Love you guys (bass player here, who else would be watching?) but, I gotta say as much respect and admiration I have for your talent (Scott) and really appreciate your site's dedication to all things bass.., but (Scott) - I was blown away by how you were clueless about short-scale basses! I started playing bass in 1966 as a 13yr old. I had only paper-route money then so couldn't afford a (full scale) Fender or Gibson etc, so my 1st bass was a Japanese made bass I bought new for $40 from Woolworth's Dept store. Very unusually for '60s Japanese basses - it was actually a 34" scale, unlike all the rest flooding the US market which were (wait for it...) short-scale. I was clueless about such then but the point being, many of the 1960s bass-players still playing today started off on a ss bass. So, I accept your appologies for dissing ss basses - you are obviously too young... but you need to brush-up on your bass history. (beyond your own era - respectfully so ;) The new wave of ss basses are every bit as good as any other scale basses out there and play & sound just as good. Yes, 'hipsters' gravitate to them, but so do a lot of bass-players. I own and play both - along with a lot of players of all levels. And wait... you don't "get" Jack Bruce??? (this episode is a very surprising insight into Scott Devine) Still love you - but damn, do some deep woodshedding on your bass history! :) My 3rd bass was a new ss 1968 Gibson EB-3 (because of Jack Bruce) which had 2 pu's and a 5-way rotary switch. (like the Epi Jack Cassidy) EB-0 was one 'mud-bucker' pu. These basses were also referred to as SG basses as they had a similar body to the SG guitar. I am entertained by your "British humor" so it's not that - but as I'm watching... Wichita Lineman is my all-time favorite pop song - hands down. No dissing "Wrecking Crew" alum GC please "kick that back Mr Devine". The '60s Teisco EB-200 ("Johnny Paycheck bass") was as long as a Jazz bass, but are 30" ss basses. The current Fender Rascal bass is somewhat referencing that bass as it too is a ss bass that is as long as a Jazz. FTR, it's getting excellent reviews. (under $500) And Mike Watt plays a ss bass - nuff said... (listen to Ian - he'll school you) And as long a bass as in this category - yes, Guild Darkstar pu's rule. The 32" scale (which you had a vid on) Kubicki Ex-Factor does all the "active" sound you'd ever want. Even if there isn't currently a ss active bass that does it all - there will be one eventually.

I love these challanges. A musician putting their own flavour on a piece of music is so interesting listening to. I wonder if an ABBA song would be a challange in this thing. Rutger Gunnarsson was a very creative base player, so I would really like to hear other basist do their thing on a song like One of us or The name of the game. Both with really cool original base lines. Anyway. Cheers.

You guys could easily do a whole video on Lithium. That bass part is a work of genius and there’s some really cool playing in the bridge sections. I’d also recommend that every bass player in the world learns Mr Moustache - it’s a very cool and fun bass part to play and your fretting hand stamina will benefit enormously.

Interesting how a gospel bassist gets to play music from a band that is the absolute opposite. I wonder how "Number of the Beast" would have gone over?
