he continues to remember it ("you remember it" repeated in the outro like an accusation - and "I remember it, I was there" also repeated like she's trying to convince herself, like you said) but had this indifference the whole time paints the picture of regret - and that ties in with I Bet You Think About Me. WHY DID I NEVER CONNECT ALL THIS

@@shar3859 Bestie it happens to all of us. The lyrics will click all of a sudden and then everything you realise is connected and all the little details you offhandledly ignored start making sense. “Tossing me the car keys “fuck the patriarchy” keychain on the ground”. I always interpreted that as he tossed her the car keys with out paying attention if she’d catch it or not and it ended up landing on the ground. And he had a fuck the patriarchy keychain. So despite his outwardly show of being this sensitive compassionate guy, he’s just another guy, tossing the keys and her and not paying attention if she was able to catch it or not.

It can also be a metaphor for their relationship like he's doing the act of letting her take charge but not actually coming from a sincere place. He's just nonchalantly gaslighting her into thinking that she can be in control. Taylor uses the car metaphor a lot to symbolise her standing in the relationships, she is in the passenger seat a lot in her early songs, in Getaway car she switches from passneger to driver.

Yes and because the “fuck the patriarchy” was in quotes it’s assumed that it was written on his keychain which is such a flimsy show of performative feminism. Him tossing her the keys like he’s handing her some control, but missing and having them land at her feet feels so icky.

Great analysis!! I love your reactions! - The "Brooklyn broke my skin and bones" can have 2 meanings: 1-"Brooklyn broke" meaning someone who has money but still dresses and acts like they're broke and 2- His sister lived in Brooklyn and they spent a lot of time there during their relationship. Since Taylor is the writer I like to assume she thought of both lol

A fun exercise might be to compare this with the 5 min version that was released first and react to how the editing of this track changes the feeling of it. In my opinion, when you listen to the 5 min version it comes across more sentimental and wishing to be remembered well by someone that didn't treat you all too well. Whereas, the 10 minute version has a lot more sass and shows the listener more of his flaws.

What i love about the "crumpled up piece of paper" line is that you can see it in many ways. If you write something on a piece of paper, you can't really get it all clean again, so its basically "used up" (which in the context of the paper being Taylor sounds disguting, sorry) or tainted, so no matter what she tried to do, the thing she went through has made its marks on her. And then we have the way of seeing it that if you crumple up a piece of paper, you can't "uncrumple" it, you can try your best to make it somewhat flat and put some eight on it or maybe even use an iron to flatten it out, but the marks that have been made on that paper will remain forever. Love that line
@monimoo88

I also love that she didn’t say she was a piece of ripped up paper lying there because he may have forever changed her by crumpling her but he did not in fact destroy her. It’s always been one of my favorite parts of the song.

The 5 minute version to me feels like telling the story and reflecting on the pain and anger of the relationship, the 10 minute feels more like the real time grieving process of thinking back fondly, then remembering the bad parts, then making yourself angry, the snapping out of it to something fonder, but now it’s tainted and you get pulled down into the anger and sadness and it becomes cyclical. I believe this is the version that must have been written after the phone call and she’s trying to reassure herself that it really did happen how she remembers it because maybe he acted like it didn’t?

Thank you for your reactions!! I learn so much from them. 1) About the "twin flame bruise", She mentioned in State of Grace "Just twin fire signs, four blue eyes". I don't really know much about zodiac signs and stuff, but I do think Taylor and Jake (who the song is presumably about) were both sagittarius and that's a fire sign I think. 2) Also when she says "I was never good at telling jokes" I think that relates back to the song I Bet You Think About Me, where she sings "You laughed at my dreams, rolled your eyes at my jokes". And it also relates to the song Begin Again where she sings "I think it's strange that you think I'm funny cause he never did". 3) Lastly the song The moment I knew is about him not showing up at her 21st birthday party. - I just love how everything is connected in the Taylor Swift universe, especially in the Red album.

in my mind the lyric about the snow falling is the moment that she realized that the relationship was over. Him not showing up to her 21st birthday is referenced both in this song but also in The Moment I Knew, which basically tells us that that day was the moment she knew it was over. Her birthday is december 13 and it could very well be that it started snowing that day. In my mind, snow represents the transition from fall to winter. In all too well she references fall a lot, which tells me that the snow lyric is kind of like her realizing that now that fall is over, so is their relationship. Sorry if this doesn't make sense i just felt the need to rant a little!🫶🏻

also this is quite obvious but fall is generally seen as quite cozy,(sweaters, coffee, blankets, warm colors and so on), while winter is much colder(snow, ice, trees without leaves) so i feel like that also plays in to the loss of warmth and love she felt in the relationship while it was going on, and feeling cold and empty now that the relationship is over. this is also reflected quite well in the film with the use of cold/warm colors!

