Of the dozens of effects pedals I have had in my possession over the years there is none better than the stompbox that I’m talking about in this week’s video. Pair it with an Ibanez Gary Willis signature bass and you have a tone that you could build a career on!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

I bought the EHX Freeze because of that previous video you made on the merits and utility of the pedal. Not only good for bass guitar but for electric guitar as well. I freeze a chord and explore what scale notes and passing notes work well over it. This pedal plus a looper pedal are my practice buddies. Cheers!

I have the Electro-Harmonix Super Ego, which is their tricked out sustain pedal, and it's great for creating ambient pads, washes, and drones. It has an auto feature, as well as effects, and a number of knobs for how the sustain attacks, sustains, repeats, and layers. There is also an Ego pedal with fewer functions.

I've had one of these on my wish list for months. Rick Beato also uses one all the time. For jamming/improvising purposes, they seem like they'd be more useful than a looper pedal.

This is still high up on my list of pedals to buy since your first video on this pedal :D Until then, I have to make do with TC's Flashback II, which can do a similar thing. Set to the 2290 mode with Feedback at 0, Level and Delay to taste, you can use the MASH Button to repeat a note (or phrase, as long as it is the lenght of the Delay-time). Kind of like a looper, but without the hassle of deleting loops to change notes. Just play, press and hold the footswitch and you're in business. Release, play new chord/note/phrase, press again and voila! The downside is that you still get an attack each time the chord/note/phrase starts again. On the one hand rubato is of the table, unless you choose to ignore the pulse, but on the other hand the pulse works as a metronome. You could also set the Feedback to a higher value to let the note fade out after releasing the footswitch.

I've got one of these, it's great and was the last one in the shop. My previous sustainer (Boss CS-3) could only sustain a note I was holding - useful for some things, but not really what I was after. (The Freeze [or at least my version] doesn't have a battery option if that's a deal breaker for people.) I also use my freeze to help tune my ring modulator...can't say that improves musicianship, but it sounds cool. A looper can provide a bit more dynamic context, and they're really fun too.

Ok, this is not going to be interesting to anyone, but... Back in the day (I am pushing on 60) I used Taurus pedals and various synth sustain pedals etc.. But now for 100+ units of exchange, wonderful. I've had mine since your first review and it still keeps delivering on bass, keys or guitar! From one Northern Lad (but Lancashire) to another, keep up the good work...

Have you checked out the Gamechanger Audio “Plus” pedal? It is a sustain pedal designed to be like a piano sustain pedal. Expensive. But I love mine. Can someone explain to me why this is better for practicing than using a loop pedal? I don't have any pedals myself, but I imagine that a loop pedal can do somewhat the same thing as the freezer, but in addition to that you can play chord sequences with it. Still very helpful video :D
@viktor4174
@viktor4174 4 жыл бұрын
A looper is good for a longer sequence, a few bars of chords. This pedal is kind of a one chord at a time deal. You just play and hold one note/chord and noodle a bit, then release the chord and on to the next one. With a looper you record a chord progression and it loops until you stop it.
@lorenzouva6615
@lorenzouva6615 4 жыл бұрын
I think probably a looper is a good choise for practise, especially if you're alone. With a bit of praticse you can simulate a drum, chord changes and practise over them
@citizenbxtr883
@citizenbxtr883 4 жыл бұрын
Yes but the point is that you can keep changing key on the fly. Once you have committed to a loop by definition you are stuck in a repeated circle. Looping is an amazing tool but momentary latching has a slightly different functionality ⭕👌
@lorenzouva6615
@lorenzouva6615 4 жыл бұрын
@@citizenbxtr883 i get your point, i's not the same, but it's another option and more affordable. And yes, you can't change the key on the fly, but you can simple make a chord sequence, for example the first four bars of autumn leaves, practice over it. I know it's a little bit more intricate, but it's just another valid option to the freeze pedal and for practice
