I had the pleasure of recording Joey Castillo on drums (Queens of the Stone Age) for about a week at Rancho De La Luna back in 2018. It was a master class in professionalism... When the band would take breaks, he would be sitting with his earbuds in taking notes on the next track we would be working on or on changes the band just made to the current song. He was laser focused the entire time, never complained, was always courteous, and never missed a beat.

I've loved Nate Mendel's bass parts since back when he played with Sunny Day Real Estate. I've never heard a Nate Mendel bass track that was a wrong fit for the song. Not once. He does right by the songs, which is an incredibly important skill for a bassist.
@rome8180
@rome8180 8 ай бұрын
His parts in Foo Fighters are too basic for my tastes. It's funny how whenever someone says "he does right by the song," they're talking about playing simply. Just reinforcing the false idea that parts are right if they're simple and wrong if they're busy. There's no one approach that will work for a song. I can imagine a bass line that is completely different than Nate's or Sean's that would work just as well. It's a matter of taste, not some platonic ideal of what "serves the song."

@thegabaghoul93 it would probably be a bit too complicated but a drum take on drumeo followed by a bass take on sbl and then the drummer and bass player getting together and changing their parts to make a cohesive rhythm section would be great. Or maybe I should just form a band again!

Yep: what cinders302 says. I used to be a very busy musician and was always really focused on what I was creating myself. Whenever I wasn’t busy writing, tracking, playing, gigging, practicing, etc. I just really appreciated silence (and the music in my head).

I think this might be the second time in my life I've heard this song and I attended conservatory for bass performance and played professionally for a little while. There's a whole world of music out there. Your standards aren't everyone else's. I've played at jam sessions with guitarists who have never played a blues before, but then they knew every note to every Randy Rhoads solo or whatever. I find that mind boggling, but that's just the way it is.

At 3:34 he says "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro". Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean that he knows the song beforehand, they _could_ have told him after the first playthrough that it was Foo Fighters and just edited it to look like it was all revealed after the final take, but it does seem a bit odd. Sean Hurley is nonetheless still awesome and an absolute beast and I have no doubt he'd be able to do play this by ear this quickly regardless if he actually does it in this video.
