Or that she’s lost the weight of him and is now free, because "tolerate it" from Evermore has a line that goes "Gain the weight of you, then lose it”. She references throughout the album how this person made her feel insecure about her music tastes and how she wasn’t 'cool' enough. Example from We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together: “And you would hide away and find your peace of mind with some indie record that’s much cooler than mine" and I Bet You Think About Me (From The Vault): "I bet you think about me when you're out at your cool indie music concerts every week". Also, In The Moment I Knew she delves deeper into her 21st birthday party he didn't show up to. "And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?" - A twin flame is a spiritual belief where one soul is split into two and exists in two bodies, so finding them is literally meeting the other half of your soul. It’s more intense and passionate than a soulmate but can be much more destructive and incredibly toxic. Also, think of it this way: The hottest fire is blue flame. Bruises are also blue. The consequences of such an intense bond burned them and painted them "blue" (which is the color of sadness). It can also be a reference to the song State of Grace from the same album in which she refers to herself and this former love as “twin fire signs, four blue eyes". Both Taylor and JG are a Sagittarius and blue-eyed. Besides Tiny Desk, she sang the original version on Reputation Stadium Tour so you've both heard it. I recommend doing an evolution of the song because it has gone through so many changes. Starting with the original recording on Red, the Grammy's performance in 2013 and the SNL performance in 2021.

This is, indeed, a "Taylor's Version." The lore around ATW was that there was a ten-minute version that had been cut down for the original release of Red. When she re-released she gave us the promised extended version. My favorite note about this song is that it still went to #1 despite the length, beating out the previous longest song to hold that honor, Don McLean's "American Pie." Taylor sent HIM flowers upon beating his record and thanked him for showing her it could be done.

It really helps give some context if you’re unfamiliar with the situation. This song is about Jake Gyllenhaal. They dated for a few months when she was 20 and he was 29. This is Taylor’s Version (as there was never an original 10 minute version recorded- thus being ‘from the vault’) but I think she is trying to mimic her older style of singing to be closer to the original 5 minute version. As you guessed, the ‘3 months in the grave’ refers to them breaking up and then him finally saying three months later that it was love, but it was too late. The ‘twin flame bruise’ is a reference to the fact they are both Sagittarius’s (a fire sign). It also relates back to another song on Red called State of Grace, where she mentions ‘Twin fire signs’. ‘Brooklyn Broke my skin and bones’ is a play on words using the expression ‘Brooklyn Broke’ which is someone who has lots of money but still dresses like they don’t (particularly for the purpose of looking cool or relatable) which definitely applies to Jake’s style.. I’ve always interpreted it as another way of juxtaposing how casual and cool he was about the whole relationship whilst it literally broke her.

I love both versions of this song however the original version is a bit of tighter story line. It also is sadder and seems more poignant where the 10 min version has more of the frustration and anger. I'm a pretty big believer in the concept that the ending is current and wasn't what she originally wrote. In the film version it's a shift in perspective and is told from current Taylor and I think that's what happens in the song as well. I don't mean that as a criticism I would expect her to polish, change or add stuff to vault songs. I mean isn't that the purpose of production?

So I think that the Brooklyn part has to do with the fact that during the time that Taylor and Jake Gyllenhaal dated, they spent a lot of time in Brooklyn (in fact their "famous" paparazzi photo was taken in Brooklyn.) I would assume that something about Brooklyn or Taylor's time spent with Jake in Brooklyn left a painful mark on her and broke her and that's what that line means. The line "I'm a soldier who´s returning half her weight" is similar to the “tolerate it” line that says “gain the weight of you then lose it” as in she’s returning the weight of him and the relationship after the battle of trying to keep it.

They could tell something was wrong, she walked into the booth and just let all this out. 1 take (the very first version) her mom asked the producer something on the lines of “I sure hope you recorded that.”
