For this year's APWH students: don't take any notes at all just watch heimler over and over. That's what I did and I got a 5.

notes: how did china maintain and justify power? confucianism - revived confucianism, which said that society was made of unequal relationships (fathers are greater than sons, kings better than subjects) - confucianism also emphasized filial piety, great respect for your ancestors - song dynasty had neo-confucianism which had elements of daoism and Buddhism - neo-confucianism is an example of continuity from tang and song dynasties - used confucianistic principles to maintain and justify their rule (you had to obey the emperor bc that's how Chinese society works) - women were subordinate in Chinese society, couldn't own property, couldn't remarry - especially harsh is footbinding, making young girls feet smaller - this was used to demonstrate the wealth of their husbands ("I'm so rich that my wife doesn't even work") politics - imperial bureaucracy is system of govt officials who carry out emperor's will - song dynasty had efficient large bureaucracy - to get in, have to pass civil service exam means that it was based on merit, not nepotism influence - Korea was bordering china so they took many of their customs like civil service exam, confucian principles, mistreating women - had to pay tribute to china and prostrate b4 emperor - sinification was mostly upper class though - japan was separated from china by an ocean, wasn't as influenced - took Buddhism, writing system *voluntarily* - Vietnam bordered china, but more resistant to sinification - paid tribute, had civil service exam, chinese literature, buddhism and confucianism - women WAY less oppressed, no footbinding buddhism - four nobles truths: life is suffering, we suffer bc we crave, we stop suffering when we stop craving, eightfold path will stop craving and suffering - eightfold path: principles and practices, have a moral lifestyle and meditate - Theravada buddhism: from sri Lanka, only monks practice, exclusive, escaping the cycle of life and death - mayahana Buddhism: more accessible to everyone, emphasized compassion and loved buddha ❤ - tibetan Buddhism: more mystical, spiritual, chanting, lying prostrate economy - song dynasty economy very strong, trend started in tang - was a result of commercialized economy, Chinese produced more than they needed and sold the rest - used banking practices like paper money, promissory notes, and credit - lots of iron steel used for agriculture and armor - agriculture was booming bc of Champa rice from vietnam - Champa rice: flood- drought resistant, could be harvested twice a year, fed large population and also increased population - grand canal was built used for trade and stuff - magnetic compass, improved junk ships with better sails and rudders

Great information and helpful for students who will be taking AP World. I got a 5 some years back and I hope future students will take this info granted 😀. Some tips for who are taking AP world: • Practice DBQs, SAQs, LEQs as this will help you greatly in the exam. • Pay Attention in class and do the work • Watch these videos, it helps! • Do notes, I didn’t do any personally since I’m a visual learner but notes can help. • Enjoy the class and I wish everyone luck who is taking this class this year.