I always think the "so casually cruel in the name of being honest" line ties back to when he said that if they'd been closer in age maybe the relationship would've been fine. That reason for breaking up with her is so messed up because that is something they cannot change, and also feels like a very convenient reason you know. Then he goes dating young women still, UGH. "Brooklyn Broke" is referencing hipster-style fake poorness. Once you know thos aong is about Jake Gyllenhall you can picture the schlumpy beanies and Army jackets aesthetic so well. 1) “remembering” is a constant theme for her which like. isn’t an uncommon theme in music but it’s like she’s commanding the other person sometimes “capture it, remember it” “say you’ll remember me” “remember when you hit the breaks too soon” “i said remember this moment” “remember when i pulled up” and with this song it’s like she’s begging the other person to remember things the same way that she does bc with this relationship he convinced her it wasn’t as serious as she saw it 2) “YOUR brooklyn broke my skin and bones” i see as i see this town as YOUR town so when i go there i feel broken 3) “twin flame bruise” goes with “twin fire signs” from treacherous - i think they were both sagittarius

I can see a few people have explained the phrase "Brooklyn Broke". On a runaway train of thought from that line, Id be interested to see a breakdown of the song "I Bet You Think About Me" which is about the same relationship. There's a few imagery comparisons to All Too Well but instead she's very confidently asserting that she thinks he cant forget about her. Shes also very derisive of his rich, privileged upbringing. Which is why I think the double play on "Brooklyn Broke" (pretending to be poor when you're rich) is a bit of a dig at him.

About the writing progression and how the later parts of the song are more subtle: as far as I know she kind of came up with the 10 minute version on the spot when the situation was happening. My theory is that at the time she used to cut a lot of the cryptic/subtle storytelling parts because in the re-records there’s a lot of that in the vault songs. Maybe she didn’t think people would like them and now she knows we love that actually haha

I definitely agree with other swifties who think the reason she repeats remembering it all too well is because it’s very apparent from other songs about the relationship as well as the short film that he may have been gaslighting her throughout the relationship and it appears that she is trying to reassure herself that what she remembers is what actually happened. It’s always reminded of that scene in the hunger games mockingjay part 1 where katniss is hiding in district 13. She is trying to assure herself that her memory is accurate and sharp and true and repeats a mantra. One interested thing to note is she wrote a few lines ina few different songs on red about how Jake did not find her funny at all. We got the “and I was never good at telling jokes line.” Here in all too well 10. We also got “you laughed at my dreams and rolled your eyes at my jokes.” In I bet you think about me a vault track on red tv. And on begin again from red she says “you throw your head back laughing like a little kid. I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny cause, he never did.”

I don't think the relationship was as on-again, off-again as you suggest it was. When she says things like "here we are again/little town street, refrigerator light, etc., those are memories of her relationship. He comes back after 3 months to try to rekindle it, but the magic ain't there no more.

Hi, I am new to the Swiftiverse but I recognised something throughout this performance. Repetition, mood changes and the emphasis on memories implies PTSD. "All too well" sounds like a flashback indicator and identifying as a soldier, particularly losing weight, implies dire or traumatic circumstances. Anyway, just a notion that offers another interpretation also joy that recovery is advanced and ongoing.

And there we are again…. For me she says it like she is remembering scenes of this past love, cause she remembers it all to well get it? I do not think it is because they broke up that many times, as far as we know he left her and after 3 month asked her to came back but in secret and then they call it quits

I really like how Taylor Swift uses the "*I* remember it all too well" lines to express her sadness and pain from remembering. And then uses the almost identical"*You* remember it all too well" lines to express her rejecting him trying to gaslight her, with him claiming that her memories and/or interpretations at the time were false. She likes to make tiny changes to lines to convey very different meanings and/or to provide tense (future/current/past).

I believe I read somewhere that Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister ( whom this song is about) lived in a Brooklyn home and, Taylor and Jake visited her house where Taylor left her scarf.. When taylor sings the line “ When your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones” it could be a reference or an allusion to how this relationship was destructive to her as it took a toll on her physically and mentally. Physically cuz she lost a significant amount of weight after the break up and mentally because she was always made to feel as if she’s only imagining things and is not very mature cuz she’s younger than him and this is also why the phrase “ I remember it all too well” comes back over and over in the song… not because she’s asking him to reassure her if this is actually happening but, because she’s telling him that No, I remember it all too well, I know it happened, I remember it all too well. I hope it makes sense lol❤

I love what you concluded in the end about the early part of the song vs the middle/end and how they feel like young vs older Taylor. That perfectly expresses the problem I have with this 10 min version. I believe Taylor when she says she spit out 10 minutes of lines when she was first writing it and was probably deeply in pain. I’m sure some of those thoughts are here. But I don’t believe for one second that these are the original lines exactly as written at the time. There is so much reflection and much of it with the benefit of wisdom and time. She has taken the original song, which is heartbreaking but wistful perfection, and turned into something much more angry and regretful. It’s impressive to make a longer song sound fresh and I applaud her for it. But it will never replace the succinct brilliance of the first version.

I love to listen to different people reacting to Taylor‘s music. However, I think doing research and understanding more about Taylor would give her a grasp about the lyrics. There would be a lot of these misconceptions cleared up! This was not a give-and-take relationship between her and him. This was her giving and him taking, Period! I will listen to you again, and I’m hoping that we have a better grasp of Taylor by then ✌️

Thanks so much! I really like to look at the writing and what it communicates just based on how it's written. That's why I don't always like reading about what I *think* it should mean based on what the original author's intent was, though that's really valuable as well. I like to see if the writing can speak for itself :). But yes, I definitely see your point, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts ^.^

Re: your closing comments about old Taylor vs. new Taylor - I think it would be really interesting to see a comparative analysis of this song vs. the original 5min version from Red. I think you'll find that most of the concrete, "scene-painting" Taylor comes from the 5min track. I'm in the minority of Swifties who prefers the original. I think it's a tighter, more cohesive story and doesn't get as lost in the weeds, both narratively and melodically. I'd be very interested to see if you agree as a professional writer!

"Your Brooklyn" can be tied to several things, she's wanted to live in New York for a long time, but she came from small towns and a country background, so it might have started or intensified when she dated him and walked around there with him. Brooklyn is known as an artsy/indie/cool location, and he "goes to indie concerts every week" he's also extremely rich but chooses(or chose) to be in Brooklyn (as did his sister who had a house there) when he could be in the heart of Manhattan if he wanted to. It speaks a lot about his character and this persona he chooses to put on, of distancing himself from his background, and his money, and being cool and hip, but in the end status still matters to him (I Bet You Think About Me). Imo it's like saying she fell for this "Brooklyn" persona who was artsy and indie and folk, and then he expected her to be a high society wife (an ever lovely jewel) who never complained about anything or wanted anything from him despite his "fuck the patriarchy" keychain, it's all an image he projects or wants to be, but not who he really is. And his persona just like him pretending he wanted a "mature partner" "made her want to die" so that's why his "Brooklyn broke her."

I'm glad that you picked-up on the difference in writing style because I'm convinced this is not the original text. For instance, there's no way in hell she used the word "patriarchy" in 2012. Yes the 10 minutes version existed but she entirely re-wrote some parts of it before releasing it. And I'm not mad about it, but it's ok to point it out.

I don't know if this is intentional at all but I just noticed that she says "you taught me 'bout your past", I've always thought it said "told" and not "taught" and thought it flowed better that way but her using the word "taught" almost implies like an underlying power dynamic of that sort of teacher/student, older/younger, smarter/dumber kind of thing. As I said maybe not intentional but interesting to think about as she later brings up the age difference and his condescension towards her🫶🏻
